I remember farmhouse, ducks, and hen decor in the early 90's.
The 90's was MY decade. I turned 18 in 1992 and started my adult life. Several things you mentioned are still in my house.
We Gen X'ers ruled then and still do in 2024!

The dial up internet was the sound of the 90s for me. The Microsoft Encarta program served as an interactive encyclopedia and it was certainly popular in our household. Who could forget that tall tower of DVDs almost halfway to the ceiling next to the TV and speaker.
Yes, and electronic card catalogs in libraries.
Between that and the Friends/Seinfeld theme music...
Ha! My parent’s house was built in 1998, and it’s still pretty much a laundry list of most of these things; honey oak kitchen cabinets, patterned border in the bedroom, white kitchen appliances, recessed lighting, a big entertainment center, brass doorknobs and fixtures, etc. I guess I never thought about how little it’s been updated. But I suppose my home is largely stuck in the era around 2007-2010 too.
The nineties were great .. I was 19 years old in 1990. I was still very much into heavy metal music but I did like some of the grunge stuff coming out of Seattle. It was a good time to be a young adult..

I really felt like the world was getting better in 1990. The Iron Curtain had finally come down and and it seemed like there was a peaceful future ahead.

My old Rival crockpot is beige and brown. Hunter green saved me from the awful pinks/peaches/other awful pastels of the era. 😂😂

LOL! I forgot about sponge painted walls! I did the stenciling thing! I remember spending hours at my church stenciling teddy bears and balloons around the center of the wall in the nursery!
LOL! You dusted the fake plants by shaking them hard and then putting the leaves back on!
That is also something and sadly those parts really are gone away now or thinking now may not be all that good.

I remember using AOL vividly. We used it will into the early 2000s. My mom and I still use our AOL email addresses as our primary email.

Glamour Shots was a concept where (usually) women would go to a photographic studio and have their makeup done, sometimes accompanied with feather boas and costume jewelry and have photos taken. That was big in the 90s as were one hour photo studios where you could have your picture taken (alone or with friends) and in roughly an hour you’d receive your photos. These were different from traditional portrait studios in that you could dress casually and have fun with the poses.

My Vietnamese roommates back in the early 2000s had a bunch of Glamor Shots framed on their living room wall. They were NOT dressed casually lol.
I did a Glamour Shots with my mom because of the mother/daughter deal they had in my area.
Both of my sisters had photos done at Glamor Shots back then.

It was nothing like sitting our front stoop, talking on our cordless phone! We were one of the first on our block to get one so it was a joy to see the looks on people's faces as they walked by!😂
Those beige walls and oak cabinets look way better than all white and grey floors which is what everyone does nowadays
I can’t believe out of all the gaming consoles, you neglected to mention Sega Genesis. I mean, Sonic the Hedgehog was HUGE! I honestly don’t even remember Sega Saturn sold at any of the stores I shopped at. At least it didn’t have a playable display at any of the stores that marketed the other mentioned consoles.
The Sega Genesis was the underdog video game console. It secured 55% of the video games market at one point. The Sega Saturn was a flop outside of Japan 🇯🇵. It was released too early with a surprise launch which pissed off KB Toys so much that they refused to sell it ever since only stores like Toys R Us and Electronics Boutique, Babbage’s (later merged into GameStop). After about 3.5 years the Sega Saturn only sold about 9 million units. I do remember playing Daytona USA on Sega Saturn display kiosks at Toys R Us. All of my friends and I had either a PlayStation and/or Nintendo 64.
I'm a 90s kid who never made the transition to 3D. Still prefer playing 2D games to this day. I remember NES, SNES, and Sega Genesis being hugely popular well into the mid 90s. My first introduction to 3D was Doom on PC and its legion of imitators which I liked well enough, but it doesn't quite scratch the same nostalgic itch.
I turned 40 this year and I am starting to feel old, but at the same time I feel blessed to have grown up in the awesome decade that was the 90’s 😎

- Grunge bands (I live in Seattle)
- Grunge look (plaids, jeans, etc)

