    I’ve found that I really value seeing my coffee (typically pour over) so I go for glass over ceramic. I’ve been using the fellow stagg glasses for years but they break on occasion and sometimes moisture gets inside the double wall. I recently purchased a pair of the glass cups from April and I’m excited to use them.

    Great video, Brian. I’ve been a wine and whiskey enthusiast for decades, as well as a coffee guy for almost as long. I’ve been into different vessels for coffee for a while and your video today resonated with me. I recently got the KRUVE for espresso and the larger ones for pour-over. Still like a mug with a handle on a Sunday morning for filter while I gaze out my window into the woods behind my house. It’s all about the experience, right? I will definitely look into pulling out my various snifters for coffee. Be well

    The level of aroma perception between this glass and my normal mug is frankly night and day, this was a fantastic recommendation on your part Brian. I agree that I will certainly keep using my favorite mugs to drink coffee from, but I'll definitely be using this beforehand so I can really get a sense of what notes and flavors are coming from my coffee.

    the wine and spirits world is for sure many miles ahead of coffee when it comes to understanding how to amplify the taste and smell experience through glassware. there is so much overlap in understanding taste and sensations across them too.

      I already have a local cafe that presents coffee like wine (explaining the name, origin, taste notes etc) when they serve it to you at the table but I wish they had special cups for certain coffees like for example the origami flavour cup set.

    My main espresso cups if I'm just having a straight shot are the Kruve Propels. I don't know that they've particularly enhanced my perception of the coffee, but they look nice and are double-walled. I don't know how much I trust swirling in them either despite that being their whole purpose. I feel like I'm still getting some stratification in my drink if I don't use a spoon. I have one of the Decent Tipsy cups as well, and those actually DO perceptibly enhance the aromas as advertised, but, as you noted, thin ceramic is kind of uncomfortable to hold. Their relatively small capacity also makes me a bit wary of pulling longer shots into them. It has the capacity, technically, but barely and it just feels precarious since it gets so hot/uncomfortable to hold too. I also just have some normal, cheap double-walled espresso glasses, but the thinner lip of the Kruve is just more pleasant to drink from for whatever reason.
    For milk drinks, I just have a cheap set of capuccino cups that a friend gifted me that work fine. I was recently gifted the Fellow Monty cortado cup too, which really feels like a pleasure to hold and drink from just from a pure build quality perspective, but it's a bit narrow for latte art, at least with my crap skills. The Kruve Imagine glasses look really cool to me, but so expensive. I only have the Kruve Propels, because I picked them up super cheap secondhand.

    Nice to see a fellow coffee nerd getting into whisky too! I have to agree the world of wine and spirits is far ahead of coffee in terms of the fuss that goes into water, and evaluative glass/ceramic ware. Funny to see a NEAT glass being used for coffee. I've done some brews for friends in glencairn glasses as well. I really like the 1920s blenders glass for the greatest ability of aromatic assessment though I can't imagine fitting that under an espresso machine.
    I was pleasantly surprised to recognize the white cup at the start of your video and was even more surprised seeing it was the exact soba choco cup I got from Glitch in their Nagoya branch a couple of months ago.
    My personal preference for cups these days for sensory purposes are the Figgjo Oslo cup set being sold by Tim Wendelboe. The Open cup is ideal 'neutral' for me and the Split cup and Tulip cup work as advertised. As a set, I highly recommend these over Origamis and Loveramics own sense cup set. I believe Suji Indonesia makes glass versions of the Figgjo Oslo set. It might be worth checking those out since you seem to enjoy glassware.
    I can PM you some links on instagram too if you'd like!

    Absolutely love this. I've been searching for the perfect cup. Haven't found it yet, but the search is enjoyable. Very interesting pulling espresso into the whiskey glass. I might try a shot in one of my Glencairns. I suspect the volume would be right for a standard double shot, and the heat issue is no big deal because you can hold the base while you wait for it to cool.
    I recently ordered some Loveramics cups, and the embossed mugs are quite a delightful addition. I find volume to be important as well. I think I have settled on 200-250mL as my ideal size. The 10oz NotNeutral Lino mugs are my largest, and probably as large as I'd care to go.
    I have been most curious to try the Mud Australia cups. They are glazed interior and unglazed exterior. I prefer the tactility of unglazed ceramics, but I think unglazed interiors are more difficult to clean and perhaps affect taste over time.
    With all the obsession with end game grinders and burrs and machines, I want some talk on end game mugs!!!

