The DJI Osmo Action 4 is the BEST action camera for livestreaming

- After a lengthy hiatus, I'm back on the bike and streaming again. In this video I cover my initial impressions of the DJI Osmo Action 4 for use as a livestreaming action camera. SPOILER ALERT: I think it's the best camera available at the moment. Combining UVC webcam output with electronic image stabilization has long been on my list for an IRL camera and I've got to give credit to DJI for making it happen. The livestreaming video quality coming out of this camera is the best I've seen. Additionally this camera is capable of being charged while using an external microphone over USB (credit to / @waynerecs for discovering this). Please leave any questions you have in the comments below and join my Discord for more info!

I cannot thank you enough for making this video. I'm about to do my own testing. The removal of the need for Elgato capture card (and all the power it consumes) is game changing (and frankly makes the Orange Pi Pro much less interesting other than for the ethernet ports). In fact, I'm about to upgrade my Inseego modem (Verizon) to M5, drop my other Verizon modem (also Inseego), and connect ATT m5 and Verizon M5 both over wifi dongles (so I can leverage available wifi when available and charge the modems if and when necessary) and that will drop the USB hub as well. If it works a single 30000mAh battery should be able to power the whole rig for 5+ hours reducing weight significantly. By the way, it appears the M5 does cover b13 (used by Verizon which the M1 does not) but I'll confirm. I've already boosted the whole thing with a weBoost Drive Reach Overland and been able to stream from state parks and mountain bike trails previously untouchable before. Adding the booster with a Maxoak 60000mAh to the 2 m5s (best modem on the American market) should really improve bike and backpacking possibilities, perhaps even overnight trips on single charges. Another cool thing about the Baesus 65W 30,000 mAh power banks is if you do the cabling correctly you can daisy chain them to vary the length of battery time needed for a particular trip without swapping out the battery. I tested this and noted that the middle battery will fill and then the charge will decrease from the end battery in such cases.
Love your channel name, especially since I'm a Tom as well. Just got the Action 4 and looking to learn more about livestreaming with it. Thanks for the video.
Hi Tom! 🤜🤛
Hey Tom. Lovely video, really! Quick question for you; for the Garmin quarter turn mount, what is the adapter that connects it to the DJI Osmo Action 4 itself? This is confusing me a bit.
Great question! It’s the magnetic mount that comes with the OA4. Similar to this 3rd party one: amzn.to/3RC1Icd
Thank you for the nice video. Is there any action cam you did good experiance with rtmp streaming? GoPro is also not very stable...
DJI Osmo action 4 and Pocket 3 are best for rtmp
@@PeloTom_ thank you. Will try that...
Love it,interesting dji!
So sick!
Hi there tom!
Is this the power bank you would still recommend for the OA4? I finally managed to get everything working, thank you so much for the help. Would be super lost without people like you & Emerald Audio Vision haha
Awesome! I’m using this one nowadays. it’s a bit smaller in size which fits better in a handlebar bag: www.amazon.com/dp/B07YPY31FL/ref=cm_sw_r_as_gl_api_gl_i_TWZH7CAR1N4M72QJ271W?linkCode=ml2&tag=revottv-20
Was wondering when you were going to add this to your setup!
Do you ever get a bug where after a long time of streaming the camera image gets weird like low bit color mode ? A lot of people have this bug in webcam mode, and need to disconnect and reconnect the camera to fix the issue
Yes 8-bit mode. DJI has yet to fix it 😕
@@PeloTom_ Thanks, that's a bummer
Man, you really uploaded this at the perfect time! I've been working on a similar build, do you mind if I ask what encoder setting you're using in Belabox? As far as I can tell, mine doesn't have a UVC preset, but I could be missing it!
Glad you found this video useful! I’m using the h265_v4l_mjpeg_1080p pipeline
@@PeloTom_ Huge thanks! Worked right away hahaha.
Found one downside of uvc mode for streaming, you can't change frame rate so it's always 30 and in my country there are a lot of lights which are flickering in this frequency... Don't know why dji don't let us choose 25.
And for some reason there are less settings available in uvc mode, so you can't choose both shutter speed diapason (like 1/200 - 1/8000) and iso diapason (like 100 - 6400) in pro mode at the same time. Which is pity cause it let's you adjust quality for low light much better (to keep eis as good as possible). Don't know why dji did it this way.
Yea I wish they let you choose your frame rate and shutter/iso 🤷♂️
Now you have 500 subs
You da man!
Hey tom , great video … your twitch stream has a Picture in Picture from two cameras , how are you doing that with belabox . Do you have some sort of video mixer on the bike , or can belabox composite the two cameras together somehow . I’d love to replicate your setup . Thanks for the videos Tom ! Inspirational!
Hey there! I’m actually using 2 belaboxes and doing pip on my home pc in OBS
@@PeloTom_ ah! that explains it. a very cool solution + fault tolerant.
Hey PeloTom! Enjoyed the stream yesterday. Have you tried recording on the DJI action 2 while streaming wireless via RTMP? Curious if that would improve the quality the same way it would for the DJI pocket 2
I have and unfortunately it does not improve the video quality 🙁
Thanks for that Tom. Do you know, whether I can send the Video in 4K to another device using Wifi? It's for a long timelapse which does not have to be streamed. Thanks!
At 4k you’re limited to recording only. Rtmp streaming and webcam mode are limited to 1080p
Thank you, appreciate your answer@@PeloTom_
what wind furries have for that DJI Osmo Action 4? that black anti wind in audio things
They are just black cotton balls you can buy at a craft store
Hi, this is really great, thanks for the video!
I wondered whether there is a way to automatically switch to UVC mode. Similar to how a "standard" webcam can be toggled on or off using a PC. Do you know of any way to do that? I started looking into USB sniffing, but it's a bit involved.
Thanks!
Thanks! Once you plug in the camera you just tap once to select webcam mode and you’re done.
@@PeloTom_ thanks, yes I know. I just wondered whether there is a programmatic way of doing that. I was thinking of using it in a streaming setup where I don't have physical access to the camera (or it's hard to reach). But, a very special problem I admit
Did you use the hotspot off your phone to live steam from your camera while it was on your bike ?
No I use multiple lte modems for streaming
@@PeloTom_ please make a video one day showing us the setup or how to steam off the DJI action 4 while riding 🙏🏾
Thanks for the detailed Video. Do you know if you can add a microphone with a USB Adapter while still in webcam mode?
I was thinking to try this but in reality when using Belabox and UVC webcam there is no need to connect external audio to the camera itself. Belabox accepts usb audio in which will be in sync with a UVC camera. In other words, I’m planning to run a Rode Wireless Go2 straight into Belabox when I need it while using webcam mode on the DJIOA4.
@@PeloTom_ yes right that's even better anyways. This must then be the best streaming solution for streaming sports and generally should also replace the X3000. Hdmi cables just always fail after some time of rough use.
So just for clarity on my end, the camera is connected via Bluetooth to your phone and the phone is the encoder streaming in RTMP? I'm struggling streaming with my gopro via rtmp and the app, it consistently disconnects. I'm looking for a different compact solution.
Just got to the end of the video. Lol ill leave the comment for algorithm food.
Which GoPro do you have? I am thinking of buying the Hero 12 and to use it for 10-15 minute livestreams…
@@joshuaa337 I'm using a 10. A 12 will probably work for you. I don't have the problem of the gopro disconnecting if I stream straight to youtube via the app. But if I try anything rtmp I run into a bunch of issues
Tom, hope all is good. I've got a question! How do you bond multiple modems? I currently run the M1 with an Ethernet cable and want to figure out how I can add a pocket wifi device in the future. Thank you,
Ben
Hey Ben good to hear from you! I use a device called Belabox. belabox.net/
@@PeloTom_ I am using Belabox as well. Is it as easy as taking a portable wifi modem and holding it next to it and it will automatically connect?
@@tourdechi not exactly. You need a usb Wi-Fi adapter plugged into Belabox (jetson nano) and then you have to configure the adapter to connect to your modem. Secondly for bonding you need to run a Belabox cloud server and configure it in the Belabox ui. It’s all pretty much explained on Belabox.net and this video here: czcams.com/video/YuH_B48nz1M/video.htmlsi=Czj5NEWbV4UxGsT-
I wonder if DJI going to add this webcam mode into its other cameras, would be great to have it in Action 3. And will it be in Pocket 3 when it's released.
And is it charging when connected to belabox via usb? Can jatson''s usb 3 port provide enough power and keep everything stable? And what about overheating while streaming?
Great question! My guess is they won’t backport UVC stab to older cameras since it would deincentivize people to upgrade. I imagine it wouldn’t be that hard to do however. Yes the camera is charging when connected to the usb 3 port on the nano, no issues overheating!
@@PeloTom_ Thank you for answers! I've bought Action 4 and have one more)) Does it provide sound via USB in UVC mode (when connected to belabox)? UPD found out, didnt choose usb sound in belabox =)) Awesome streaming camera!
@@EternalArrow yes it does!
Are you interested in exploring the same set up with the insta360 ace pro?
Nope! It doesn’t support webcam mode 👎👎
Please show how to set it up. thank you
Please see this video which has everything you need, just a different camera

