When I was homeless in the late 90's I used to listen to this song to go to sleep. Lying on a park bench staring at the stars, wrapped up in a sleeping bag. And just letting this roll out on my walkman, it was the last song on that side of the cassette too. So I usually just closed my eyes and tried to sleep after the song ended. A really lovely memory from a challenging time in my history.
What a lovely little vignette from what, I'm sure, was a very trying existence. I read it as the song was playing in the background and it got me all teary-eyed.
Well, I’d not come back to this track in a long time. It always gave me solace and comfort. But not that it was needed like you needed. That seems absolute. Glad you’re beyond it, wish better days for anyone with a Walkman and a bench tonight.
I discovered this song shortly after becoming a Dad for the first time. Sang it to both my girls every night i put them to bed. Not ashamed to say i got a little misty when i found this video. Thank you for posting friend.
My dad used to sing this to me when I was young - one of my favorite bedtime lullabies. It makes me tear up remembering those days… when I have kids of my own, I will definitely be singing this to them, too. Such a beautiful song.
I was half way through listening to this two nights ago when my wife who is a nurse at a local hospital in the pediatric intensive care unit texted me about a baby she was caring for, the little one was waiting on a heart transplant but was not expected to survive even if one became available, I choked on that for a little then told my wife to google this song and maybe play it to the baby...... true story.....
This song was a lullaby written by Barry Andrews for his son Finn, who grew up to write his own wonderful songs as front man for the Veils. And time marches on. ;)
Been a fan of The Veils since they first came out, and JUST realized his father was also the man behind Shriekback, a band I was really into around the time this came out.....amazing.
And Finn closes the new Veils album "and out of the void comes love" with his version of this song some 36 years later for his recently born daughter 😀
This must be the most delicately beautiful song ever written about a parent's love for a child. It was given to me long ago on a magical mix tape and I never, ever forgot it. After the tape broke, I spent years searching for it with no luck. Now here it is, and I am so grateful. If I ever have children of my own, this will be the first song they'll ever hear.
I've shared this song with several expecting parents (and sent them the lyrics). It's the most beautiful lullaby I've ever heard. "May you never know hunger. May love with a full heart, light stay in your eyes . . ." Such a beautiful thing to hope for a child.
My mom used to play this for me all the time when I was little. I was so excited to grow up and now I'm almost 20 years old and moving from Indiana to Florida for an internship in a few months, which will be the first time I've ever stayed away from home. I'm already so homesick imagining being away from my family. I know it sounds so lame and no one probably cares, but this song is making me cry at 2 am and I had to vent somewhere lol.
+xMonsterAtHeart I'M SURE YOU HAVE ALREADY DISCOVERED sorry I'll turn that down... that you are strong independent and capable. And if you haven't discovered that yet, you are. Someone cares and all the best.
You had a wise, wonderful mom. You should read these lyrics aloud for her as a blessing today. May the moon light your way ‘til the wind sets you free.
This is the most beautiful song to a child I have ever heard. I bought Big Night Music in 1987, when I came across it in a used record store in Lawrence, Kansas. It is the first album I ever bought just because I loved the cover, and the song list and notes looked pretty cool, too. "The Blessed Dark." No idea what they sounded like. Wow. Like nothing I had ever heard before. I played the hell out of that LP.
I had a friend once who totally got this kind of stuff. She was the quintessential mother. It was 1989. I kept telling her she HAD to hear this song. Well fine, you know. But it doesn't ever seem to be in the rotation on all of those top 40 radio stations. We were both poor as dirt. But somehow I managed to scrape up enough scratch to buy it. I raced over to her place. OMG all hell was breaking loose over who knows what. And again. And again. Kids screaming...dogs barking...phones ringing. I felt like the universe was playing a colossal joke on me and really enjoying it. Every time I asked her her face would twist a little bit tighter. Well finally the kids were asleep, all the local idiots had gone home and we could both sit down. I said, "Oh Glinda..." as I waved the tape in the air. She started protesting but I stood up and said that I'd been raving about this song for months now. I actually bought the cassette. And I had been waiting patiently all day. All I was asking for was just 4 minutes and 15 seconds of her time. Glinda trust me when I tell you that this is NOT the time for you to nut up on me. Okay? She finally said yes. Play it. So I did. I spent the next four minutes and 15 seconds sitting motionless, scarcely breathing. I couldn't bring myself to look upon her face. When it was over a very distinctive hush softly blanketed the room and then I heard the sound of her sob. I quickly looked up at her and she was sitting there, tears streaming down her face. She said that that was all she had ever wanted for her children. She said she had never heard anyone put all of it in one place like that band did. And she thanked me.
I sang this song to my son when he was a tiny baby and cried and cried with tears of love and joy. Thank you so very much for giving us a chance to revive such heavenly memories. I sent a link to my son and he actually remembers me singing this to him!
This is a very special song for our family because it reminds us of my grandad, who died just before his son, (my uncle) was born. Whenever we hear this song, we cry.

