Hey Elliot, it's honestly so lovely that you are making content on a regular basis once again. I love hearing your opinions and CZcams is a brighter place with you to watch. Thank you.
Your comment has made my day, Jeff. Thank you so much for the support!
I agree 100%!
I’m a big fan of you current upload schedule, Elliot! Glad to see you more active. Please bring back the World Cinema chats with your dad. Seeing your TV set up would be great, too!
Thanks Jake! I’ll have to recruit my Dad for more videos. I do plan to do some videos on TV setups on the future. I’m really hoping to upgrade my home setup soon. Cheers!
"Dog Soldiers" is on 4K?
What a time to be alive.
All really good picks Elliot although I would have placed Double Indemnity in the top five, possibly number one. One of the great 4K moments was an early scene where Fred MacMurray walked into Barbara Stanwyck's parlor and a blinding streak of light shining through the Venetian blinds. The 4K showed every subtle shimmering variation of light through those blinds, a breathtaking moment for those who've seen it.
Hard Target on 4k also looked amazing! Love that 90's look on 4k and the action cinematography in that film is second to none. All analog, no cgi. One of the best pure action movies. Van Damme and John Woo in they're prime.
I also enjoyed Matrix Resurrections quite a bit! I'm so glad you included it here. I liked how it wasn't what we were expecting and I like how it's an epilogue, not a climax. The ending of Revolutions is still the biggest event in the series and it had real effects on the world. It didn't feel like "we need to blow up yet another death star." And yeah, it looks and sounds great on 4k.
Thank you for the tips!
Thank you for your review 👍🏽
Thank you for the content! Great videos! Awesome recommendations and insights!
Hey Elliot, thank you for your posts. I really appreciate you thoughts on cinema. You have introduced my to some interesting films and I am a lifelong, hardcore film buff. Also thanks for the heads up about the Hitchcock collection being on sale, I just snapped it up. I’ve only seen Family Plot ones, In the theatre when it came out, I loved it.
So glad your there, keep up the great work.
Hello Martin! Thank you so much for the lovely message. The support means a lot to me. Enjoy the Hitchcock set!
Elliot this is such a wonderful list! Awesome picks. I’ll have to check out some of the classics especially Hitchcock but the one that really blew me away that has always been a favorite of mine (huge western fan) was The Proposition. Holy smokes did that look incredible!
Great list Elliot maybe I would also add The Draughtsman Contract another BFI classic..
Hi Terry! Sadly BFI didn’t end up doing The Draughtman’s Contract on 4K UHD so it wouldn’t qualify - they just did the standard blu ray
22!?! That's an incredible list of discs, pal. Great choices and here's to no money in my wallet!
Thanks so much pal :)
Thanks for this list. Im going to check out Shadow of a Doubt because of this video!
I’m glad I could help. The film looks amazing on 4K!
Great top list! Greetings from Mexico 👍🏼😉
Thanks so much for watching!
Brilliant review and list of films.
I have bought 24 of these - I need to get the Driver to complete your 4K list. 2
Amazing video 😍
Thanks so much my friend!
I enjoy a grand total of 3 films on this list and already own 2 of them on 4K. 🤣
But that's ok. Great video. Glad you found so many films you enjoy on 4K.
I watched Pulp Fiction for the first time on the 4k disc. Was a great experience and it looks like a movie that was recently made!
Good list. On Matrix Revolutions, it was a weird experience watching it in theaters because it made no secret of its own contempt for its existence. I knew nothing about the film going in and paid no attention to what happened behind the scenes, but they pretty much lay it out in the film itself. It was a sequel that they didn't want to make but felt blackmailed into doing so. It made it a weird viewing experience and a year later I still don't quite know how I feel about it. It was interesting to watch, but I didn't love it either. I'm not even sure I liked it - I just enjoyed the novelty of watching it deconstruct its own existence.
Well said, and cheers for watching!
