Probably not a popular choice amongst admirers of Walker's work but for me, "Tilt" is his greatest album.

I have listened to SDSS1416+13B (Zercon, A Flagpole Sitter) on repeat for like two months. It was the only thing I could listen to which made my boyfriend crazy. He was the one going mad while I was singing along to "DID YOU EVERY THROW YOUR MOTHER'S OWN FOOD BACK AT HER!". I would even go to sleep listening to it, it's a song that is fascinating, beautiful, hysterical, sad, and existential. If I was a stripper, this would be the song I'd perform a private dance to.

So cool to see a Scott Walker tier list, you go over all the albums’ positives and negatives very well (Scott 3 is also my favorite of his solo albums). I got into him through David Bowie’s cover of Nite Flights and have been obsessed with his output (barring his wilderness years) ever since. I still think those first 4 songs on Nite Flights are truly the best thing he ever did, they were his biggest jump in quality from what came before, and established the perfect foundation for all his later masterpieces.

    • @MikeGodetteMusic
      @MikeGodetteMusic  Před 2 lety +2

Thanks so much for listening! Nite Flights is groundbreaking for sure, especially considering what came before it. I especially love the track Nite Flights, reminds me of something that could’ve been on Climate of Hunter. If you like The Beach Boys and are interested, I did a tier list of them as well. The link is in the description

Good list! Mine would go, from best to worst:
    1. Scott 3
    2. Scott 4
    3. Scott
    4. Scott 2
    5. Tilt
    6. Til The Band Comes In
    7. Climate Of Hunter
    8. The Drift
    9. Scott Sings Songs From His TV Series
    10. Bish Bosch
    11. The Moviegoer
    12. Stretch
    13. We Had It All
    14. Any Day Now
I like them all but the top 10 I love. Also would put his songs from the Nite Flights album right up there.

Truly tastefully done, my good man.
I’d been waiting for someone to tackle Scott, to the point where I almost did it myself, and my ranking would be very similar to yours. Nooo way one can keep The Trilogy off of S rank across the board. (Soused at a high A)
Thank you for the excellent video!
Far more in-depth on a per-song basis than most album ranking videos, high enthusiasm and energy, very enjoyable and made me want to listen to Scott rn. (i.e. Climate Of Hunter)

I like any day now, I don't know why they hate this album so much, I don't care about the opinion of the crowd that repeats and repeats contempt, I like this covers album, hearing Scott's voice in someone else's songs is fascinating, my favorite tracks They are Do I Love You, If, If Ships Were Made To Sail and Ain't No Sunshine, Ain't No Sunshine is the most beautiful version I've heard, it's the song with which I met Scott Walker, I love it

P.S - Are you gonna make more '5 [Composer] chord voicings on guitar' videos? - they're the best

Learned of Scott Walker hearing an NPR reflection of his passing 3+ yrs ago. I deep-dived and became a devotee. I peripherally knew "The Sun Ain't Gonna' Shine Anymore" as a teen in the late'60s - I assumed it was done by the Righteous Brothers! I agree with your overview/assessment for the most part, Scott 3 being at the top. A true artist in every sense of the word. Scott Walker is unique in the annuals of (all) music.

Really enjoyed this appraisal. Been a huge fan since early ‘80s. Searched the record shops and boot sales for the long-deleted albums and I bought Climate on the day it was released. Your placings very much echo my own. Scott 3 is the greatest though 30 Century Man is the odd man out. Anyway, Thank you and Happy Scott-mas!

I want to run with you into the winter sea with joy overflowing from where the waves breathe, to the endlessly distant horizon. I watch your video while looking at the winter sea. I was so moved by your video that I can't forget it even in my dreams, and happiness overflows. When I watch your video, everything feels like a dream. How did you do it so that you have such a wonderful talent that is full of strange charms unique to your video? I was amazed at the excellence of your skills and was moved by your sincerity and hard work while watching the video. I'm looking at your video like a dream. My eyes were moved by your image and fell in love. By chance, as the algorithm introduced me, when I opened my CZcams window, the first video I saw was your video.

As I lived far away in Tasmania , Australia when I so eagerly awaited the release of "SCOTT 1 "...I became obsessed to a very large degree---it was an interior personal obsession, as nobody I came into contact with in my world knew who Scott was.....when he "disappeared " for many many years I kept on going......awaiting, listening for ANY news of him, and of any NEW ALBUM. "TILT " broke the drought, and on I went.....right to the end..."SOUSED " Now, with great satisfaction I can see around me " the world " has woken-up....a lot more people now dig Scott !!! Sadly he is no longer with us, but we have his output....his wonderful unique view of his art. You can't describe his essence.....the slim volume "SUNDOG " is far too slim...one aches for more of his late poetry.

At the time, I found Roger Waters' songs utterly boring...except his beautiful 'Julia Dream' on one of their sixty's singel flipsides. So I find Rick Wright's 'Summer 68' on the Atom Heart Mother album quite underrated. It's dramatically exciting! For the same reason I also enjoy Riick's Sysyphus on Umma Gumma another stand-out track.
Roger still had a lot of better composing to learn!
    Just a personal opinion 😁
Btw, your reviews are amazing. I'm now clicking the 'Beach Boys'!

Would agree with almost all of this. I think you have it spot on with Scott 3 and 4 as the top tier early albums with the later avant garde albums just as good if not perhaps better but in an entirely different way. I am doing a listen a thon in order and agree with you about The Moviegoer in particular as very underrated. Tbh if I was Scott I would have put that and Any Day Now back out as they're slightly better than the next two (though I am very impressed with Scott tackling Use me on Stretch!)

I know what you mean, I see “Till the band comes in” as the epilogue to the ‘60’s era - the last time Scott would ever make an album that sounded like one of the “Scott” albums. I love the album myself and think that it’s very underrated - but “Scott 5” it is not, in my opinion.

    • @robbiearroyo2292
      @robbiearroyo2292 Před rokem +1

@Edward mulholland that does make sense, I'd never really thought of it that way before. I suppose TTBCI is also a bit more American in its attitude and style. Much less of a European sound on that one. Probably my favorite Scott record if I had to pick because it's just so conceptual (well, minus the covers tacked on at the end).

I love “Till the band comes in” as much as S3 and S4 to be honest. I love the concept and I love Scott’s double tracked vocals which harks back to the Walker Brothers days as well, and Angela Morley’s arrangements are incredible!
The song “Long about now” sung by Esther Ofarim is just beautiful and is one of Scott’s best songs from the period - but I love all the songs, even the covers.

I believe in inspiration for TIlt, Scott listened to Nine Inch Nails and got struck by it. Even by looking at the killer art. Just like how other older acts such as Killing Joke and David Bowie were inspired by Trent and the upcoming mainstream industrial scene into helping reinventing themselves for the better.
Because I started with sunn o))) and Soused it wasn't until I went full circle and visited all of Scott's discography only to close it with Soused. It made more sense and was underrated. I ended up enjoying it more than the second and third parts of the trilogy.

Scott is truly transcendent the early albums are some of the most beautiful I have ever heard though don't agree with your rankings of songs on each album in general in full agreement but couldn't rank them lots of 12 out of 10 albums for me, then you get to those last 3 albums music from a different planet, the only comparison is another unique band Einstruzende Neubauten who are also challenging intense but capable of great beauty too, and oh if you are interested in a band using lydian rhythms have you ever heard of Cardiacs, Tim Smith is another musical genius
