The Chinese SKS, AKA the Type 56 "Semi" Carbine is an iconic participant of conflicts in Vietnam, and a significantly armed the Chinese PLA.
In North America, it has often been hailed as a "more accurate" host for the 7.62x39 cartridge, but how does our specimen reflect that?
**Take note that this is ONE specimen of many, we invite you to film response videos, hopefully with 9-10 shot groups of your SKS to see if we draw from a larger sample size! **
A special thanks to Brandon from The Gun Room in the Woodlands Texas for loaning us this specimen. Also thanks to Mr. Phuc Long from Firepower United.... for everything.

I own the same exact model in this video, the one with the pole bayonet which I believe was the civilian model. Was imported into Canada many years ago and bought brand new by the person I purchased it from. It has an extremely tight stock where only the rear portion of the receiver will lift out some when I disassemble it to that step, but the front is so tight that I'm worried it might affect the harmonics/accuracy of my rifle if I force it too much. Does anyone know if tight tolerances are attributing to some rifles being more accurate than others? I've seen many that are very loose and have some form of play in the fit.

The AK is actually known as the Type 56 submachine gun as neither the Soviets nor Chinese made too much fuss about the difference between a smg and assault rifle.

I prefer the SKS over the mini 14. -Henry
@@9HoleReviews I do as well. Mini 14's are civilian budget rifles and show it. SKS's are military specification rifles and show it, much more rugged.
Ive watched so many of these videos over the years....when its been awhile...the opening notes of the music, when Henry is goin up the stairs, gives me chills. I love this series!
Just about pissed myself laughing with that intro. Calvin in Vietnam gear and shades drinking Corona through a straw. Inspiring!
I know right. Loved the little lip smacky sounds he makes.
I was actually pretty impressed with my Yugo SKSâs accuracy that I used to own.
Indeed, Henry didn't bother to check the zero before testing and bummed me out. When I first got my Norinco SKS the zero was way off (8 low and 6 left), but once I got it squared away I've been very happy with it.
@@derekgriffith6600 For additional information, the general design of the SKS is 0.8in R50 at 100m with a margin of error there depending on build quality and tolerances of any specific rifle, which isn't particularly convertible to MOA because it counts hits in vertical string and horizontal cross sections. Either way, it's perfectly acceptable in a combat capacity with less than a full torso spread up to somewhere around 400-500m.
"Type56" refers to the year that each of the Soviet firearm designs was adopted by the Chinese: SKS, AK, and RPD were all adopted by the Chinese in 1956
yes, but the trio was originally soviet doctrine to begin with. They were designed as a family of weapons.

My grandpa bought a crate of these rifles years ago. The one he gave me was dead on accurate. Wish I had it now
You never get rid of Grandpa's rifle !
Honestly, the best I've ever seen out of an SKS is one I'd bought and spent the time trying to accurize. It was a Norinco SKS I paid about $300 for, spent maybe $300 more trying to get it up to par. Using Lapua Brass and shooting from the prone free handed I could get 1 1/4 MOA at best. I did put it on a bench and vise once to see just how tight it would go, never went below 1 MOA.
But that was an SKS I had put a lot of work into and used top quality ammo. When I used Steel cased stuff like that Barnual you used, I was getting maybe 2 3/4 MOA prone free handed. Worst group I ever saw was 3 3/4. But before I did that work to it, with the Lapua it was a solid 2 to 2 1/2 MOA gun. With steel, like 3-5 depending on brand and such. But I've seen other SKS examples that were easily 4-6 MOA with the same stuff. There's just so much variances in one SKS from the next it's hard to compare sometimes but what you shot and showed was pretty reflective of MOST SKS rifles I've seen grouped or shot myself. They almost all string vertically, whether or not they do to the right, left, or stay centered is up to the SKS and ammo usually.
I'm sure somebody will be saying how it's not fair because it's not a Russian SKS or anything... But that's a load of crap. I've shot more than a few Russian SKS and while if they are in good shape they DO tend to shoot a bit nicer than the Chinese ones, most Russians are not in tip top shape and shoot about the same. Romanian SKS rifles are built to the same standard as Russian ones usually but never seem to get that level of praise. Though some of those Yugo SKS rifles have had some of the best groups I've seen. I think that extra weight at the front with the grenade launcher devices is why. One of the things I like but also dislike as they are heavier than most other SKS's.
I think a series of comparing SKS to AK rifles would be interesting even if I've seen some of that stuff a thousand times or more.
I had a Chinese export sks that I swear was at best a 10 moa rifle, it was junk. The military version is actually pretty nice but those exports are crap.
@@kylec.6818 Truth is most SKS rifles are 5-6 MOA guns. People just often like to attribute qualities and traits to them they simply don't have. I have seen some really bad examples like what you mentioned, I believe it was shooting 8 MOA with typical steel cased stuff.
I don't feel that's the norm for them however.
@@Predalien195 I had a friend with a Russian SKS that was a tack driver.
@@kylec.6818 I've seen a handful of examples that shoot tighter than most SKS rifles. I recall when a friend of mine bought a Russian and I got a Norinco the same day, my Norinco was shooting about 4 MOA with steel and about 2 3/4 with brass. And his was shooting about 6 MOA with steel and 4 MOA with brass.
I find some are just built good and others not so much. I ended up doing an accurizing job on the gun, rebedding the stock and a trigger and action job. Got it down to shooting 1 1/4 MOA with Lapua Brass free handed from the prone and around 3 1/2 MOA with steel.
You forgot to extend the bayonet. Everyone knows the SKS is zero'd at the factory with the bayonet extended. Duh.

