The Capitol Theater, Passaic NJ September 1985. This is where I saw Metallica with Metal Church opening in November 1986. 9th show ever with Jason Newstead.
This particular performance never ever gets old, and always brings me to tears. SRV is not music. He is and was a pure channel. SRV is a life-altering experience to behold, and to thank the Lord for giving him to us to take in. Thank You Jamal. And of of course, Thank you SRV.
Favorite performer favorite song he does. This was written for Stevie's friend Charley Wirz who was a mentor and helped Stevie in how he designed his guitars and who died of a heart attack. He changed guitars in the middle because it was the guitar they worked on together. This white guitar was named Charlie after his friend. The beat up guitar is Number One. In the fall of 1985, Stevie went into rehab at the same time as his best friend bassist Tommy Shannon. He was clean and sober almost 4 years. He helped many people into sobriety including Bonnie Raitt another great blues guitarist and singer. Stevie is my favorite but I love him even more as the very humble man he became and very giving and gentle which was so opposite his fierce stage presence. Tommy Shannon always wanted that known.
Eric Clapton was the one who reached out to Stevie and got him into rehab. He also got his brother Jimmy clean and sober. Jimmy credits Stevie with saving his life.
Its really a shame how our world wide media is now treating Eric Clapton and trying to smear his reputation. I'm thankful everyday for all of us whom, for whatever reason, the narrative programming just didn't work on...
Please watch Stevie perform this same song after he got sober. It’s such a beautiful transformation of the man and his message! Take care of yourself so you can be there for others! Stevie was an amazing soul and human being! I’m blessed to have met him during a set break in 1983🙏 He was so kind of humble! Until we meet again…Fly on!!! 💫
If everyone could've been there, Stevie could've ended racism and every other hate crime with that song. Tunes like that will have you feeling some type a way. You can't hate and be able to play with that much feeling.
I cry Everytime I hear this song. I lost my husband 5 years ago and what Stevie says is so true. Dont take what you have for granted it' could be gone before you know it.. Such a great song. Now move pure ready for Riviera Paradise and Couldn't stand the weather. I'm so thankful I had this music in my life.
Shelly, my beautiful wife of 22 years passed away on Dec. 2nd, just over a month ago. I still can't quit crying. If people only understood the pain we both know about...they'd stop and never take another minute for granted. Bless you and I hope you've found a way to push through your loss....I'm trying my best.
I just came across this thread which brought tears to my eyes. The holidays are the hardest. I am sincerely sorry to hear about your pain and offer prayer that day by day you are able to move a step at a time. And that loved ones will help ease the pain. Best wishes Shelly and Rick.
Smoothest string break and guitar replacement ever. Not to mention the missing tooth he had to find. He plays super thick strings. His guitars get worked out.
It wasn't a string break he always tried to use the white guitar for this song. It was written for his friend Charley Wirz who was a mentor and helped Stevie in how he designed his guitars. This was one of them. He named the guitar Charlie. He noticed that he had the wrong guitar.
He was so humble and appreciated everything he had and was willing to help out anyone that really needed any help no matter who you was . He is sadly gone but his music and message will live on.
There will never, and I mean never, be another Stevie Ray Vaughan. The man was one of a kind, placed here to embody the spirit of music itself. Rest In Peace Stevie!
I saw brother Steve open for the Moody Blues in 1978 when I was 8 years old. Nobody knew who he was at the time but I knew one thing. He was not going to be an opening act for long. He was a virtuoso.
This song was written for a dear friend of SRV named Charley Wirz. Charley was the guy who built the white Stratocaster (which really isn't a Strat, but a strat style guitar made from a bunch of pieces that Wirz had lying around his music shop) that this song was played on during live performance; he also plays tin pan alley on this guitar quite often. The fact that he wrote such a beautiful piece for his departed friend is a testament to how heartfelt the loss was to Stevie.
Yes, yes, yes, Jamel! SRV IS an underrated singer. His voice was 1) pitch perfect, and 2) perfect for his music. SRV has an incredible voice, a beautiful voice!
Did anyone notice that flawless guitar switch at 3:09 in this video? The professionalism Stevie had is off the charts, but that guitar tech deserves recognition. Flawless switch, not a note lost. RIP dear Stevie. Your music continues to bring joy to many, on this day and into eternity. We were blessed to have you.
