    You provide some really good information on airflow and ventilation. I subscribed and want to see everyone's ideas and solutions. I have five 100ft long high tunnels and I did some modification to all of my houses three years ago and eliminated several problems Our prevailing breezes and winds come out of the east and I built the tunnels on an east/west axis to catch these winds. Over two seasons I experimented and installed large swinging opening doors on my upper end walls at both ends. They are approximately 12ft x4ft. I prop them open in early June and leave them wide open until September. I typically open the roll up side about two feet and leave them that way all summer also. If we have cool weather or winds, I may roll them closed. If we start to see ANY condensation on the side walls I open them up ASAP. This simple modification allows the cold air entering through the lower roll up sides to heat up and rise, exiting the upper end walls taking out the heat and moisture. This rising air draws in more cooler air and the cycle continues. It is a simple effective chimney effect. This air flow removes excess condensation eliminating powdery mildew100% Because I now have better air flow and cooler temps, I removed the shade cloth. A 40% shade cloth is robbing your plants of 40% of the precious sunlight and maximum growth. It only took me eight years to figure that out. If you don't vent the rising hot air, it just stagnates in the upper part of the tunnel like a big old insulating blanket. The plants transpire even more moisture to cool off putting more moisture into the environment. I learned this lesson the hard was a few years back when I killed an entire high tunnel in about 4 hours of not paying attention. Proper and effective ventilation is the key to everything in high tunnels.

    What a great job you are doing. You speak very well from experience, your diction is very clear, no ummimng and arrring! Very informative. I have looked at probably 50 plus high tunnel channels to pick up hints and tips. But here you have rolled everything into one video! Amazing. Thankyou. Possibly I missed a lot on the others as basically, as I was searching for which to build that would suit my pocket, my yard, the neighbourhood and what I thought I'd use it for. Did I still need a green house...what to do with my straw gardens...how far down the paddock would I put it so it was not a chore to get to it and so on... Re the mould etc from lack of ventilation. I worked with a shipping container farming idea where they grew food in 7 days for cattle...breaking the old saying that it takes 3 kg of grain to grow one kg of meat-protein. We achieved a 1 for 1 ratio, which was unheard of. The cattle ate the 6 inch green shoots and also the root systems which still had a lot of the sprouted grain origins in it. We had trouble with mould on the 5th, 6th and 7th day and the green feed that grew was too pale to look right! So we installed windows into the last days run in the containers and that sorted out the colouring straight away. We installed ozone misters and that fixed the 5th day mould and gradually we reduced the growing period from 7 to 6 days and it all went well. The 40 ft containers were fitted out with 6 or 7 shelves, all on runners so each day as the 7th day trays were emptied, the new ones were started at the other end, pushing the other trays towards the end doors. Brilliant concept, could be transported for emergencies, fires, famines, droughts etc to grow food for cattle, humans etc. We grew tomatoes, lettuce but mainly animal fodders. One 40 foot container grew the equivalent of 60 acres of farmland, no tractors, irrigation etc etc. Seeds were mixed to the protein requirement of the animals, Milk cows, beef cattle, even girrafes and zebras in middle eastern zoos etc.

    We have a high tunnel through the NRCS EQIP program. There were a couple of restrictions...having to grow in the ground is the main one. And the restrictions are only for three years. Saved us thousands of dollars. After the three years are up, we may set up tables and raised beds. Thanks for the vid.

    Interesting about the restrictions, Danny - our local NRCS office placed NONE of those restrictions on us. They said we were free to add electricity and fans, and free to use raised beds. The ONLY two restrictions they placed on us were these: (1) we have to grow in it (ha), and it's not supposed to be a "tractor shed" for the first five years.

    Have an older (8 feet long) tiny greenhouse (I’m in town) that needs work this spring. Wanted to do last summer but Covid interfered. So spring it is. What mil plastic do you use in your green house.

    Danny, just watched your video on high tunnels. I was watching one of your older videos the other day and you were saying how great your greenhouse was now that you had purchased some new type of growing lights. Do you still use your smaller greenhouse that looked like it was attached to one of your buildings? I'm currently in the midst of building a 10X20' greenhouse on my five acres. Also, does your raised beds have a bottom or not? Thank you and God Bless.

      Yes we use our old one for starting seeds. We have the ground cover under our beds.

    Good evening Danny and Wanda, looking forward. Your link to the grow family does not seem to be working.

    You know I always wondered barns being warm with animal heat if a high tunnel connected to one, would help heat it.

      @@DeepSouthHomestead thank you. I had watched a video of a young lady who had one connected to her home and she put a window with a small fan and pulled the warm air into the house in the winter months.

    Can you explain why there are regulations on some of the high tunnels, never heard of this unless maybe they are subsidized by the government?

    • @DeepSouthHomestead
      @DeepSouthHomestead  Před 3 lety +3

      The NRCS ones are subsidized be the government. Ours is bought out right.

    Hi ya'll, do you remove the plastic on your high tunnel in the spring, i was watching gardening with Leon and he takes his plastic off in the spring and just uses the shade cloth. really considering getting a high tunnel.

    • @DeepSouthHomestead
      @DeepSouthHomestead  Před 3 lety +2

      We haven't removed ours yet. Ours went through 100 mph winds in the fall. This winter our sun is still very intense, so we have grown all winter in both greenhouses with the shade cloth.

    That is crazy. Did the high tunnel manufacturer try to dictate how you were growing in it?

    I dont understand why you chose to have the sides open only three feet from the bottom instead of maybe three feet from the middle then up from the sides?