Indeed, my Type56 is a true beater gun I've taken to the brush multiple times and I'd trust my life on it. The consistency and accuracy seen in the video is pretty much on par with what I expected. Lately, I've started to favor my Type81 for outings, though. It's shaping up to be my runner-up with very little margin. It's got some disadvantage, like it's being shown in the video (it's basically a fancy-ish looking AK, only the safety and the BHO differs), but I got myself 10-round mags. The Type81 shoots so softly even compared to the SKS;:it's also short-stroke operated but the bolt has a lot more space to travel and doesn't noticeably kick back at all, with all the 'jerk' being on the BCG/bolt slamming back into battery.
I'd love to see a vid by 9HR on it.

Some note on my personal experience (an old man's) you may find interesting: 1. Most of the Vietnam variant SKS's had blade bayonets and milled trigger guards. I've shot a lot of them back when. Even beat up and worn out, they were accurate and about 2.5 minutes of angle at 100 yards. 2. When I left the Army in 1988, I bought a SKS variant sold by Norinco. It had a cuneiform bayonet, a wooden handguard/gas block cover and a stamped steel trigger guard. Less than six months later, I bought a Polytech milled receiver AK-47S. I also had a case or two of the Chinese 7.62 X 39 I bought at the same time. It was military surplus, came in a wooden case with two spam cans on stripper clips wrapped in paper, was ball ammo and the best 7.62 X 39 ammo I've shot in over 30 years of shooting. It was accurate. 3. One day at a small 100 yard range (measured) near my home, I shot both the SKS and the AK-47S milled receiver rifles using the Chinese surplus ammo. Results of ten 10-round groups: SKS averaged 2.5 MOA consistently, no vertical stringing. AK-47S averaged 3.5 MOA consistently, no vertical stringing. 4. Checking with other friends who could shoot, I found this was pretty consistent results from their rifles of the time (Several SKS and AK/AKS variants. Later on, there were other variants to show up and I'm not sure if they were commercial or later military surplus. It was hard to tell and no one but the Chinese arsenals can probably answer this question. Only regret: I wish I had bought a pallet of that ammo. It was going for 50 bucks a tin or 100 a case, cheapest ammo around. Comparatively, the ammo made in the former Soviet Union is junk. Just my .02, Dave

its not a bench rest gun but you can hit clay pigeons out to 300m if the barrel is still in good condition. That is a target rifle to me. The chinese sks was not sighted in for barnauls higher loaded 7.62x39mm it has about 100 FPS extra and the point of impact is off. It was sighted in for the type 56 manufactured ammo in china which have a steel core and longer bullets

My Chinese SKS also strings groups vertically. Itâd be interesting to alter certain variables such as, bayonet, ammo, etc to see if I can identify the cause.
An SKS was the first center fire rifle I ever owned. I paid about $70 for it. Plus, you could get those big olive drab tins of ammo for it for less than that. I shot a large bunch of ammo thru it, then traded it off. Never should've done it.