Is the legato camlink still needed?
Nope! It can connect straight to Belabox via usb
Have you tested if the action 4 can live stream and record at the same time?
It can record 1080p30 in webcam and rtmp modes

Better than GoPro 12 Hero Black? Streaming over UVC usb or RTMP?
For sure better than GP12. I’m using it in UVC
Can it work without battery in UVC mode and not overheating?@@PeloTom_
And why is that? And do you mean overall or just for streaming.@@PeloTom_
@@legendfpv for streaming!
Can you stream to kick with this?
You sure can!
@@PeloTom_ Nice, would love to see a tutorial as I just bought my action 4!
Hello, can I do a live stream with the Osmo 4 with a power bank without a battery?
Hmm I’m not sure what you’re trying to accomplish here. You can connect a power bank via usb c and can have the battery in the camera at the same time.
Does overheat with the battery and charge at the same time ? Like GoPro
@@amossy_7958 nope! Works fine for me 👍👍
Hello Tom, thank you for the video!
I have a problem with the stream, it is lagging :) sometimes it gets stuck
Here is a short video about it: czcams.com/video/8fV3d-gzGpg/video.html
I use just the camera and my phone. What do you think could be the problem?
thank you! :)
Hi yes I’ve heard some people having stutter in webcam mode as well although I have not. I hope DJI releases a fix for it soon
I've got the same Problem
