- A family goes camping to a remote forest -- and discovers that monsters are real.
THE ENCOUNTER AT BOUNDLESS is used with permission from Adam Spinks. Learn more at ajspinksfilmmaker.com.
Travis is an estranged father taking his two kids -- teenager Kaela and her younger brother Max -- on a camping trip for the weekend to spend some much-needed time with them. Since separating from their mother, he has been avoiding spending time with them but he wants to reconnect.
What is supposed to be a peaceful natural excursion, though, is more fraught than he intended. Kaela is resentful and dismissive of his efforts, ignoring him for her phone. And then there is the matter of a strange presence in the woods... one that asserts itself just when the family seems furthest apart.
Written by Theresa Hedges and directed by Adam Spinks, this short weaves a beautifully observed, sensitive family drama with the uneasiness and slow dread of a horror film, exploring the tensions between parents and children in a broken family dynamic.
The storytelling has a sharp, clear eye for the way that tension and uneasiness simmer under surfaces, from the silences between people to the sinister hum of wind in the air. From the beauty of the cinematography to the emphasis of the performances on the unspoken and unexpressed, almost all aspects of the film bear the quality of patience, sculpting each moment and story beat with great care and letting them unfold masterfully.
The pacing makes for a slow burn in the progression of the narrative, taking the time to painstakingly establish the dynamics of the family, starting with a strained exchange of the kids where the looks between parents say more than any number of words could. The drive to the campsite is equally full of tension, and the iciness between father and daughter shows no sign of thawing, even as Max and his father begin to address the breach in their relationship.
Actor Adrian Annis as the father balances competing currents of shame, hopefulness and love, especially as he attempts to connect with his children, who are played with subtlety and intelligence by actors Kyla Heselton and Nathan Horrod. The story slowly leaves clues and weaves an increasingly disquieting atmosphere around this family unit. When both familial tension and the hidden threat come out into the open, father and children must come together to escape it.
The horror aspect of THE ENCOUNTER AT BOUNDLESS clearly leaves enough room for viewers to remain curious about. But the short still feels like a complete story on its own, thanks to the deep emotional investment it's created for viewers, bringing together the broken pieces of a once intact family unit in a satisfying way. They have to connect, or else fall prey to a much scarier threat. Their reconciliation is beautiful to watch, and we come to root for Travis and his kids. So it is all the more disquieting when a larger threat seems to emerge at the story's end, darkening this hard-won healing and leaving viewers wanting more of an intriguing, beautifully crafted world. - Krátké a kreslené filmy
I thought that the monster would be metaphorical or figurative. I didn't hope to see some serious CGI here! Cool.
thanks so much for watching our movie! I'm so pleased you enjoyed it
@dr4kz0r thanks for your kind words about the monster. Not sure what you mean by feministic values but I’m pleased you had an emotional response to our story!
The movie reminded me the old 2001 game "Venom codename outbreak", released as a normal war game... At least till you don't find, after some hours of game, these weird monsters in the woods make you think WTF?
It still was metaphorical, yes.
Boy: *blatantly tells the Ranger everything*
Also Boy: *Dad! he knows*
Never have kids folks. Never have kids.
Thanks so much for watching our film!
I thought the same thing.
Kid obviously knew that he knew before letting him know that they know.
It’s a good thing your mother didn’t think that way!!
lmao 😆
These films aren't just being made good, they're being made FAST.
Omelete doesn’t produce every movie, they just air it
since they r short films
@d3adsoulja since they short they can be made fast
@d3adsoulja I realized that a good while ago, long before you decided to say what numerous people were screaming in my face. I always thought that meant that his films were just Oscar winning and he had a funny way of saying it.
Better still, they're being made well and they're being made quickly. ;)
Thank you everybody who has watched the film and has taken the time to leave a comment. Means a lot to the whole team
I’ll second that!
Hey AJ, Loved the film. The pacing was well done. The acting was well directed. The sound design and the CGI were hollywood quality. Loved it. Eager to see what else your team will do.
it was great!
Great start to a full length film. Like to see where it would go.
You all worked really hard, but the outcome has been so worth it - even the days filming in the dark and the rain !!
Only silver lining other than coming out alive is his relationship with his daughter has improved. Great film.
Thanks so much !
You think they really made it out alive??
@@nikeuchiha3675 well i KNOW what happened because I wrote the movie but I love how many options there is!
You can’t beat a good monster sighting to fix a father/daughter rift ! (At least that’s what I keep telling our own daughter ! 🤦🏻♂️)
So, a man that leaves his wife for another woman, is the bad guy. A woman that leaves her husband for another woman, and the husband is the bad guy. ok, got it.
for us it was always that there's right and wrong on both sides of any argument and that it's so easy to get into entrenched positions and forget about other stuff. This film is about common ground and remembering the simple stuff
I don’t think he is portrayed as the bad guy. He is struggling with the fact his wife left him. His kids, especially the daughter, are bitter about the fact it seems he’s deserted them. He’s dealing with the situation in his own way, maybe not the best way, but his own way.
@@SMaamri78 Agreed. Anyway when marriages break up kids either blame themselves or blame one of the parents. They need help working through it and learning there are usually no bad guys.
Children always act out on the parent they feel safest with and loved by the most. This is actually the same for all beings.
Like my dad always saids. It's in the script lol
I have a feeling they’re never leaving that area and they’re never going home… would love to see a part 2.

