  • The Kani tribes in different hamlets in Kanyakumari await patta for the land in their possession. Even as 16 years have passed after the implementation of the Forest Rights Act, 2006, the tribals are yet to receive their entitled land pattas. Continuous protests and requests have fallen on deaf ears. The community is denied building houses under different schemes of the government since they do not possess land pattas. The implementation of Tamil Nadu Private Forests Act and increased authority of the forest department have further ruined the lives of the Kani tribes. The promises made by the DMK government raised hopes, but are yet to fructify.