I remember in an interview he though that he wasn't very good at singing but we all agree he was the whole package.... One of the best guitarist ever, awesome vocals and just cool all round
This reaction touches my heart. SRV was my late husbands favorite artist, we had seen him LIVE almost a dozen times in our 36 years together, before SRV passed. Late last year I went to move my husbands truck to drain the rainwater and inadvertently switched the audio from FM to his CD player and this song came on, I felt him near me. "Thank you... for all the love you passed our way".
I'll always remember waking up to news that Stevie died in a helicopter crash after a concert. It was the first time I ever cried over a musician's death.
A message in 1985 that is also so relevant today , hope your brothers get a chance to react this too . Thanks for reacting to this . Would have loved to have been there . R.I.P.

Thanks for the reaction video! This was the one and only song I ever requested! For me it hits home after losing someone who meant the world to me! ONLY Stevie Ray could have that kind of effect universally! May anyone who is touched by this song feel the blessings of the ones they’ve lost! Mahalo!
"It's like that they're somewhere else" I've seen that face on musicians ranging from Carlos Santana, to Herbie Hancock to Yo Yo Ma. I think they might be in that place where notes are formed and it's their job to bring that music to earth. Could be wrong on that point, but hey it's a good enough premise.
This always brings tears to my eyes. I got into SRV in the summer. He taught how to play my guitar with soul and feeling. I only ever listen to Stevie and Elvis. Best thing is I’m a teen and have my whole life to listen and discover people like this.
Stevie always played and spoke that big, beautiful soul of his! A wise and loving man was taken from us WAY too soon. The back story on this particular song was that he wrote it for a friend of his named Charley Wirz, owner of Charley's Guitar Shop in Dallas. Charley was another of Stevie's father figures -- along with the likes of Albert and B.B. King. Charley died of a heart attack in 1985. He had made Stevie Ray Vaughan the white Strat-style Danelectro guitar with lipstick tube pickups and presented it to him in 1983 with the inscription on it that said "More in '84." Charley's death was a huge blow to Stevie, hence, the song "Life Without You."
Yes, Stevie, life without you... We understand. 💔 You'd almost never even notice the guitar switch, incredible stagehands. This was an amazing performance. Story has it that his brother Jimmy found Stevie's squash blossom necklace at the crash sight. Heartbreaking. Must be one of Jimmy's most prized possessions 🥺 I'm only about 30 miles away from Alpine, so the tears come easy thinking back. Beautiful message he had this performance. Jamel, thanks for keeping it alive ❤️🎸❤️
@CuzKatieSaysSo It was Stevie's beautiful Coptic cross that was found at the crash site & given to Jimmy the next morning, just as they were leaving. Stevie had worn it nearly every day, from right after rehab to his death. You see it in almost every video of him during those last 4 years. And Jimmy displays it in the Official video for "Tick Tock" that he made after Stevie's passing. It's so beautiful & unique, just like Stevie himself.💙☮
@@deborahcornell171 Ah, must have been a mistake then. I think the story came from one of the local newspapers. Hard to believe the cross was found and not the squash blossom, which, because of its size, would have been so much easier to come off. Wonder what became of it. We couldn't make those concerts, had spent too much money on Grateful Dead shows during the summer, but my brother was there, he said it was an awesome show. Good to know the correction, but I will always wonder about the squash blossom necklace.
I've been waiting since your first reaction to SRV to hear this song and this exact performance just to hear your response to that message. The song is already my favorite. But the message is ETERNAL.Edit: One thing I want to add here; For historical context, his speech mid song was based around Apartheid in South Africa "The mother country, down south." It still applies to everyone everywhere.
I’m 59 years old and so glad I lived during the time to experience Stevie and of course many other greats my life as far as music goes has been wonderful. I really feel blessed. Music is very spiritual to me.
Thing with Stevie, he meant it. You can tell it is his genuine feelings, his message came through his speech and his guitar told you the story too. This one brings me to tears both from the emotion and from missing him
He was high as F back in those days, 4 grams of coke a day, later in life after he sobered up and he would preach about not using and taking care of your loved ones in this song.