Iâve always kinda thought my AK shoots better than my SKS but couldnât justify it. This videos confirms that for me.
There's an indoor range in San Antonio that will let you rent out a full-auto RPD in their range. Not sure if they'd let you test it like your guns, but it's definitely one way to try out a belt-fed RPD.
My dad bought one of these back in late 1980's. His buddy had a crate of them and the 7.62 ammo. He also bought a wooden "box" with 2 sealed metal cans of this ammo. I dont think he paid much more than $400.00 for all of this. Nothing has been opened or fired. I have a different Czech model with an aftermarket stock. Its very reliable and, with iron sights, accurate within my eye's abilities.

I bought some 7.62x39 for my AK a while back. Now I know what those 10 round clips were for. Thanks.
You can load an AK mag with those, you know!?
Amazing really for an SKS - Henry is a phenomenal shooter. He must have great vision.
Been there, done that. The SKS has the cold bore accuracy level over the AK. both guns shoot pattern after the 3-5 rounds as the barrel warms up and you need to buy better ammo!
I wondered about that but I've never seen anybody show their work and demonstrate it. When I was a youth SKSs were cheap and plentiful but I didn't like them.
Nothing wrong with the ammo.
The ammo was fine. If you paid attention he said they tested that same ammo minutes apart on the AKM on the day after this video and then much later both were tested again. (assuming with a cold barrel both times). So no. It's definitely the rifle. Mine shoots the same with "minute of man" accuracy. Without a spotter you're not likely to easily make 300 meter shots at least not without a lot of adjustment. But people always get mad when I say that the SKS is a 200 meter rifle at best. I'm sure here and there a few people have a "sweet" example where the stars aligned on the day theirs was produced, but in general, the Type 96 models at least, are generally not particularly accurate rifles even if they look like they should be accurate. I love mine and will never sell mine as its a great hog gun, is super reliable, and very fun to shoot. But people need to stop pretending that it's some kind of sniper rifle or something just because it has a long barrel. It's just a simple and crude mass produced WWII style battle rifle designed to be reliable, easy to maintain, and easy to operate as it was meant for conscripts. It's lack of accuracy is probably one of many reasons why the AK-47 replaced it.
@@wigon I've shot steel case ammo and I've shot better quality brass boxer primed from the same gun at the same time and conditions, the better ammo shot smaller groups. 20 years ago I was lucky enough to snag 200 rounds of 7.62x39 Lapua Match ammo for the princely sum of $22. It shot first 3 rounds touching at 100 yards, first 5 inside 1.5 inches and the whole magazine into 2" group. No steel cased ammo I've shot in any of my SKS's(owned 3, still have 2) has ever got close to the Lapua Match in consistency. I reload these cases till this day with Reloder 7, CCI 220 primers and 123 Hornady FMJ bullets. The FMJ bullets are more accurate than HP bullets through my rifles. 400 yards with 6x scope on a Choate Machine Tool mount is boringly easy to hit. I use the Tech Sight TS200 sight on my Paratrooper model with a Williams Fire sight front post. Huge improvement over the stock sights. If I'm shooting feral hog for eating, I load 160 cast lead bullets loaded to 1500 fps. BTW I've been shooting SKS's since the started importing them some 30 years ago. I shot some extremely accurate SKS/AKMs and then again I shot quite a few that basically had sewer pipes for barrels. Some knock the 7.62x39mm for various reasons, especially the .300 black out fan boys.
Its not a bad round its just not a great one. I would rather have a .300BLK for the better BC but 30 Soviet is so easy to find most of the time why not shoot it.

