she didn't try to pronounce them phonetically, they were writen on the card only phonetically, without the persons real spelling of their name. they set that lady up for failure dawg
Yeah seems like they really wanted to avoid false pronounciation with the phonetic writing but because this woman clearly didn't know how to read it (which is not really her fault), they made it worse than it ever could have been. Why they wouldn't write it in both versions is beyond me, you rarely see phonetic writing just by itself. But honestly she also set herself up for failure by acting like she could read that and making a fool out of herself.
Maybe the English teacher should have been in charge of reading names then lol. I'm very curious as to the phonetic spelling of Thomas.
@Altmetalpunk TAH-MUHS, or TAW-MUHS. not easy to parse when you expect it to be the persons real name. Now, it just looks like a foreign name that could be mispronounced. that was a nightmare for her and it really wasn't her fault

@@anarchium_wellsquest /ˈtɒməs/ in IPA actually, which is designed around the actual phonemes across languages, which if they used IPA for whatever dumb reason (it's not really useful unless you actually study phonemes a bit and know how to read them) that could be why she had trouble with it. Or she was doing a bit.

Apparently the graduate names were written ONLY phonetically and the woman was not informed that this would be the case. If so, then I definitely get why she had trouble. Phonetic spellings can be difficult to understand if you don’t have the actual names for reference.
