Between the areas of Agios Stefanos Avliotes and Agios Georgios Pagon lies the seaside settlement of Arillas, which stands out for its amazing beach. It is located at a distance of 33 kilometers from the city and is an ideal destination for those who love peace, tranquility and isolation.
The village develops along the characteristic golden beach. It is actually an extensive beach with sand and pebble spots, which has been awarded the Blue Flag and despite tourism keeps its natural beauty unchanged. For 30 years the beach and shops have offered their hospitality to visitors from many European and non-European countries, as well as from Greece, who continue to return year after year.
The beach is famous for its natural beauty, crystal clear and shallow waters, amazing sunsets, fine golden sand which is perfect especially for families with small children. Strong winds often blow in the area and it is suitable for windsurfing . There are also the options of boat hire or taxi boat service to explore the surrounding areas.
Arillas also boasts the Corfu Beer Brewery , which also organizes an annual beer festival and is very popular especially with foreign visitors.
Along the coast one can find many tavernas that offer many choices and one can also enjoy pleasant walks to the cape that lies between it and Agios Stefanos Avliotes .
It offers basic services for the tourist, there are supermarkets and tourist shops and in terms of accommodation it offers accommodation such as hotels, apartments and small studios.
Arillas is connected to Corfu town and other villages several times each day by the local bus service. There is also the possibility to rent cars, jeeps, motorbikes or bicycles for more independent movement.
t is possible that the name "Arillas" is from the Roman proto-Christian era because at that time it was customary to name a location by taking as a name the abundance of some objects that existed or flourished there and adding the Latin suffix "ille".
In the area at that time there was an abundance of a type of oak called " Aria " (Aria is still called today by the elders), very good wood for building ships, and this is how Arillas was born. According to another version, Arillas was named after a Roman general Arillas who had his camp in the area during the Roman occupation.
In the natural ports of Porto-Timoni and Limni, ships used to find protection while waiting for better weather to continue. In Gravia, the big waves were breaking up, offering a beach.
The fertile small plain of Arillas with its mild microclimate has always nourished its inhabitants and kept the human presence. But these advantages once became disadvantages when conquerors, corsairs and pirates tried to benefit from the area. The toponyms Merovigli and Vardia testify to the problems of the pre-1800 era and the difficulty of permanent residence there. Life returned to normal shortly after 1800. However, there were large landowners who owned almost all the fertile land. Older people remember the soliatikas (payment in kind) that their fathers gave to the lords.
The inhabitants initially lived in houses, built with a few stones in the foundations and clay bricks (splitters) from the ground up. Later and little by little they built better houses by collecting stones. The lack of adequate clothing, long hours of manual labor and high child mortality are characteristic of this period. Heroine women, almost always in a state of pregnancy, participate in house construction, agriculture, animal husbandry, have exclusively the "industry" at home (making bread, food, clothing, etc.), taking care of the sick and the elderly .
After 1950, the people of Arilliotes, with contributions and personal work, built roads, a church, a cemetery and a primary school, organizing their social life on a new basis.
