    Man that is a simple, fit and functional stove system. I really like it. That thought on the windscreen to have one solid side and one side with holes is great. Thanks for sharing Mark, great looking product!

    One cool way of lifting the windshield/potstand (Leo shows this on his YT channel) is to use your folding spoon in the bent position as pliers to grab the hot windshield. It works really well.

    Mark,
    another simmer ring idea I saw over at ksgonewild youtube channel in her "windy wild camp" video. Put a coin or two on top of the burner. She used what looks like two one inch coins and it seems to work.
    This looks like a good substitute for the Simple Theory Gear stoves

    Thanks for sharing, another good piece of kit.
    The burner will just blow out, saving heat damage to the cap, yet another bonus.
    A resealable bag(pouch) is a worth while addition, guards against leaking and evaporation.
    I have the 90 - 100 version, ideal, very pleased. Made, from a spoke, a long armed U, a 1 piece 2 armed pot stand, bent down ends.
    I might get the larger model too.
    No, I did not need the other one either.
    Thanks again.

    For an alternative to a simmer ring, try putting the cap of the burner underneath the burner which closes the gap between the top of the burner and the bottom of the pot. This chokes out the flame a little bit and slows the burn. I don't have that stove, but raising the burner/lowering the pot works well for me. Great video btw, thanks for making it

    How about a smaller solid ring to lay on the felt in the center and let the flame burn around the outside of the simmer ring? It might give better flame distribution on the pot also.

    I would love to use this with the Toaks Siphon instead of the X-Boil burner. But i´m afraid the gap from burner to pot would be too small with the Siphon.

    • @MarkYoungBushcraft
      @MarkYoungBushcraft  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Yes, the X-boil windscreen would not work well with the Siphon. Thanks for commenting

    • @DanceCommander
      @DanceCommander Před 8 měsíci

      @@MarkYoungBushcraft I mean - the Toaks Siphon is just 40mm in height and I found the pot gap sweet spot between fuel consumption, speed and soot formation is more around 25mm/1inch. So technically with shorter potclips which would make the pot sit a little bit higher it should still be usable. Of course if the pot sits higher there is less overlap between windshield and pot so maybe not as much wind protection.

  • @dag4321
    @dag4321 Před 9 měsíci +1

    For simmering I just use the stove's snuffer/cover and partially cover the stove. Crude but it does work and you can adjust the level of simmering.

    So I went to the site, and it seems it’s 85euros for something we could make with ease? For the simmer ring, did you try something opposite to a traditional ring? Like a disk that would sit in the middle, something like a flame spreader. This would allow plenty of air, and also keep a larger flame area to reduce the hotspot.
    Last thing is something I find frustrating about stove reviews. The stats you give are very useful to know efficiency, but no one that I’ve seen mentions the burn time capacity. Not just one ounce, but when it’s completely full, how long will it run. I’m not always only boiling 2 cups of water and that it. I want to know how long I can cook with it without worrying about the stove running out.

    • @MarkYoungBushcraft
      @MarkYoungBushcraft  Před 9 měsíci +3

      Good questions Jim. I have since considered different simmer rings designs and will experiment a bit with them. I will also do a full burn to see how much it will hold and how long it will run. Thanks for commenting

    • @imanuelgoldstein1518
      @imanuelgoldstein1518 Před 9 měsíci

      I can tell you that it's 12 to 15 minutes. Depending on environmental factors. Burn time that is.
      Regarding the price. It's not cheap but if you would buy a windshield, quality burner and stand. You talking about a few bucks more. And what you get is a solution that can be stored in your pot, is really hard to knock over and just works.

    G'day Mark, that should keep the ultralight mob happy at the very least ; ) Always good to see worthy products from a small enterprise too ....... and Leo's attitude is very refreshing.
    Like the safety aspect, (including the foil mat), and the tent peg idea also; a lotta folks, (understandably), discard those cheapie pegs, in favor of star picket type jobs ...... well there's a use for 'em, + they facilitate full diameter coverage.
    I do prefer a noisy fella though, since its an inherent indicator it's going, especially with blue flame in daylight.
    With the simmer ring; I wonder about ..........
    A. would one from another brand happen to fit ? and
    B. do you get any noticeable fuel saving in simmer mode ?
    And yep, I'm totally with ya mate, ........... time is of little importance out in the sticks ; ) Cheers Duke.

      @MarkYoungBushcraft  Před 9 měsíci

      Hi Duke. A Trangia simmer ring might fit but I was hoping for something ultralight and compact. Mostly, I am looking to lower the heat so as not to burn things like soup in the pot. Thanks for commenting

      @eyeofthetiger4184 Před 9 měsíci

      @@MarkYoungBushcraft Yep, no worries mate, what you've come up with is great, especially in the same ultralight "spirit" : )
      Just curious more than anything, since I've never owned an alcohol job, and fair to say, some folks just don't do handy.
      As far as fuel; if one wants to get really pedantic ...... as gram counters often do : ) tailoring meals to a simmer approach, compared to full blown cooking, for a given quatity of fuel, may well be a consideration, ...... perhaps calculus : ).......... I'd imagine.
      Btw; looking forward to the soup recipe you mentioned, sounds intriguing, tasty and nutritious.

    Hey Mark, I’m just wondering if you would actually have to elevate the burner in some way to maintain the 1.25” from the pot when using the system with a larger pot/pan that would sit on top and without the clips. As usual thanks for the awesome video

    • @MarkYoungBushcraft
      @MarkYoungBushcraft  Před 9 měsíci

      From my experience, because it is a wick stove, the pot gap has a larger range with the flame pattern staying very much the same. I would not worry about the extra distance in this case but you could place something under the burner to close the gap. Thanks for commenting

      Hi, I recommend to put the burner on the lid to get higher for using a frying pan. Please note: the X-Boil is good for using a frying pan on top (ham and eggs, ...) but not to boil liters of water on top of it.
