    Here's another tip. If you have a capsule, like the one in the video, it floats in liquid, so tip your head down and it will be closer to he back of your mouth and easier to swallow. It's the opposite for tablets (often coated), they sink in liquid, so tip your head up and they will sink and be closer to back of your mouth again making it easier to swallow. Hope this helps!

    • @blaireshoe8738
      @blaireshoe8738 Před 10 měsíci +19

      Yeahhh, "try harder" was pretty much the only advice I got too. I stumbled onto the carbonation thing by accident, and really struggle to take my meds without it. Luckily my meds are small enough that if I *have* to I can power through with just water, but it's so horrible, every single time, and the carbonation like she said really cuts that down to only about 5%. This coming from a person who thinks pain killer tablets are way too big and buys liquid versions when possible >_>

      Idk if this could be helpful in any way, but when i had to teach my little brother to swallow pills (he accidentally got prescribed pills instead of syrup), i did that:
      I took a grape (obviously anything similar will work too), cut it in many pieces, until the pieces were small enough for him to be able to swallow without chewing or being too scared. And because grapes are squishy, slippery, and also a familiar food, they are less scary to just swallow. When he was comfortable with the very tiny pieces of grape, i would increase the size of the grape pieces gradually (and i dont remember, but probably at some point ive introduced water to the equation). In terms of water, its probably a good idea to practice swallowing small grape pieces with water even when its not necessary, just to be familiar and comfortable with the motion (as someone who has taken a lot of pills in their life, im still sometimes scared to drink the water incorrectly).
      When he got to the point where he was able to swallow (with water) grape pieces that were big enough, i would cut the pill into a couple of pieces and put the pill pieces into the grape pieces, and after a while, i removed the grapes completely (but the size of the pill pieces was left the same), and then went from 1/4 pill, to 1/3, to 1/2, untill he was able to swallow the whole pill.

      Grapefruit is the worst but OJ, lime juice etc also have impact. Its the pH of the grapefruit that is the issue when it goes into the stomach with the medication, it alters the rate the medication releases into the body. Typically it causes too much to enter your blood stream too quickly.

    • @PinkGumballs
      @PinkGumballs Před 11 měsíci +71

      @sophiechauvin4025 I believe the point Jessica was trying to make is that some oral medications are enteric coated, meaning they arent supposed to begin breaking down until they are past the point of the stomach. Carbonation may cause these medications to begin breaking down too early, changing the way in which the body absorbs the medication.

    • @elerileigh7926
      @elerileigh7926 Před 10 měsíci +10

      Well no not quite. Carbonation isn’t the issue, carbonation is CO2 gas disolves into the liquid medium, co2 is very stable and doesn’t really react to other things. Meaning it doesn’t break anything down. However soda’s have other ingredients typically like citrus acids and the like. Acids do break down capsules, if you need a capsule to be taken and need a soda I suggest a carbonated water or mix your own soda’s with a soda stream and flavor squirties at home!

    To be a little more specific, i recommend placing it along the center line of the tongue (between the two muscles) and slide it as far back as you comfortably can without feeling the urge to gag. If its a long capsule like that, make sure you put it lengthways with the tongue so you feel it less.
    I recommend NOT using a straw if thats something you are comfortably able to do. I find that the slow trickle of fluids from the straw not only will give the pill more time to potentially slip out of place, but will begin to loosen the outer coating, which sometimes tastes nasty.
    If you prefer to use a straw, drink first then put in the pill second. If you can swig the drink, do it in the opposite order.

      Pharmacist here. If you put the liquid in your mouth first and then drop in the pill(s), you won't have to work nearly so hard taking your medication. Your body's natural instinct to swallow the liquid will take over any difficulty in swallowing the pill(s) that's in there with it. Works 100% of the time. Seriously.

      There are liquid versions of some meds but these may be prohibitively expensive. A lot of tablets can be crushed and mixed with drinks or yogurt. Have a chat with your pharmacist and they will be able to advise on the suitability of your meds for this (source-I work with pharmacists every day and we often get this question for kids,older people or people with sensory issues).

    I'm so glad I'm not the only one who needs soda when taking these! I have 14 pills a day that I have to take and I got berated by some people when I asked if I could have a soda rather than just water.
    It was just so hard taking those pills since it would get stuck at the back of my throat because of that sticky outer layer when it got wet. And I would always end up gagging on it. It hurt so much.
    At least now it hurts a little less- and I always just have soda with me lol.
