This 26-Year-Old Running For Congress Wants to be the AOC of Texas

- LAREDO, Texas - Rep. Henry Cuellar has represented Texas’ 28th Congressional District for 15 years. He’s a Democrat who is pro-gun, anti-abortion and a supporter of the recent border deal that split members of his own party. According to analysis from Five Thirty Eight, Cuellar has voted with President Trump more than almost any other Democrat.
This year, he’s up against a challenge from the left: 26-year-old immigration attorney Jessica Cisneros. Cisneros grew up in Laredo, and was practicing law in New York when she was recruited by Justice Democrats to run against Cuellar. That's the same group that backed Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who defeated longtime Democratic incumbent Joe Crowley who had held his seat for 20 years.

Decades ago social democracy and democratic socialism were very different things but now adays with a rise to progressive Democrats like Bernie Sanders who refer to themselves as Democratic Socialists (this is technically incorrect they're social Democrats), social democracy and democratic socialism are virtually synonymous. I think It's something to be decided on a case by case basis. AOC isn't much older and she's been fantastic in her position, imo. There are plenty of 26 year olds who very clearly wouldn't be fit, but I think there's also be plenty who are. Not to mention how much would be quickly learned on the job. The way I see it, at the very least, if she wins she deserves a chance. If the age / experience is as much of a problem as you imply, she won't be re-elected.

As a non American, I seriously don't understand why English is NOT spoken to or used as the primary language by your representatives to your voters. While 80% of the district is Hispanic, English is the official language of the USA. Do you see Spanish or Latin America representatives or any other non English speaking countries addressing their voters in English? They do it via their official language or native (to their country) languages.

Henry Cuellar is the author of TEXAS Grant a grant for all freshman college students. This grant is 2500$ a semester and in total it’s 20000$. This is what Henry has done for his people and the citizens of Texas.
Fine, but look at the critical issues. Does Cuellar support a $15 minimum wage? No. Does Cuellar support Medicare for All? No. Does Cuellar support the Green New Deal? No.
Can Cuellar be bought by big money interests? Yes, just look at his voting record.
Does Cuellar stand for anything? No. During the 115th congress he voted with Trump 68.8% of the time because his district voted overwhelmingly for Trump in 2016. During the 116th congress, he decided that it wasn't politically advantageous to be aligned with Trump, so he only voted with Trump 4.7% of the time. People vote for that guy cause they are conservative and they don't want change, most people down here are completely oblivious to the realities of what they can't see, and trapped in their minute bubble. They just don't have any exposure, they've never experienced life in the Midwest or deep South, and it distorts their perception. My wife hates Trump, but when we really start to question ourselves and talk about enacting liberal policies she won't budge, her views are very conservative, she's Hispanic, a valley native, and shares the exact same views as the majority of people who live in this district. Corruption down here is a part of daily life from the lowest levels all the way to the top, so in my opinion it doesn't matter who they elect that aspect will never change. That's the reason this place has seen zero growth, one of the poorest places in the country and the highest unemployment rate, but we retain hands down the hardest working people in the world, that's why everyone has to work out of town or state just to stay afloat. All the local businesses are just money laundering fronts for the cartels, everyone has a deep seeded subservient mentality to whites and money, and very greedy, just haven't figured out that by helping their neighbor they're really helping themselves, bring up a community instead of leaving everyone behind. Just look at all these thug mansions, people building a whopper of a three story house smack dab in the middle of a colonia where his neighbors don't even have indoor plumbing, really bro, why? And I'm not knocking anyone, hard-working family man with a full-time job shouldn't have to shit in an outhouse, but you'd be surprised how many people down here start off their day in that manner. People down here are scared and sadly things will never change.

@@dcmiguel7777 appreciate it, there's a long road ahead, hard to break a mentality that's a few centuries old, but how do you teach open mindedness? PBS has a sporadic broadcast and they completely got rid of NPR a few months ago, sadly out of towners seemed more upset about it than the locals.
The political world doesn't need another aoc. People leave socialism to come to our country. I didn't have access to healthcare i busted my butt in college working 3 jobs. Took 4 buses to get to my classes. Got a job to get benefits. 15 dollars an hour min wage will just cause increase in the cost of things and people will still struggle. Education and other services to help people bring able to provide from themselves. Helping each other so that it helps the system. Tired of all the fighting and pointing blame.
