      A lot of people online don't understand how sometimes things fall into place nicely without being planned. So, they make up this myth that the stilted voice acting (in every case except Horgan as Mary/Maria and a few places with Burke as Angela) and the clunky script were somehow part of a master plan, when the truth is, they worked because they happened to mesh with a particular, and well-executed, dream-like atmosphere.

    • @SwordfighterRed
      @SwordfighterRed Před 5 lety +116

      Silent Hill 2's strength is never quite the obvious horrors. It's the more subtle things. It's the deep sense of despair and dread that permeates all throughout the game. And, for reasons that become obvious later, there's also an overpowering _sadness_ to it all.

    • @dangernoodle5831

      Yeah, and I honestly adore how unique it feels. It's the only horror game I've played that left me feeling so 'exhausted'. It's all in the subtlety and emotion. Seeing the mirror scene with Angela, for example, is so true to how people dealing with emotional trauma and depression is. All without being up in ones face about it.

    • @MegaZeta
      @MegaZeta Před 5 lety +41

      People take their experience of media so damn personally it's frustrating sometimes. It's why so many people can't handle even mild critique of what they enjoy, why they can't separate what they enjoy from enduring quality of a work, why they react with such knee-jerk rage to anything that suggests they should interrogate context or subtext. It's depressing because they're depriving themselves of so much that way.

      it's unsettling, disturbing, to me that's truly scary. Jump scares are not scary, they just spike your adrenaline, just like a thriller movie. I prefer stuff like this, Twin Peaks and the rest of Lynches work does the same thing exceptionally well but makes it even more scary I think because of the extreme contrast between innocent naive characters and the disturbing, weird dark things that happen on the side. It's like a mood that you can get in to, and stay for a long time.

    @BlinkLed Před 6 lety +160

    First off, hell yeah, and second off, getting this game to run on windows 10 is a nightmare. It's 5 CDS, needs a cracked exe to not require a CD in the drive to play, needs a directx fix because every game before directx 9 breaks now, requires mods to be able to play in windowed mode, requires mods to fix the lighting and shadows, requires mods to get the fog to work correctly, requires mods to run in widescreen (despite having widescreen settings in the menu?), and this is no longer a problem, but last time I set it up you needed to disable hardware acceleration or else audio just wouldn't work. Worst part is this is all just lack of backwards compatibility. If you have a Windows XP machine the game runs natively with no issues.

    The voice acting isn't bad so you don't need to use the "It's a PS2 game" excuse.
    SH2's cast were specifically picked to sound like real people and not like video game voice actors and a lot of their quirks and speech pattern are intentionally and extremely deliberate, can't say why without spoiling it but it makes sense by the end of the game.

    • @medli7725
      @medli7725 Před 6 lety +73

      Really? It has the opposite effect. They sound incredibly fake and uncanny. It seems like one of those bad horror B movies, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Dead Rising had the same shtick.

      @KristjanThomasHaaristo Před 6 lety +28

    • @TheDapperCat
      @TheDapperCat Před 6 lety +75

      There are issues with the script (ie the translation of the script into english, such as the infamous "How can you sit there and eat pizza!" line) for sure but I think people get the "fake and uncanny/badly acted" impression because people are so used to what video game voicing acting sounds like.
      Usually you either have the TV/Theatre style, more common nowadays where they mo-cap and record dialog at the same time, or the more anime/dub style which is someone in a recording booth, that's overly expressive to make up for animation, that's where you tend to hear grunts and noises when people are suppose to emote.
      Silent Hill 2 and 3/4 to some extent, cast actors who they felt were the characters, to the point their character models are based off the actors and they did all the mo-capping and weren't directed to "act" their dialog and scenes. I'll admit it's jarring at first, because you don't see a lot of voice acting done to this depth.
      James's voice for example, is suppose to convey he's emotionally distanced himself from his reality and feelings, Angela is suppose to convey her trauma (details would be spoilers) and how uncomfortable she is socially. She's also physically aged beyond her years and is infact 16 or under, which is why some of her dialog sounds childish.
      There's more details I could do into with James, Angela and the other characters but it would spoil everything, but after Vinny's done playing, it's highly recommended to look up the "Making of Silent Hill 2" which goes super deep into the symbolism, design of characters (like Angela's being aged) and all that stuff or heck, even play the game for yourself, a lot of the dialog and scenes make sense more once you have the full context of the story.
      If you want fake, hokey B horror voice acting, that's Resident Evil, or Silent Hill 1, if you compares those to this game you'll hear the different in that style of recording.
      Or look up the new voices in the Silent Hill HD collection where they dubbed it like anime and removed all the subtlety and subtext behind all the dialog and delivery, Twin Perfect did a 2 part video of how fucked the HD collection is but part 2 goes into the new voices specifically and how they are objectively worse.

    • @TheDapperCat
      @TheDapperCat Před 6 lety +25

      I can understand why people feel that way and the dialog isn't perfect my any means, some scenes are worse then others and the first exchange between James and Angela is super jarring without the full context of who those characters are.
      I'm fine with a lot of it being to taste, if you're someone who say, enjoys MGS voice acting the most (not to knock MGS I love those games) and that's the kind of acting you want, then yeah Silent Hill 2-3 voice acting sounds off by comparison, I guess the main thing to ask if to give it a chance and not assume it's bad for the start and see how you feel by the end of the game.
