Back “in the day”, freestyle just meant “spit whatever with no storyline or point” (back when songs told a story). “Off tha top” meant “off the top of the dome-the idea that the person was making it up as they went. Back when napster was a thing, eminem had a freestyle where they was just throwing words at him, and theres definitely been other rappers who did that. Thats what i saw the difference as. Then when lil wayne got to doin his mixtapes that just say a bunch of nothin, “freestyle” and “off the top” meant the same thing. And here we are
