My Analog Video Glitch / Resolume VJ Rig Rundown (2022) [old]

  • I have been using this VJ setup for all of 2022, and have gotten to this point after experimenting with different variations of it in all my shows in prior years. It is basically a combination of digital and analog video effects using both Resolume VJ Software and an analog video hardware effects chain (featuring video mixers and circuit bent enhancers). Further below are links and timestamps to parts of the video explaining different aspects of the rig.
It is recommended that you not only watch this entire video, but also a video or more from my "YOVOZOL Live Visuals IRL" playlist, which contains 57 excerpts and counting from shows I've done since the start of 2019: • YOVOZOL Live Visuals IRL
    00:00 INTRO
02:20 PART 1 - Projector, Laptop, Resolume, & MIDI Controllers
As of writing, I use an Optoma WU515 DLP projector to throw my images onstage, a Dell XPS 17 9700 to run Resolume (and to edit/render all my videos), and Resolume Avenue 7. To control effect parameters in Resolume during the show, I use both an Akai MIDIMIX and an Akai FIRE.
05:40 PART 2 - THE BIG SECRET (the overall signal flow)
Through the use of an "invisible layer" I am able to send visuals to my analog effects chain and bring the result back into Resolume and the final Composition's output.
    07:27 PART 2.5 - The Upscaler
Because so many of you ask: docs.google.com/document/d/1f...
08:04 PART 3 - The Analog Video Effects Chain
Featuring a TV One Universal Scaler, Sima SFX-9 Video Mixer, Roland/Edirol V-8 Mixer, JVC JX-C7 Color Corrector, BPMC Fluxus, Coolpics.biz Linearocitor, Archer Super Video Processor, and a Prime Image TBC/Freeze II. There is more hardware I own but I don't normally use for VJing, instead I use them for music videos when I need to.
    13:23 PART 4 - The Top Layer
With Resolume you can overlay and blend anything on top of your analog video capture. You can bring any video source into the composition, even an iPad screen. The possibilies are endless.

Yo, feedback video loops can be great ! We (my friend(s) and I used to do this all the time), maybe not with this new tech, but a couple or 3-4 monitors with a RF-loop turning a cam into that 3d field back in the early 90s. I still love that effect, it just seems so raw.

I recently got a Retrotink 5x to try out as an upscaler (was using cheap amazon ones before). I wasn't too sure if the Retrotink or OSSC might offer some benefit over a standard upscaler. After getting it and playing with it for a bit the Retrotink is amazing for this type of stuff. It has a triple frame buffer capture mode that can handle really strong glitches without losing signal without using any TBC in between, and when it does lose signal it snaps back and recovers faster than any other device like this that I've seen. You can also choose the color of the no signal background when you inevitably push it too far, and being able to set it to solid black is such a nice change from all the devices that give you the BSOD. Not only that but it has a ton of different options for how it handles input sources so you can tweak it to any input you might have. It also has a bunch of built in post processing generators to simulate scanlines, various aperture grilles and shadowmasks, as well as an emulated CRT and old LCD mode.
It's $300 though, so it's not a cheap option but I can't believe I didn't get something like this earlier.

super cool and inspiring video. been messing around with fluid simulation on ipad as well but just capturing the videos in ipad and editing them to loops, or plugging it to video mixer with a feedback loop and capturing that to resolume. analog feedback even without any special effects seems to make wonders to some material and also never underestimate the possible glitches you may get from a loose or broken analog video cable ;)
although would not recommened using shitty cables for shows, just maybe for recording material for later use

Great video, very impressive. I stumbled onto some crazy video feedback back in the early 90s that really blew my mind. Totally aboriginal crawling cellular feedback rolling in a circle. I know other people have made this stuff, but I still think my stuff is unique. I have footage of it, but I've tried to recreate it, but found it was specific to a video cam brand as well as a TV brand. Honestly, I think the coolest more organic feedback generated was pre Hi-8 cameras and digital tvs. I used to use film, slide and video projectors in unison at night clubs.
I still think analog projectors are a critical part of the content creation process but there's a lot of directions to take all this stuff. I'm also big into old computer screensavers and have kept some old machines specifically to generate them. I'm also releasing music (band, not just EDM) this year, so maybe we'll run into each other sometime. I'll ship over my Twitch channel when I start rolling, hopefully soon.