Stevie's brother, Jimmie shared your opinion on his voice being underrated/overshadowed by his amazing guitar skills. He didn't think Stevie got enough credit for being a damn fine blues singer.
all kinds of things happen while he's playing and he still pulls off what is imo his and THE best performance of any musician, the lyrics, the message, the emotion, the play, the presence..he practically levitates, he's captivating, you just know you're witnessing lightning in a bottle, like a guy who played with him as a kid once said when stevie was in the studio at 13, he made everyone feel special just by witnessing what he was doing, whole studio full of grown men in awe of a kid, of all the reaction videos I've seen here I haven't seen anyone get their minds blown the way SRV does it, seeing him is like seeing something that shouldn't exist
I was fortunate enough to see the great Stevie Ray Vaughan perform three times before he tragically died,,each time the enormity of his sound would set you back in your seat until you could grasp his greatness.
There are a HANDFUL of musicians, who when you see them and experience them live like this, you feel something of the Divine in them. Stevie IS one of those. He was put here to do exactly what he did. He was connected to something, there is no question. You couldn't watch him and not feel it. You knew you were witnessing something, a moment in our history that won't be repeated. He was and is such a blessing.
Isn't it something how you grow up loving a song. Then that person releases something new and you move on. And you forget! Then BAM! Here comes that dayum Jamel_Jamal and digs up something that brings you back to reality. Man, the tears are rolling! My childhood was so great because of Music just like this. Living in the house with a Top 40 band on deck. My mom made sure we appreciated every note of every instrument. And you were REQUIRED to find your talent. Dang! This! Hit me hard today. I'm snowed in here in NC today and I'm digging up music bones. Thanks Brother!
Saw him do this live at River fest. 1985 or 86. Summer night on bank of Mississippi river. Saint Paul MN. SEVEN DOLLAR TICKET PRICE. SEVEN DOLLARS. SEVEN!. He was wasted and threatened at end to jump down and smack some hooligans in the crowd. He nearly died of drug toxicity shortly after the show. But his brilliance on that night could not be suppressed, contained, or even adequately described to anyone not there. I stupidly passed on chance to see his last show ( had no car) but consider myself blessed to have seen him close a show with this number on a beautiful summer night. Thanks for taking me back..
SRV is amazing. He was as good a person as a musician, at least, if not better. In an interview of Chris Layton & Tommy Shannon on YT they told that one night they arrived at a venue they were playing, Red Rocks, and B.B. King was onstage playing. Stevie couldn't understand why he was playing. He was told B.B. was opening for him & Double Trouble. This upset Stevie and he made his displeasure known and that B.B. King or no other great blues players would ever open for him. A very humble guy. He loved those legends.
I totally agree with you...love the song but loved the message more. Stevie was a down to earth, good human being with a big heart. He constantly praised his guitar heros and was delighted to play with them. If you get a chance to see any of his interviews his love for his brothers shines through.
You know Stevie Ray Vaughan was such an amazing man with so much love and respect for everyone, just to think about how much he suffered as a child with an abusive alcoholic father that took alot of the abuse out on Stevie. It really helped me understand why Stevie turned to the alcohol at age 7 and drugs later I'm sure the pain he felt was terrible. To know people were just stating to get to know Stevie Ray before he was killed and now lots of people hear him and love him is heartbreaking.
The guitar swap in the beginning when his original guitar went flat was amazing. He never skipped a beat. That took talent. The world was robbed of so much epic music when he passed at the young age of 35. RIP Stevie Ray!
I think it was Jimmy Hendrix and Terry Kath's fault. They both approached Jesus and said "Hey Stevie is taking so long, and we need another guitarist here" We talked to his Daddy and he said it is up to you! You know they are Jammin' Damn! all 3 of those guys had so much more music to give, I miss them and if you look, all 3 had a devastating smile that was out of this world! A certain joy that can only come from places up on high! Jamel, thank you for inviting us into your house and share a little bit of your spirit. -G
Wish you could have seen him live, Jamel. The guy permanently changed how my ears work, so I know you'd still be feeling it. I remember at 24 hearing the news that he died, just a month or so after seeing him for the 2nd time. Even at 56 I still can't get over it. I hadn't seen this one before, but it's now my second fave performance of his, only behind Tightrope on Austin City Limits. He made that guitar grow HAIR in front of the camera.
There's a video of him doing this song after he was 100% sober and he would talk to the audience about not going down that road like he did, I wish I could remember which one. What a HUGE loss to the world...RIP SRV🙏
All that emotion he's expressing through his guitar 'Charley' for his friend 'Charley'; when I view the song's performance with that in mind, it gives me chills. What an intimate tribute to share with...everybody.