A surprising but useful number one, I was just going to stick to volume 1 but I’m far more likely to pick up this set when the price goes down to amount I got volume 1 in a year or so
Yeah definitely recommended when it reaches the right price
Drive is definitely my top pick very impressed
It’s a brilliant release. Cheers for watching!
Thanks for the Matrix 4 love.
My pleasure! Thanks for watching
Hey Elliot, great video as always!
I'm curious if you've checked out any of Vinegar Syndrome's catalogue, specifically their 4Ks. I'm not sure if they match your taste in film, but their 4K restorations of older and more obscure films are incredible.
I'd love to hear your opinion on some of their releases in the future!
Hey! I haven’t been able to check out any VS releases yet but I really want to! It’s just out of my budget currently to explore their label sadly . Hopefully one day I get the chance to start experiencing their great discs :)
@@ElliotCoen Thanks Elliot, I hope to see a Vinegar Syndrome review from you in the future. Out of curiosity, are there any of their releases in particular that you're interested in?
Thanks Elliot!
My pleasure, thanks for watching!
Nice top 22 Elliott! Totally agree re the Matrix sequel. I enjoyed it and think it'll grow on me with rewatching. And the picture as you say is outstanding!
Cheers Jeremy!
Oooooh, a trick list capper! I would have argued that “The Godfather Trilogy”, hands down, ranked at #1, but I do love me some Hitchcock, and especially a BOXED set so... well done!
Thanks so much for watching :)
From this list I own the Witch (new release) and Dune, they are so good. I rented Dog Sodiers on Amazon Prime but tbh it wasn't really for me. My "want to pick up" list is The Batman, the Tarantino movies and The Godfather. I think this is a good list.
Hey that’s fair enough! Dog Soldiers won’t be for everyone. Enjoy those other films when you do get the 4K discs! Cheers
In terms of 4K PQ...
1. Reservoir Dogs.
2. Pulp Fiction.
3. Ambulance (man, those drone shots are unbelievable).
4. The Outfit.
5. The Green Mile.
6. The Northman.
7. Hurt Locker.
8. Bullet Train.
9. The Proposition.
10. Get Carter.
Really want The VVitch but catching up with 2022 releases first.
Elvis 4K is on the to buy list.
It would've been good to see a few animated movies mentioned somwwhere on the list. I've been curious as to how beneficial 4k technology would be for animation, be it Disney/Pixar works, stop-motion (I've heard very good things about Coraline's 4k release) and even more traditional-style works and beyond.
That aside, this is a good list.
I'll be glad when everyone forgets Top Gun 2- such a shallow experience.
Would you say 2022 shot the format forward further than several (if not all) previous years put together?
Also surprised to not see "Everything Everywhere All at Once" here. I saw it 20 times in cinemas and the 4K disc is reference quality. Phenomenal presentation with some really great bonus features + one of the all-time great director commentaries.
Think there is a lot of divided opinion on Everything Everywhere All at Once. I watched it once and thought it was a snooze fest.
@@MrMattyG And what relevance does that have to the quality of its UHD release?
Hey Elliot, another wonderful video. Like others I'd add that it's so nice to have you back posting regularly. Shadow of a Doubt was Hitchcock's personal favorite film. Agree with your shout out for Kino Lorber, they have become the no.1 boutique 4K label. It was indeed, a great 2022 for us collectors and 2023 has already received a whole series of wonderful release announcements. Thanks!
Thanks so much as always, Rob! I’m very much looking forward to what 2023 holds for us film lovers :)
I got all these hitchcock movies exept Family Plot on the Black Friday sale here for about £8.70 each. No box, but having the first box I know that flimsy quality of it. No nedd for it. The movies I want though!
Have to grt that western from BFI. The box itself looks awesome!
Cheers! Thanks for a good channel with honest opinions!👍
Loving your videos man keep them coming! Only discovered this channel last night when looking into multi region players. I have been watching loads of your videos! Top quality with top reviews. I have to ask though have you seen the films and reviewed the "Underworld limited Edition 5 movie collection" in 4K? If not would love a review on that!! Though i have been hearing mixed things like one of the special feature blu-ray discs being region locked when the entire package is meant to be region free. Would love if you could either do a full video on this or if you can clarify if this product Underworld 5 Movie Collection on 4K UltraHD is in fact entirety region free?