I'd rather the unknowns were just left hanging. Sequels lead to more sequels until you get the inevitable low-quality ones. I like movies and books that resist the compulsion to explain everything.
@@dontaylor7315 my brother makes those kind of movies. The only thing good about an artsy fartsy movie with no ending is not having to watch a sequel with no beginning or ending... especially if your younger sibling who everyone loves more than you even though you worked hard your entire life and have to support him longer than your own children who have already moved out and started lives of their own allowing him to move from the couch to the basement to a room after they left.
Sorry, I have issues. He did star in one monster movie I like. Killed the monster, got the girl and made the DVD cover.
So proud......

Thanks for the kindness from so many lovely viewers. It’s good to know just how many folks appreciate how much work from so many people goes into creating even a short film like this. Magic doesn’t happen by magic! 😉
Who needs to go camping when his house was so beautiful and out in the woods already
he probably just spent a full year in his house during lockdown!!
maybe the camping trip is more about the kids.
I know if I had a place that was in such a great location, I sure as hell wouldn't go some place else to camp, NOPE!!!! Having a nice home in a beautiful setting would definitely be a big plus for me.
I live in the woods and people ask me to go camping. I get up walk out I'm in the woods. ..same thing!

monster represents demon that causes same s*x attraction in women (pretty sure I'll get censored if I name it); ranger at the end represents modern society: willing to kill anyone who sees the evil for the repulsive and truly deadly evil it is to prevent them from revealing the truth to the world.
Go ahead--prove me wrong.
I gotta hand it to him not freaking out at the first sight of that thing
so did we!
@@ajspinks268 just wanna ask, are you one of the directors of the film?
Agreed! Fear makes people do odd things sometimes!
@Keir Winter I like that idea. maybe the scientific experiments they're doing is on people's minds.
I think they were somehow connected. At first I thought "monster" representing dad wirh alcohol abuse so I thought he was gonna do something more horrible. Thank God I was wrong
Kiki's part, although pretty stereotypical, was played very well. Max, pretty solid too. The dad, not bad. The monster, definitely the best.
You forgot the Mum and the Ranger ?! They were really good too 👍
Extremely well done. In such little time you captured the essence of the father and his two kids. The only thing that was odd was the reaction of the father upon meeting the monster; smiling along with his calm expression just seemed very unusual, almost as if he knew something we didn't.
Thanks so much for watching our film and for your kind words
He was a little drunk,
So.maybe at first he didn't process what he was seeing... thought it was a hallucination, or something
... until it frightened him by stamping its foot.
The most out-of-place things are the shiny and brand new stuff in the garage 1:03 🤣
well he was drunk !
well given what his wife did to him with another woman... he probably was welcoming the idea of it finishing him off right there... he was well lit up drunk and depressed... what snapped him back was the fact that he realized after he was taken out... it would then move on to his innocent son and brainwashed daughter...
I'll take my chances at a Motel 6 ... they leave the light on 🤣
Thanks so much for watching our film!
Unreal that they didn't talk about or seem incredulous about the monster.
I actually take this note and we talked a lot about it! At the end of the day, we felt it would slow this particular iteration of the story way down so we left it on the cutting room floor!
and that they concordantly keep it a secret . (I assume the "don't speak" part pertains to among each other). I wonder if they will be held for questioning down the road or even surveyed from now on.
@@ajspinks268 Honestly a good call and a refreshing take.
Also seemed a bit unrealistic that they could fall peacefully asleep after such an encounter. Just watching it could keep me awake for hours! LOL! But movies of all kinds have those kind of moments that probably wouldn't happen in real life. It was a really good story with a cliff hanger ending that leaves everyone free to imagine their own ending. (I still want to see a part 2 though!) (:
@@hemmojito Or maybe they disappear and are never heard from again.....and maybe it's because Dad will become one of those monsters having been bitten by it. The kids are just collateral damage. They have to stay and live their lives in secret, possibly becoming prisoners or maybe members of the research team. Either way they disappear as far as the rest of the world knows. OR maybe they are just killed. Nah....that's not creative enough. Just being killed would be too common. Definitely need a creative part 2 to bring some closure to this. Then maybe a part 3! (:
WoW. Very good! I think the guy hinted at a possible "mutation", since he had direct contact with the "specimen"??
thanks so much! We appreciate you taking the time to watch the film
How would direct contact cause a "mutation"?
@@thedirepuppy6571 Huh? I dunno, maybe because the creature cut him and the Ranger hinted that the cut could be a lot more serious than it looks, i.e. changing his dna or the creatures!
@@c-tha-man9463
The creature may have passed on a carcinogen. Then the mutation could be a cancer.
Altering his DNA? That may (going WAY out on a limb here) have an affect on future offspring, but not on him. Certainly not something like Lon Chaney turning into the wolf man. That's comic book movie stuff, not reality.
@@purplesky416
That's the problem. Imagination is not used, if not already in it's death throes.
Isn't that the premise of practically every comic book movie/ TV show out there? Look at me! I'm a mutant!
Move along. No imagination here!

