  • Studio secrets from the Hot Chip member and producer.
London producer Joe Goddard has quite the career under his belt. A founding member of Hot Chip - who he’s been performing with for 18 years - Goddard has made six studio albums with the band, released two solo albums, DJs regularly and even runs his own record label, Greco-Roman.
But how does the man that helped to write countless Hot Chip hits and produced the 2011 classic ‘Gabriel’ make a track? We visited his production space in east London to get an insight into his creative process, where he gave us a step-by-step guide to making music with vintage synths, classic rack effects, Just Blaze drum samples and Cubase. Listen to the finished track below.

Cubase actually runs better on Windows than it does on Mac... Go figure. I don't think Steinberg do that intentionally as they have many users on Mac, like Hans Zimmer etc. Junkie XL uses it on a PC as well.

''I'm gonna use one of these synths here in the room. It is a 'somewhat classic' 70s keyboard.'' This dude owns a freaking CS-80 and used it also as his table for spraypaint and a cappuccino cup. Shiiiiiiit.. Nobody is commenting on that?

I thought the sane thing. I know Hot Chip had a couple of hits in the 00s, but how does he afford all of this? His studio has some of the most expensive and rare synths in the world - w MIDI retrofits no less! A large Moog Modular, what looks like a memorymoog or ploymoog, a roland system 100, OB Xa, ARP 2600, and of course the modified CS 80 - plpus a tube tech compressor and loads of vintage outboard gear - I watch loads of these in the studio videos and this has the most high end gear I've seen in a long time. All thats missing is a Yamaha GX 1!

@@ricjenner1120 If music is not only your profession, but also your (*ONLY*) hobby - you'd be surprised how quickly you can amass a size-able collection. I've heard of some of these producers actually not owning a car at all, instead opting to invest more in their home studio; the thought being hey- it's my job after all isn't it? And home studio means no commute. Plus if you spend 30+ years looking for good deals...well..you eventually find a lot of them! My point being: he obviously didn't pay the current going rates for these legendary studio staples. Often you hear of some of these old heads getting gifted synths, or buying and repairing broken ones back in the day, only to come to find out they had a rare gem years later. It's usually a bit mix of all of this from what I can tell. At least from the 100+ "In the studio's" I've watched LOL. Never too late to start your own collection though and get that GAS goin' mmmmmm ;D