Hey thanks for the kind words and for watching my videos! I’ve not had a chance to check out the 4K Underworld set unfortunately- hopefully I will someday. Sorry I can’t be of help there! Cheers
Love your channel Elliot ... what tv are you watching these movies for review? Was there ever an equipment video you made?
Thank you so much! I’m currently watching on an LG OLED B65 model. Showing its age slightly but still packs a great OLED image. I’m crossing my fingers I can afford to upgrade my TV this year to one of the newer models
As a Vermonter who loves Hitchcock, it must be said, The Trouble with Harry is not a worthy movie. Thanks for the nice arthouse/cineplex spread.
BFI put out The Seventh Seal in late 2021 which I own, just a minor correction to when you said they entered the 4K game in 2022.
Very true, that release completely slipped my mind (even though it’s right there on my shelf!) 😅
I hope that the next Hitchcock volume 3 set includes...
North By Northwest, Frenzy, Rope, The Man Who Knew to Much (1958).
It won’t have North By Northwest sadly - it’s not a Universal owned film as far as I’m aware
I picked up the 4K of Matrix Resurrections for £9.99 recently. Still not seen the film but after your recommendation I'll bump it up the list.
Oh nice, that’s a good price!
Prepare for disappointment 😂
Some nice choices there. I have a fair few of those but I'm still yet to get that second Hitchcock 4k set (I have the first volume) but that's definitely high on my list. I didn't know about The Trial ok 4k but I have now added that to my wishlist.
I wasn't able to get too many Kino Lorber 4ks but I did pick up the 4k Dollars Trilogy, Escape From Alcatraz, In The Heat of The Night and The Apartment in. 4k. I can't remember if the latter 2 came out in 2022 but I'm pretty sure that they did.
I thought the Batman was very very good but perhaps it's the product of my age and nostalgia but I still prefer the 2 Tin Burton films with Michael Keaton. However The Batman and Nolan / Bale films are all amazing in their own right so it's very hard to compare them all as they all bring their own unique touches and they are all enjoyable.
Matrix Resurrections fucking rules. Definitely way better than the other two sequels.
Oh nice! Amen to that
how did I not know about any of these releases
There should be plenty for you to explore here then :)
How do you know if you’re getting the 2022 The Witch? I can only find one version on Amazon and it doesn’t have the release of the actual disc itself.
It will be the Second Sight Films edition which is a UK release. Depending where you buy it online it should show you the release date as 2022. Cheers!
@@ElliotCoen thanks. I just ordered from a sight that sells UK - got Elephant Man, Seventh Seal, Drive, Proposition, and a couple others. Your recommendations have been great. They didn’t have The Witch and it looks like Amazon must not sell it. I’ll hope to find it later down the line. Thanks!
Is the Double Indemnity release a 4K? One of the Amazon reviews seems to indicate that the 4K disc is only included in the US release?
Yes the 4K is only available on the US release unfortunately. That’s the release I have. Cheers!
@@ElliotCoen ah, great, thanks! Just watching your Hitchcock video (new to the channel!). Fascinating how much I share your opinion on his films, and good to see The Lady Vanishes getting a mention.. a wonderful Hitch film!
I don't go all out on steelbooks or slipcovers unless they aren't a pain in the ass to attain but what made you stop buying steelbooks?
Interesting list. No Lawrence of Arabia or It's a Wonderful Life?
I have these, but haven't got around to watching them as yet, so have no idea how good they look.
Neither came out in 2022 but they are great discs!
@@ElliotCoen Ah, right. I forgot Lawrence of Arabia came out previously as part of a collection and well, I have no excuse for It's a Wonderful Life other than a brain glitch? It's Friday... lol
I agree with many of the picks, not the order though.