Hope to God no man has to go through what that guy went through
Poor ass writing. There is no ending.
Thank you for sharing your film with us. I thought that the daughter was a well written character.
Hopefully you get funding for the remainder.
I think dad knew something was out there. He almost seemed glad the monster showed up. I’m thinking family annihilation but then he had second thoughts.
He reacted that way because he felt it was a prank he drank heavily before going to bed and woke up to such sight and maybe thought it’s just his imagination playing a fast one on him until the monster put a foot down
Family relationships are complicated but they all still love each other. It took an out of this world encounter to mend the upset. Devine intervention.
I loved the characters. I just hope they don't end up being killed if there's a part 2. I mean the "ranger" could have already killed them. The monster or alien was also really well done. I love these shorts!
thanks so much for your kind words about our film Clarissa! Means so much to myself and the whole team too
@@ajspinks268 You're very welcome. I can't wait to see more from you all!! 🖤
Please don’t make part 2 where they have to flee for their lives and be hunted down to be killed for witnessing it. If the security guy wanted to kill them he could’ve done it when the little kid gave it away. Better that they would be under surveillance for a time so if they said something they could be discredited or taken to the side and explained why they shouldn’t say anything if it was legitimately something that needed to be kept quiet. ( like an inquisitive alien just visiting but doing no real harm but expected and known to them…. Hence the asteroid story on the news.
Also…. Any facility that really wanted to be kept secret would have MUCH better maintained signs and video security where they would’ve been detected on arrival. Part 2 could be great if not going down these standard overdone routes. IMHO.
But very well done and I liked it. 🙂👍

So many great short stories here that deserve a series of follow-ups eh? Am I right? Of course I am. Well done all.
Well done.

@@ajspinks268 I subscribed you. You did awesome. Gift us some more like this.....😊
What a wonderful story ❤ of Family resilience and finding each other. Even though this was a short film, the father learned his Beautiful Daughter was incredibly smart and His Son also was in tuned into what was going on with the family dynamics for his age. Ah! Now the Alien, who refreshingly didn't have 2 legs and was very scary. But you left ( I'm moaning now lol) the story wide open for a sequel (part 2) this short story could make for a rather interesting movie. I Loved the Actors and they deserve a Applause because they were excellent. Thank you 😊 for a rather interesting Story/topic.....now please 🙏 A movie ?.
Nope, be satisfied with what you see. The writers are too lazy to write a good ending.
I perceived the ending that indicated that their vehicle was blown up before they could exit the park.
Short & sweet, but well done!!!👍
Better than most two hour big budget movies! Great job guys.
Great film! Would love to see this as a feature and see what happens next!
thank you so much for watching! Glad you liked it :)
So glad you enjoyed it!
Love to see a full length pic. Good start. Do a sequel!
Thanks so much! We are working on something actually! Pleased you enjoyed it
I remember camping on a field trip when I was about 8-yrs-old, I had to pee in the middle of the night and the trip to the outhouse was a frightening experience. I did make it back to the tent and could not wait to get out of that campsite.
It’s our own experiences like this that inspired us to make this film! Thanks so much for watching!
Moral of the story... never go camping.
Some of the places in this film were beautiful.
Thanks Christi! Locations, I find, are super crucial to making a great movie!
awesome, i'd love to see more of this. give me a mini series at least, please.
A great monster for true . . . and nicely done!
Some of these brilliant short movies I wish were a full length movie. I'd watch it.
Thanks so much for watching our film! Thrilled you enjoyed it!
