The IC is a binary counter, which means it will step through all 8 possible combinations to turn on the three channels, thus giving you: Off, red, green, blue, yellow, magenta, cyan, white. The transistors act as drivers. The outputs of the IC cannot handle the load of the LEDs, so you use transistors as power switches. It's simple enough and teaches some analog and some digital electronics.
I guess if you just have left over led tape but keep in mind that led tape comes in different voltages - 5, 12, 24. It is best to get a proper controller for what you have tho

I want to put a big light on each side of my SUV roof rack. I have a disabled child so I can really only look for stuff from our vehicle, but we thought it would be epic to be flying through the forest at night with the world under a new light. any suggestions or directions would be awesome. I have military glow painted night panels from United nuclear on my vehicle to add a lot of this world glow for night safety as well.
Seems a little bright for what it is. Maybe it's just my own vision but I think testing it with a light meter would show they're not as bright as I perceive them to be. It's probably just me