I have re watched Dune four times already, I have seen the syfy mini series multiple times and the David Lynch version both his cut and the Alan smithee TV versions.
For me Dune would be top 5 while the new Matrix I wouldn't make my list.
I imagine you’re very excited for Dune part 2 to arrive as well then? :)
@@ElliotCoen Yes very much so, I loved the books that they are based upon read them as a teenager.
Let’s see what comes out in 2023 and compare it to your 2022 top 22. 🤔👍
Can Casablanca and Singin' in the Rain be any better than the Blu-Ray I already have?
Yeah absolutely! Your mileage may vary though
Interesting that you rate The Batman so highly. For me I really couldn’t stand it. I’d be interested on your thoughts on the two Tim Burton films as I enjoy them the most. For a more modern Batman it’d be Joker for sure but I enjoyed The Dark Knight mainly due to the wonderful Heath Ledger (not really a Christopher Nolan fan).
citizen kane? now im worried and have to watch a review on it
My problem with Second Sight limited editions is that are soooo big are monsters, Import that things is expensive. Arrows limited editions are more compact.
Very true, they can be heavy!
@@ElliotCoen also they don't ship to USA, anyway, I'll try to buy the standard editions, I just have 3 Limited but I'm tired to overpay for those.
Could you not have ordered pulp fiction online instead of the steelbook ?
I could have but I had planned to watch the film that evening so wanted the disc there and then
@@ElliotCoen fair enough.👍
The best Batman was “ Lego Batman” end of story.
Matrix Resurrections! 💚
Nice to see the matrix resurrections included here. I also really liked this and was surprised that it wasn’t included in many top 10 lists for last year. Especially when they usually mention that the lists are for picture/audio only!
You were going well until ….” Matrix …….”
Then it went REALLY well :)
I did not care for The Godfather, it insists upon itself
Drive being responsible for getting a generation of people hooked on cinema is an extremely depressing thought
Hey, it was one of the first movies that got me into cinema and look at me now! 😅
Hate the batman singing in the rain reservoir dog raging bull double indemnity matrix resurrection police story you missed To kill a mocking bird and jaws
Sorry to hear that you hate all of those! Jaws didn’t come out on 4K in 2022 but it did make my best of year list previously. Cheers!
Top Gun: Maverick, Star Trek: Motion Picture or Godfather part 2 all day (the IMAX sequences on top gun is the best picture 4K I’ve seen. As for The Matrix Resurrections - I consider myself a master fan of the original. Decent sequel with insane sequences in Reloaded and poor finale (the Burly Brawl saved it) in Revolutions.
Resurrections was woke, unimaginative, lazy, visually awful and most of all - a poor attempt at a Matrix film. It felt more like a knock-off ! No bullet-time, no imaginative fight sequences, poor cinematography and a terrible score. And to top it all off… It went full retard and decided to go META - in which these sequences made zero sense (the footage of the original movie in reload sequence was completely ridiculous) and they never explained anything - the Agents posed no threat, use of mobile phones was unimaginative… scripts was CW level…
Anyway - good list.
The Batman 2022 is garbage compared to the previous movies. Woke BS.
What’s woke about it?
1080p trash!!!!!!!!!!!! 4k trash im staying with dvd its from the 90s 4k garbage
Wonderful list! Thank you! I'm still working on my top 4K of 2022 video! (If you need someone in the US to mail you Kino Lorber discs, I'd be more than willing! (My email is in my channel description))
That’s very kind of you, my friend. I may have to take you up on the offer. I’ll be in touch :)
@@ElliotCoen I did it! I got my Top 10 4K 2022 video uploaded! And seriously, email me if you want someone to mail you any US release movies. I have Barnes and Noble, Best Buy and all the things close by. I'm also able to order from sites to my address then mail them to you. Too easy. Anyway, no pressure, just want you to know I'd love to help. Let me know if you check out my top 10!
DEFINITELY not the best Batman. Nolan's Batman is miles ahead of all of them, and although not my style, Burton's is at least fun to watch.