(I know some these things are outside the home activities, but I included them anyway)

Don't forget about "Southwestern" decor in the early 90s with pinks and turquoise everywhere! Haha! I think my mom knew that Gomer Pyle landlady that was describing the apartment to him with "...A nice new paint job of beige as well as new curtains, also beige...! Do you like beige? I like it because the dirt don't show...!"
Are you kidding? My mom still has that pinky/peach/turquoise southwestern stuff around. Her bathroom has textured walls and peach paint. 😂😂😂

I was a teenager in the 90s. I think you should do a part 2 and mention grunge, loud colored clothes, minivans, leggings, and ridiculous wind suits.
Lol windbreaker outfits..we called them swooshies because of the sound they made when you walked 😆
One winter in the 90s we had a pretty bad ice storm and you could just put on your swooshies and fly down a hill no sled needed 😂
Illegal raves, dropping acid and E's, going on joyrides and ramraids, paging your dealer from a payphone so the feds couldn't bust your man, bootleg tobacco, pirate VHS tapes and PS1 games, bustin payphones for Arcade change, evading the fuzz by going through the park and then down the BMX track where no-one could possibly catch you.

I remember the 90s as the decade when I probably drank the most. Also - Magic Eye posters
I forgot about Magic Eye posters. I remember my boyfriend and I standing outside a mall store that had them in the window trying desperately to see the Star Trek USS Enterprise that was floating in the center of the stars. I wish I would have bought that thing.

@@katie7748 You had kinda cross your eyes as you stared into the picture. I couldn't do it at first but once I figured it out it was easy to do. After awhile though your eyes would start to strain which is probably why they're no longer popular.
Boy, you really captured this era! And I know from following you that you are a 70s and 80s child and you did the 90s justice. The sentimentality and flairs of that period. I would hug you if I knew you!
Awesome video about my favorite decade ever. My only nitpick would be not mentioning anything about the Sega Genesis which alongside the Super Nintendo, was a huge part of my childhood during the early to mid 90s.
I loved my Super Nintendo....I played Super Mario 2 and 3 almost everyday after school.
I loved the Genesis and Sonic. That was a highlight of going to my uncle's house. I think he still has his that he got in like 90 or 91.

Cordless phones actually came out in the 80's. My mom worked at the AT&T store and they sold like gangbusters!!! Keep up the great vids!!!
Those beige computers... and beige everything ...argh!!! We were all so happy when those first colored iMacs came out in the late 90s! Finally some color and style in our lives once again! 😂
Even Apple had a few beige systems. My first computer, a TI 99 4A. I also had colored Macs. Great deal!
@@jackilynpyzocha662 Yeah! I learned on an Apple IIe at school and a few years later we had an Apple IIGS at home. Both of those were beige in color. It was definitely a trend of the time haha.
Yeah then after the g3 computers went back to being one color, black. Sometimes white.

Our house in the 80's was full of gaudy, pastel colors, but when we moved in the 90's mom painted everything beige, and I'd gotten so used to the colors that I always hated it. At least we kept all of our wood furniture; I still have the VHS case that my grandpa made himself.
You have to keep that stuff. When my parents moved to PA I took their wooden radiator covers they had made.
I like the wooden furniture. We had faux wood panels in house and aside from ripping up the shag carpet the wood panel stayed...
But I did like the red and blue carpet. I called it the Red room in the Blue room. When I got two big for the Red room they moved me to the Blue room
If I remember correctly and I think I do I asked for it to remain. You know what you just unlock a semi core memory!!!!
If I remember correctly my mother asked me while I was going to sleep while she was putting me to sleep if I wanted to change the paneling and like they were doing in their room to be like a white plaster to match their white popcorn ceiling and said no.
I think she tried to convince me and I just said no I like looking at the pictures in the woods panel.
Whereas my dad would not have listened to me my mom actually respected my wishes and the wood panel remained. 😊

I absolutely love the '90s but I hate to say it that was the beginning of where we're at right now with this anti-American tear down all of our traditional holidays type thing that was when it started in the mid to late '90s when you started having people complaining about this and that
Speaking of the cordless phone, I'd add to that list: Caller ID boxes. If you didn't have one in the 90s, you were considered old timey, and probably still had a rotary dial wall phone.
We did not have caller ID when I was a teen in the 90's. I would always use *69.