      Ditto on recommending the Glencairns. I have 2 sizes of the Loveramics Egg cups (4 each in different colours) in 150mL & 300mL. I’m seriously looking at the Orea sense glasses with the matching decanter. That or the Timemore Chuiwen Server Set with 2 Cups. I can’t decide which.

    At least for filter coffee, I believe that tea cups make for a great experience. You get the nose closer to the liquid, and the wider, thicker edge seems to accentuate the body of the coffee.

    I might be just crazy but... my top vote goes to glass.
    No matter the shape I feel that glass gives the most "clarity" in taste, I can get notes more easily.
    Polished ceramics\porcelain come in second, and all the rest after that.

  • @BensCoffeeRants

    I never had problems with cups getting too hot with espresso, are people brewing their espresso at 100c? I don't pre-heat the cups though, I also like it better when the coffee has cooled. I think with larger shots it might heat up the cup more but for smaller shots which I usually do it doesn't seem to get that hot at all.
    The good thing about the weird shape of these cups is if you do pull a large shot and it makes the cup hot, the ledge on it looks like it would make it easy to hold from the top.

  • @mark-ge8dr
    @mark-ge8dr Před 9 měsíci

    Too hot to hold? Some cups have handles for that. Seriously though, I do prefer the thick ceramic cups used in most good coffee shops. I also use the Duralex Piccardie and Kurve glassware, and recommend those too.

    Most people are not coffee geeks and don't smell their coffee. None smell it while drinking it. Those of us that are coffee geeks/hobbyists/connoisseurs do for the most point check the aroma before sipping or drinking. However my favorite cups have not been brandy snifter types for myself. The shape and feel of a more traditional cup works better for myself though I have been eyeing a couple of the new trendy cups to play with. Thank you for the video.

    • @Belegnole
      @Belegnole Před 9 měsíci +1

      I guess I didn't express my thoughts clearly enough. But if you watch how someone using a brandy snifter uses the glass. You may see what I'm talking about. Unlike enthusiasts most people don't obsess over the experience of having a cup of coffee. Most people don't do many of the things coffee geeks do. Many who see my coffee setup think i should open a coffee shop. They generally dont care about the flavor profile. They just know they like a good cup of coffee.

    coffee should pay more attention to wine in terms of glass shape. to me, the most important thing is a VERY thin, unrounded rim (thin ceramic or cut glass) another thing is a bowl to trap armoma (and heat). not a lot of good options

    • @tommihommi1
      @tommihommi1 Před 9 měsíci

      coffee isn't quite like wine. For espresso, I tend to somewhat slurp instead of taking gulps, so the thickness of the rim doesn't matter at all.
      The way the aroma behaves is more like that of a spirit than of wine, at least while the coffee is hot.
      So the type of glass you use changes at what temperature range the aroma works best.

    • @KeithJCarberry1
      @KeithJCarberry1 Před 9 měsíci

      @@tommihommi1 I think if you look back at wine, they are also slurping and indeed the thin rim cut glass is the way to go. I've tested this with wine, coffee, beer and tea and thin rim is always better and more intensely flavorful, especially at the brighter end

    Yeah ceramics getting too hot is definitely a nuisance if you brew an AeroPress straight into a cup. Takes forever to cool down into a pleasant temperature.

    • @coreycannon4511
      @coreycannon4511 Před 9 měsíci +1

      I brew my Aeropress into a flat topped 1-cup glass measuring cup (I don’t have - yet -a proper coffee carafe) that’s slightly too small, forcing me to pour it off into a larger measuring cup that’s too wide to press into directly. From there into a ceramic cup for drinking. This “double transfer” cools the coffee enough to allow immediate imbibing.

    • @swashofc
      @swashofc Před 9 měsíci

      @@coreycannon4511 That works! That is also something people purposefully do in AeroPress championship recipes to cool the coffee down :D

    • @coreycannon4511
      @coreycannon4511 Před 9 měsíci +1

      @@swashofc yeah. In my case it’s necessitated by the fact I don’t have a proper carafe. I have 2 1-cup glass Pyrex measuring cups. One has a flat top and a relatively narrow opening which allows me to press an Aeropress into it without any problems. Other than the last 50-100mL end you submerging the bottom of the Aeropress. The other has a sloped top, so not ideal for pressing onto and the mouth is really too wide to securely hold the Aeropress. The cooler coffee was a nice unintended bonus.