Wow! I am a Shriekback fan but I have never heard this song before! It's beautiful. Touches the heartstrings, giving me goosebumps. It's like a prayer.I've posted it on facebook too. I LOVE IT!!! Thank you for posting this & thanks to Shriekback for making this beautiful song! XXX
I sang this song to my boys when they were babies. It’s the first time I’ve heard it in years and it randomly popped up in an unrelated mix. Today is the 4th anniversary of my oldest son’s passing.
This song is even more appropriate at the beginning of a life than it is at the end of one. My 1st child was born 3 & 1/2 months early with sever cerebral palsy. We are all beginning to die the moment we are born
Alas! This song has been posted!!! THANK YOU!!! Big Night Music is one of my favorite albums of all times. I've still got the CD, but the quality is not as good as is posted here (been played many, many times). This song and this album brings back many pleasant memories. Yet it, as does all of Shriekback's music, always sounds avant garde. Sheer brilliance!!!
Great song from a unique and innovative band even though some of their stuff is a acquired taste. Have a lot of their stuff on vinyl including this. Thanks to Michael Mann for using them in his movies and introducing this band to more people.
thanyou thankyou,,,this is the first song I played when I brought my new baby girl Home .Its what I wanted to play at her christenning.Have the cassette upstairs,,great band ,,love the song.
Thank you so much. I've been hunting this song like the Predator. Such a shame that this album can't be bought any longer. Even more tragic, is the fact that I have it in my house, but can't find it!!!!!

I’m just now moving out as an 18 year old and it’s terrifying. Hope you’re well almost a decade later.
My mum sang this to me as a baby/young child.
She found it after so many years of looking and sent it to me.
Definitely misty eyed

Still singing this prayer for my children ❤️

Perfect wiccan blessing in the chorus, calling on fire, water, earth, and air for protection...

Cradle Song • SHRIEK BACK
LYRICS :
Sing a cradle-song now, as the light fades around us
And you breathe like the ocean, lying small in my arms
See it all in a moment - you so young and unclouded
Shining bright as a lion - feel the motion of time
As the world rolls away from the sun.
I can feel your life burning - unlived moments within you
Further than I can see...
May the fire be your friend and the sea rock you gently,
May the moon light your way - till the wind sets you free
I remember your face as you cried for the first time
The cold air of the world and the fierce light of day
And the cruel separation in a world washed with tears;
Numbed with pain to unfeeling - May you hold to your truth
As you walk the dark night of unreason
The stone walls which surround us - may your spirit fly round them
Like the wind from the sea...
May the fire be your friend and the sea rock you gently,
May the moon light your way - till the wind sets you free
May you never know hunger: may you love with a full heart -
The light stay in your eyes...
May the fire be your friend and the sea rock you gently,
May the moon light your way - till the wind sets you free
May the fire be your friend and the sea rock you gently,
May the moon light your way - till the wind sets you free....