Paying for the service and renting or buying the boxes wasnt cheap and was seen as an unnecessary expense for most people.. Eventually It did start to become cheaper or even included in the service for free and phones finally had it as an included feature (im not sure when that happened, definitely not till late 90s)
I totally forgot about Builder's Square! My 90s house definitely had all blonde wood and white appliances. My mom was in her "southwest" phase so the living room was shades of teal, mauve, and other dusty colors, with metallic accents (and wolves instead of angels). My grandmother was angels 😅 But I still have my entertainment center from that time! I never got into 650 inch tvs or whatever, and like to store stuff, so it works!
I think everyone had an aunt who collected angels. I still give mine an ornament or figurine every Christmas.
I remember how the first flat screens came out in the 1990s, and they were very expensive. A 13 inch Sony ran about $1000, and today you can buy several flat screen televisions(minus the bulky weight) for much less. Thank you for your video presentation. Take care.
I have seen 45' smart flat screens in Target for $200-$300.
Really can deal a hernia carrying those and the stereo can be really ear splitting though for the time it was awesome sadly they just went away now and really some of those lifestyles really can have bad consequences.

I was born in 1978 and I was a teen in the later part of the 90's. I remember all of these items.
My only conmplaint - or suggestion is that there was an absolutely HUGE neo-Victorian trend all over the country - yes even California, especially San Francisco. New houses looked old, neo-Victorian furniture, art work, flower pictures and arrangements everywhere!! Every shred of fabric had flowers. Hunter green was ubiquitous and elegant. Houses became very fancy as the 90's economy started to boom all the way until 2008. It was all quite beautiful.
My Mom had a whole country theme going on in our house throughout the nineties. We had country/folksy wooden shelves and benches with cutout heart shapes in them, dishes and canister sets with apples on them, A wooden dry sink with a big giant water pitcher that sat in a big basin bowl, and hunter green and burgundy curtains and drapes

Before Cottagecore was just cottage. We had topiary trees, folk art and a nice collection of jugs with a matching set of cows painted on them. Decorative only of course. Ah the early 90’s. You unlocked the gel candle core memory for me, wow thanks 😂
I work at a Goodwill and I absolutely DESPISE those fake plants! They’re always covered in dust and grease from being on top of the cabinets!😂😂

I bet certain items like plastic indoor plants 🌱 are a nightmare for shops like Goodwill. What else is troublesome?
I grew up in New Zealand and remember many different interior design styles in the 90s. Definitely recall the sponge-ing and stencil, but also remember bold single-colour paint jobs, and that oh-so-necessary "feature wall" that was a pointedly different colour from the other walls in the room.
Much Baroque and Tuscan influence, dried flowers, draped fabric, golds, deep reds, warm colours, lavender flowers, "deconstructed decadence", French rustic touches, and hardwood floors. I aspired to the more minimalist trend of off-white plasterboard, large tiled atriums, skylights, mezzanine floors, generous patios, and the newly-birthed realtor selling point: "indoor-outdoor flow".
I was also fond of the style-blending and grunge-tingled aesthetic in graphic design, throwing mixed fonts and patterns at each other.
Much fun.
It's so funny that a lot of these things I didn't necessarily associate with the decade but totally were. As always, many great memories were unlocked!
Same here! I felt like my mom was the authority on decorating and making our house look so nice. Now I realize that it was the same look that everybody else had at the time and, even though I don't decorate that way, I never even noticed that the style left
Thanks for the memories, Rhetty! I remember having to mash the button on the cordless phone to make it alarm so we could find it. That was always a production, parents yelling and trying to hear over them to find the phone was a hassle. LoL! Kids today just have to call the missing phone.

