  • Easy and quick DIY project. The late spring and early summer is the best time to make willow whistles because then willow bark comes off easiest.

It’s important to do this in the spring when the bark is wet between the main part of the wood otherwise it’s too hard to loosen.

Well done sir! Almost exactly how my old man showed me to do it some forty years ago in Norway.
He stressed that you must allways make the mouthpiece in the thin end of the stick so that the bark wont crack when you pull it off.
I also carve just through the brown part in the center, makes a sligthly different tone I guess.
But yours worked fine also, so again; well done.

I think gramps got in more trouble for making it than i did blowing it. Now i try to buy the noiseiest toys i can find for my friends kids birthdays and always make sure they have new batteries in them.

All i know that best time to make these is srpring. The bark is easier to remowe. If it does not work blow harder. If still no luck adjust the air path or the depth of the hole in the wood or bark. Make sure that the hole in the bark has a clean cut. Good luck.

I am interested in learning to make woodwind instruments, my uncle is a luthier and interested in teaching me to build/repair guitars, but to make different styles of traditional block/transverse flutes and panflutes might be fun and could be a little sideline for us, if I could even sell them on fairly cheap it could be an earner, plus I'd love to learn more about these instruments in general as I love my woodwinds, particularly recorders and other traditional block flutes, lovely sounding instruments!
