Roundabouts are an intelligent concept that prevent a traffic build up, not seen in many countries. For someone who recently converted an overseas license to a WA license, the journey was tough and these videos from Steve were very helpful....the bottom line is , Australian rules and standards leave a lot to the prudent judgement of drivers and there therefore seems to be a point at which the hard and fast rule ceases to apply.....like in this video, the assessor's expectation would vary according to whether one was already at the dotted line or a car length away from it vs the relative position of the vehicle to the right...This is also evident from how 2 different, well experienced driving trainers sometimes seem to have different/conflicting opinions on the same issue....

I agree, roundaboutsa are maintanance free intersections operating even when the power is out. Thanks for sharing your thougts. I wish we are allowed to have dash cams recording during assessments, so we could challenge any unreasonable decisions

You have to give way to vehicles already in the roundabout. That’s it. If a vehicle comes from the right that has not yet entered the roundabout then i can go. Give way to the right does not apply at roundabout it’s about vehicles already in the roundabout. That’s what the road rules say. Why don’t assessors follow what the road rules say?
    Roundabouts
When entering a roundabout, always give way to any vehicles already in the roundabout. Obey the directional arrows on the road.

When you say give way to any vehicle already in the roundabout, does that mean you treat it like you would a give way sign at an intersection i.e. if there is a car coming but it is at a far enough distance then you can proceed if safe to do so? Or does it mean you must wait and let any car pass that has entered the roundabout and is showing intention to turn past your entrance regardless of the timings. This video suggests the latter.
In my area there are only very small roundabouts so I always yield to any car turning right who has already entered the roundabout. But there are larger roundabouts out there, even single lane ones, that have quite a large diameter meaning you could definitely safely proceed if a car turning right from the opposite direction has already entered just before you. But is that what you're supposed to do?

You have forgotten Australia’s biggest traffic problem. Aussies don’t know how to use a round-about. There are two rules how to use a round-about. The legal rule and the popular rule. The legal rule is to slow down approaching a round-about and give right of way to the cars already in the round-about or
One very _I_M_P_O_R_T_A_N_T__rule is not observed in Australia! A car coming from the left has the right of way if arriving at the round about first or waiting. Here is your Popular Aussi rule: race into the round-about. Disregard everybody except people entering from the right. (as it it was a normal crossing). People coming from the left who legally have the right to enter round-about, if they arrive at the round-about are waiting patiently. These people generally don’t know that they have the right of way!!!!

I drive in Sydney traffic all the time, sometimes I’m already at the roundabout ready to enter.
Sometime a gap appears on the cars coming directly from the right giving me an opportunity to “enter” the roundabout by a car length
This will require the second car from the right to slow down but they often actually accelerate because they think “right goes first”
Isn’t that rule voided because I entered the roundabout?
I thought whoever enters the roundabout goes first ?
    The second car will be

Not a give way to the right.
Instead, you give way to any traffic on the roundabout that you might impede by entering. Includes oncoming traffic entering the roundabout signalling a right turn.

up here in Qld the cars on the right way will not allow the car on the left go front you even if they are no way near the inter section you can sit at a around about for 5 to 10 mins they have no idea up here so round about here are useless and they all give way to the right like they are on a give way

The sign says 'give way to traffic on roundabout'. So first in, best dressed, giving way to what's coming on your right, if needed. It's not a standard cross road.

This man is wrong. Has he actually read the state LEGISLATION re roundabout usage?....few people have, that's why they end up in court still believing their own misconceptions... I see this every week day in court. Read the legislation people, stop being ignorant. Drive in response to driving conditions; never under-estimate the stupidity and ignorance of road users.
