  • Struggling is my middle name, but we all know that by now! 😝
    This idea of turning a slab of cedar into a loft ladder came to my head, and even though it didn't quite come to fruition the way I had hoped (with this particular live edge cedar), I know the concept will work and I hope it inspires you to maybe do something similar! There was an itch I needed to scratch, so executing this material into a loft ladder just had to happen. Will it match the rest of the cabin? Dunno, but I kinda didn't care at that point.
    One thing I always need to remember is that working with live edge, rough-sawn material (without fancy tools) is always harder than just going to the lumber store and buying dimensional lumber to build something. This way lends for a very unique and rustic look, which is amazing, but it always ends up being harder.
    But I legit think this turned out SOOOO cool; better than I thought it would, and I'm happy I took the chance on it and struggled my way through to see what my brain told me would look neat. 😬
    Now the tung oil - I normally don't like too much finish on my wood projects - I really like things to stay calm and natural. But I also know that this needed something to seal it, and secure it, so I tried a new product. I always like to try new ways of doing things/finishing things, and I do like the outcome on this. This particular cedar is super aged and 'handsome' - the finish brought out the nice rich browns in the wood, not so much the orange and yellows of other woods. yay!
    No surprise, it all took me just a bit longer than I thought it would, which meant that this video is only a ladder build and not a delivery and install day too, so I will see you next week for that video.
    Stay tuned until the very end - for all the pet lovers out there, your heart will melt 💝
    Thanks so much for watching, and see you in the next one!
    Michelle 💕💕💕💕

    The ladder looks good and should certainly be strong enough, never really given the live edge thing much thought but it works on the ladder. Looking forward to the ladders trip to the Cabin. 👍

    I love your new live edge ladder. It looks great, but I think if it were mine, I would do a partial fill of black epoxy, just enough to cover the structural screw that is a very unnatural color and look. Black epoxy would just look like a dark shadow. You are a DIY genius.

      I agree! I love the look of your ladder. The live edge will make it fit in great at the cabin. I think it will be plenty strong enough for your use. But I think I would go one more step and fill the split rungs with black epoxy. If you don’t I think in time they will be an issue. Love it!❤❤❤

    Animals can certainly help each other overcome their passed downs in life. We had a similar situation, and it can be heartbreaking. But, when a breakthrough comes, it becomes heartwarming. I love the Cedar live edge ladder. 🎉

  • @bobflores
    @bobflores Před 7 měsíci +6

    Those cedars look like they were fire killed. A fire may have blown thru your property 100+ years ago. Every other tree species that died then rotted away after the fire. Cedars just take forever to rot.
    You could resaw the original rungs thinner and then carved a "live edge" to match the side rails instead of using the other slab with sketchy big checks. If this ladder doesn't work out you can build a new one.
    Sometimes when we make do with what we have we have to make compromises. It is especially important to NOT make compromises that impact structural integrity on something that needs to be structurally sound. Thanks for the episode and stay safe.

  • @carbonitetorch4563
    @carbonitetorch4563 Před 7 měsíci +4

    i love your ladder! Also, you can get epoxy with a 'mixer tip'. that would allow you to get it down in the crack without getting it all over that beautiful live edge. I'm definitely jealous of all that gorgeous material you have on your property.

    Interesting ladder design and build. Looking forward to seeing what you build with the inner slab chunks; such pretty wood. Well Michy, as a good friend once told me "Creative minds are seldom tidy!" yet you sure get wonderful and unique end products. The live edge ladder is one of a kind like you. Isn't it funny how a hound like your Clyde with those big ol' ear flaps can be stone deaf when their mind is focused on something else like food morsels or a good scent.

    I think your choices were spot on. Perfectly imperfect, just like I like 'em!!. As for tung oil, it has become my favorite finish. I used to use minwax poly, but even the satin was just too much like a plastic finish for my little bandsaw boxes that I made for a while. My brother, who was an art teacher but who can restore just about anything kept telling me about tung oil and I finally tried it. Bingo! exactly what I was looking for. Makes the grain pop and adds some protection but does not look like plastic. Looks more like the real wood. Beautiful ladder but then of course, it's a Michy original!! What else did we expect! Love the cedar too. And the dogs do indeed seem very happy. ❤❤

    Yes.... The sander and the planer can, if done correctly, can increase the smoothyossity. Increasing the smoothyossity will, for sure, reduce the roughcuttyness. You need a shop and a mask so you aren't breathing all the smoothyossity dust. It is my opinion that you have imbued that slab of Cedar with more that adequate ladderation. It will server you well in your cliff dwelling that is very well endowed with beautifimus rustification. I'm so happy for Lenny. What a great thing you have done by giving him a whole new life. And still I'm smiling.

    That ladder looks great with all of the live edges. I had thought that you might just cut holes in the slab to make it look like a ladder but that way you didn't have to attach rungs maybe making it stronger but I could be wrong about that thought. The ladder you have built is beautiful and will look wonderful in the cabin. You make me smile at how much energy you put into your projects but the end results is by far the most satisfying. It takes along time to build things to satisfying perfection and you definitely give it your all. Keep up the great video's. ❤

    Someone may have mentioned this, but I haven't read all comments. The trees that are struck by lightning will look burned and die, most of the time it travels on the outside of the tree and explodes the bark off them. My Pine trees get the same look and bark will be scattered 100 feet from the tree base. On the subject for finishes, experiment with the Toung Oil: mixture of 1part Toung oil+ 1 part Shellac + 1 part Mineral Oil. You can change the mineral oil amount for your preference. It leaves a surface resistant to stains. Multiple coats can be applied for more durability. Light fine sanding between coats will improve the luster. As always, Love your videos.

    Love the live edged ladder. Definitely use clear or black epoxy in the cracked rung. Fill it about 6mm over the structural screw so you can still enjoy the look of the crack. Cheers.

    Мишель, мы тебя так любим а ты себя не бережош , пользуйся респиратором , сама увидишь что и чувствовать себя будешь лучше и не так уставать от работы . Вот горстку стружки собрала только , а могла ДВЕ собрать ! Вторая горстка у тебя в лёгких осела 😌😏

    I find a good belt sander with some gritty grit paper does a great job on removing wood and making it smoothie smooth.

    Great looking ladder! Tongue oil is used a lot down here in Texas especially on Cedar. You can give it one coat a year or you can give it 10 coats and really build up the finish. Great job as always.! You are hired! 👍👍👍😎🇨🇱

    The ladder color turned out very nice !!! Cedar was a great choice. Keep in mind,,you’re out on that cliff by yourself a lot. Those screws that didn’t make contact would always be on my mind. I hope you end up fixing that problem. I just had to put my last Boston Terrier down. Sister was such a great companion. It rips my heart into every time I lose a furry friend. Take care and be safe out there.

    I think you did a great job. Common mistake not measuring each cut on steps. Because of the small difference in the cut loss. Tung oil was always a great product when I was growing up. Used a lot over and over on exposed woods. Also Lenny, so good to see him come around and be a dog again. Great job with projects and the animals.

    i mention this because ladder rungs seem very important: someone in the trades told me that you should not have weight bearing screws go into the end grain of wood - screws/nails are best perpendicular to the grain so they grab into each layer and compress it, gives way more shear strength and grip of the fastener into the wood. there are tricks furniture/cabinetry makers and framers use to keep to this rule, using supports underneath that align the grain best is one way. i am sure other tradesmen here can give more info, if not i think quick google/youtube searches will give ideas.

      One thing I could have done was some pocket hole screws from underneath in addition to what I did do. I’ll see how it goes …