I got my first CD player in 91, so I always associate the 90s with collecting CDs. I know they made it on the market in the 80s, but I waited until the players were more affordable.
I did the same. I have all of those CDs stored away, I spent hours burning them to a hard drive before I stored them.

I was a 90's kid so I remember alot of these. I remember my mom sponge painted her classroom ( she was a kindergarten teacher in the 90's), my mom and grandma had those fake greenery all over their houses. My parents a few years ago repainted their cabinets from oak colors, our trim and tables were the same color. I had a huge TV stand like the one you showed with built in rack underneath that had individual VHS tapes slots built in. My parents still have our big speakers. I had a pair of roller blades but my sister always preferred her roller skates. My parents house still has those bar hanging lights above their fireplace. I got a Playstation in 1999 when I was 8 years old. It blew my mind that I got one because they were very expensive for my family. I had forgot about gel candles my mom had a few.
I was a kid, but my parents bought their first home in the 90s. That Oak was everywhere. The kitchen walls were apricot. The sofa set, which they still have, was this southwest pattern in dusty peach, sage, and beige.
Oh my... Your parents' sofa set reads like what my mom has. Our old house was renovated in the early 1960s: Our walls are panelled throughout the house in sunset maple and the kitchen cabinetry matches them.
I remember it all, we still have our VHS player and many tapes. We also still have our light oak entertainment center but the newer tv's won't fit, they are too big. Another video that I found very entertaining. Thanks again, Rhett for the blast from the past!

I am a 1980's teenager and I still have a large, LOUD, and impressive audio rig or as some call it "stereo." The difference is that now my rig has hundreds of Watts of power and it is mostly digital. The Bluetooth speakers and TV soundbars can't even touch a REAL home sound system with REAL power and just plain guts.
Dial-up modems... It took an hour or more to download one song, and that was only if something didn't break your connection lol
I used to pick up cordless phones on the high UHF bands of my old TV.
1:25 FWIW, I've always thought (and still do), think that cargo pants are the bees knees.

I remember getting my huge Kenwood stereo system for Christmas in the mid 90s with the glass window on the front and the big free standing speakers. The bass was amazing.

Seeing a video presented as a short history documentary about stuff I had in my own home growing up is making me feel ancient, and the fact that it showed up in my suggestions the day I realised I officially have noticeable grey in my beard has me feeling some sort of way. Good Lord, watching this brings back so many memories. I have a fondness for the 80's, but I was pretty young then. The 90's really is my decade and I miss it so much. We had just about everything you cited in this video in our house. In fact, the old house still has that freestanding ceiling lamp in it. It's the exact style shown in this video except it was an off-white rather than black. The only thing we didn't have was the sponge painting on the walls, but I do remember seeing it in other houses. Great video!

I lived in apartments in the 90s. Most of the furniture came from Ikea, because it was easy to take apart to move.
I think 90s was a complete blank for me. A lot of firsts but painting my first apt using textured paint was extremely memorable. Did I say that before painting I had to remove the horrible PINK wallpaper the previous owners put up!!?? Nightmare! Was a time I'd rather skip (thx Rhetty) 😂 Can anyone answer this question? Who invented artificial plants? 😃 I get the reason why, they could never look real so what's the point? The question is, YAY or YUCK? I think its definitely YUCK! I really can't say there was ever a bad time in my life. I finally listened to my parents, buckled down and focused on school! I'm certainly grateful for them. How many times can one parent say, " I told you so" or " You'll thank us one day" Thanks Rhetty!! Your the best!🙏

Definitely right about the furniture and appliance lasting decades! I was born in 90 and have had the same dresser my entire life. I finally gave it to my son 2 years ago (and my dad gave me his from back then lol) It’s as sturdy and works as well as now as it did back then! My night stand has been in my family since then as well.
I agree with the computer desks, too!
Laserdisc and the Laserdisc player, that technology was ahead of its time and very revolutionary into the next generation of movies.