Those real strange random patterning makes me wonder about ammo, but who knows maybe It's got bad thermal issues. Cool to see someone put the SKS through the paces.
the T56 AK was shot minutes after with the same ammo and does not exhibit the stringing pattern.
@@9HoleReviews agreed, it seems ammo isn't likely. Maybe poor harmonics. Hard to tell since it seems intermittent. Then again, most military rifles of WWII era(design in this case) were not mandated to be near as accurate as many suspect. So it may be the design was good enough, just not perfect. Oh well, still appreciate the effort you guys put into it.
I chalk it up to bad harmonics. Bayonet pinned on barrel, that wood stock in combination with the long stroke piston...
Barnaul 7.62x39 tends to be pretty good.
@@9HoleReviews vertical stringing, when not a heat issue, is usually due to the shooter not controlling movement at the stock end. And I read years ago that because of barrel harmonics, the bayonet should be extended when zeroing

2:17 Iâm glad Iâm not the only one that does that when they sip a beverage
Your comments about American shooters enjoying the traditional rifle layout and thinking it is more accurate has a lot of merit. I own a WASR-10, a SAM-7 side folder, a Czechpoint VZ-58, a Galil ACE and a Chinese SKS. Out of all the 7.62x39 rifles I own, the SKS is my favorite to shoot, itâs just a very pleasant shooting rifle.
Finally the long awaited video has arrived lmao
The first Chinese SKS's were made between 1953-1955 and were designated Type 53. They were direct copies of the Soviet model. My Son has one.

Firepower United come back daddy we love you long time
Hey..MORE VIDEO'S ASAP
I had a Bushnell 3x9x40 on my Russian Sks. Dropped quite a few large deer, one at 230 yards. 300 yards was its practical limit I would say, considering a responsible hit.
that's a gorgeous example, I remember when I lived in Texas I would take my Type 56 out to 300 easy
@Lilac Tortoise Only if you arent good enough.
I clicked on this and listened to it while knocking out some customer service emails for work. Pop back over and totally expected an older white British guy with a safari jacket out at the range. Maybe a monocle. Did not expect this guy.
Love how the SKS is hard to find in the US - go to any gun store in Canada to grab a crate of them haha.
I hv a type 56 sks I inherited and don't know what kind it is ...can u help? I'm in Tx.. It looks just like the one ur using. Has Chinese Mark's and stock is well worn as maybe used in war. I hv a son named Calvin. Thanks so much for info.
back in the 90's they were a dime a dozen in the US, I got my chinese sks for... (HA I just looked in my records) $79 That's $147 in 2020bucks Damn good rifle.
@@cassandraspence810 www.yooperj.com/SKS.htm
that's ok. we can build and own an AR platform rifle for $500. haha
bro what there 300$ on classic firearms literally one of the biggest us firearms retailers
I picked one of these up a few years ago from an older gentleman's collection at the local shop and it had absolutely zero wear on the internal and external surfaces. I've put a few thousand rounds through it and it has a similar pattern. Great firearm and I enjoyed the video. Thanks for sharing.
Nice Intro, Cheer's Mate..đđ
just do as I did and run your bore/breach/muzzle with CLOVER compound to get groups really tight, is my go- to solution to smooth out that bore!
Greetings from South Africa guys, excellent video as always.
Will you by any chance be doing a video on the Tikka t3x tac a1 at some stage? I know that's very specific, I would just love to know your opinion on that setup. It's hailed as being a very competitive rifle even in a class of rifles 5 times as expensive. Is this possible or just hot air from fanboys?
I believe it was Ryan Cleckner who also had nothing but good praises for it...
Best regards from this side of the world. Keep doing what you're doing and stay safe
I think Bloke On The Range did a video on the Canadian Ranger version of it and I don't believe he was to impressed.
It's a good rifle, as all Tikkas are. That being said, I would recommend getting T3X Varmint and putting it in Cadex/MDT chassis. At least back when I was buying my T3X, Varmint had more caliber choices than TAC A1. This way I have it in 6.5x55, which is almost half the price of similar quality 6.5CM with similar ballistics. Ofc that only applies to where i live, I dunno what is the situation where you are, but ammo cost is important. The cheaper it is, the more you will be able to shoot. And with many modern rifles, the shooter is the limiting factor, so training is important.
The rifle+chassis cost me around the same as TAC A1 would.
Also, I highly recommend Accuracy International style bolt handle from Sterk for your Tikka. A small thing, but I love it.
As a teenager in the late 1980s over here in California, my dad and his good friend on a whim decided to buy Norinco SKS. Folding bayonet and everything. IIRC they were very cheap. I also remember they had bought these massive tin cans full of ammunition for them. We went to the range a lot with them, fun stuff to shoot with.
I wonder if you have adjusted the front sight on the SKS would it make a difference in the group shifting đ€
we did adjust the sights, but couldn't do it further as the drum was tight enough to break the tool.