You know what always surprises me about Stevie is how in the middle of a song he will tweek the tunning on his guitar to get his sound. That man knew his guitar inside and out! 😎 it’s like they are one and the same🥰
This is Ray Vaughn at his lowest. This is right before he got clean. He looks really strung out. Even at his lowest points he makes such incredible beauty.
I love Stevie’s voice! This song gives me all the feels. I wish I could have met him and told him how much I love his music. I don’t feel this way about any other artist but I feel like it would have mattered to him. I feel like he wanted to connect with your soul through his music.
I was 15 and at this concert at the capitol theater, if my mom knew where I was I would still be grounded. Of all the songs he did that night this one has stuck with me for 37 years! I lived on Long Island New York so I was way outside the area I was allowed LOL. The message he gave that night needs to be repeated and repeated often!
Love his voice equally...yes underrated...one of my favs & saddest...it makes me think of Stevie himself & those wasted yrs we were robbed of...cudv been another Elvis...humble, all genres and never ever saw himself as better.....the Angels had to have the best RIP SRV 😕❣🇬🇧
Love that you admire and love him! I have loved and listened to him for at least 40 (he was a teenager). Was fortunate enough to see him in concert twice in St Louis
I saw Stevie at least 8 times or more, and he’d lay that message down somewhere in the show EVERY TIME I saw him. He was INCREDIBLE …….. I can still see those shows in my mind …….
I had the great fortune to see SRV 5 times and was always blown away. Early on he would drink so much and still play with such fire, then the last few shows he was sober and even better. I cried hard when he died because his music and message touched me deep. I still tear up when I see some of his shows, like this one, when you can see he is just channeling the spirits and his Higher Power.
Thank You Jamel for being a true brother.......and lovin some Stevie Ray Vaughn !!........much respect to you brother......and appreciate all you do for GREAT music !!
Jamel, You had a stank face the entire song more or less...... I would say it is IMPOSSIBLE to listen to this LEGEND without making that face. He is NEXT LEVEL talent.
Grew up in Ft.Worth tx. One night I was partying with friends in Haltom city and this song came on 98.9 KZEW ,it was love struck baby. It just blew me away . So glad I got to see him 3 times. Steve's music is music for the soul. There will never be another. RIP Steve you are truly missed.

I love how that his guitar is changed out and the song doesn't miss a beat.
In tennis you have ball-boys and girls. Stevie had guys crouching waiting for the signal to run in and switch guitars
The GOAT!!!!! STEVIE WILL ALWAYS BE THE GREATEST!!!!!
Do “Lenny” about his wife. He said the dominant chord he used he called the King Chord. A slower one from Stevie but still from his heart!
R.I.P. Mr. Vaughn and thanks for it all.
You were taken from us WAY TOO SOON.
Show this one to your brothers they will love it.
One of his best performances for me... so full of blues soul, so pure, so emotionally honest.
'You wanna do it right don't need to go the easy way' !
So good, I miss this man so much! Saw him live in '86
It's like he feels every note from the top of his head to the the tips of his toes
Legend. Absolute legend
He was a big inspiration for my
Blues playing for sure
Proof ! - " Faith with works " is still alive and well, and will live on..beauty !

One of the slickest guitar changes ever!
😎 it’s like they are one and the same🥰
Jamel, thanks for doing this one brother. I haven't heard this song for so long. That man had such a gift that he shared with the world.
What a beautiful human being and talent to boot a genius with the guitar...he is truly missed....❤❤❤RIP
It's the same message you deliever every day J... Every day... And thank you for doing so and being yourself.
He was a terrifying force of nature! His gift burned bright and quick!
I graduated in ‘85, but discovered him in ‘90!!😵🤯🔥
SRV was real folk.❤️
I love all of your reactions... but your SRV ones... The BEST!!!!!!!!! 💙💜💙 And this particular SRV reaction... so special... Thank you!!
Jamel, You had a stank face the entire song more or less...... I would say it is IMPOSSIBLE to listen to this LEGEND without making that face. He is NEXT LEVEL talent.
One of my favorite songs of his his. I like this version but love the studio version because of the guitar work.
I saw him 3 xs, AMAZING!!! He still brings tears to my eyes listening to this... how can u listen & not feel this?? RIP my friend
Makes me emotional every time, Perfect performance and amazing message. I was smiling waiting for that and your reaction :)
I had the privilege of seeing Stevie 3 times in my life. It was always a love fest!!! One of the most genuine souls in the universe!!