Got it, must be an issue with the barrel. I have noticed that in such rifles the quality of the metal is not consistent all along the full length of the barrel and that does effect the accuracy no matter what you try to do
@@9HoleReviews if it doesnât sit right it will I had that issue now my sks shoots 1 moa
That SBR (13" barrel and 12th model?) with the C7 upper and Ops MB/Collar at the end of the vid is *slick*. I dig it.
Concerning the poor ergonomics of the Kalashnikov when shooting prone, please note that you are not just limited to the ubiquitous 30 rd banana magazines. 5 and 10 round mags are available that don't protrude much lower than the fixed SKS mag....
impeccable timing... i just ordered a grade 2 Type 56 #26 factory make from PSA last week.
I have a Yugoslavia sks, that has a rear rail for optics, also has a magazine not stripper clip. Its in Dallas if your willing to make a drive to pick it up im not currently in texas.
It is modified stock similar to tarpon style. Just need a sight and round cover. But the mount is there for it
I been asking for this review for years, I'm very happy
Can I order a chinaman toothbrushing wheels service on the store?
I'm all out of favors thanks to Mr. P.

@@9HoleReviews don't worry. Thanks for fast reply. Someday will it be a .22 lr video?
Chinaman is not the prefered nomenclature dude.
I have two 1967-1968 ish production Chi Com SKS rifles they are actually surprisingly accurate and do not show horizontal or vertical stringing. My range only goes to 300 yards but they are boringly accurate in my experience using wolf military classic 124 grain but I cant say what they would do past 300y because I have not had the opportunity to engage steel that far out with them. It looks like you have a much later production as the plastic upper handguard is installed. Always love the content from 9 Hole Reviews !
OFC THEY DO! It's a polymer production line, not a military PLA issued one!
my SKS has drifts for the front sight to adjust. It used to pull right as well, but you just gotta zero the sights to get them back on target
3 years old but I wish you could try this again with a "Public Security" Chinese SKS, which are rumored to be more accurate. The build quality is definitely better than run of the mill Chinese SKS's.
Wasn't it in soviet doctrine to hold a 6oclock low? I just thought I've heard that before when you mentioned it at the 500 yard target.
I personally own a Norinco, Yugo, Albanian and Russian SKS. Got them all back in the 'barrel o garbagerod' days. The 3 euro rifles all favor left and high, the chinese rifle favors high and right.
I posed this observation to a Russian buddy and his explanation was the rifling machinery used. Apparently, a large portion of eastern block countries were reissued seized german rifling equipment and the chinese just built their own, which led to less than optimal results.
How about a video on the Springfield 1903 rifle?
That's a good group for an SKS, I'm not gonna argue with it. If you get 3 moa or better with optics, I would be in disbelief even with a video.
Iâm sure NC Star has a proper mount and sight for this thing
NC Star the bane of everyone's existence. To call them garbage is an insult to garbage
I love the intro! For that sexy weapon, I would scrub all four tires with a tooth brush. That intro alone was worth a like, a sub and a bell ring. Plus, a thorough review of past videos.
I have a Norinco SKS,it has never failed me even after 1,000 rounds however I hate the trigger. There is a binding issue where I have to put pressure on one side or the other while depressing. Very frustrating, anyone have any ideas or suggestions?
@Michael Ned what do you think the chances of buying a complete trigger group dropping it in and working are ?
@Michael Ned thanks for the info!
Yeah... those SKS are damn good poor man AK! I love them and I believe theyâre the most underrated rifle out there, especially the Norinco 56ćŒ
