Thanks for the comments Jeff: We have sold a lot of Pacific Fly Conrad Sculpins over the years. Certainly if you talked to Chad or any of our other guides who tie and fish Double Deceiver style flies, there would be nothing to homage to the original Great Lakes Double Deceivers.
But if we stuck this video up here as the definitive Great Lakes Deceiver I'm sure we would equally be deluged with those familiar with the original tie as doing it wrong. Certainly its tied differently from the commercial versions of the "Double Deceiver" we sell. So the question might equally be if its not tied to "spec" is it a true Great Lakes Deceiver.
So it was my editorial decision, in the text to refer to this as "Chad Johnson's tie" of a "Deceiver style articulated streamer" _ in that way reflected its origins in both the Great Lakes Double Deceiver and Lefty's original single hook version. Certainly there is a lot of acknowledgement and respect in our guys for the origins of these flies.
Which in part accounts for the name: rather than arrogantly say this is the Great Lakes Deceiver it was selected to reflect both its origins but that we weren't doing it quit right.

Straight shank worm hooks--love those style of hook for large patterns--Bass Pro makes a good one, not as sharp as Gami/Partridge/Ahrex but once I put a file to 'em they grab good. Much more affordable for me as well.
Damn, I'm literally only 1:32 minutes into the vid and the guy clamps down his tail feather stems to sit true and flush on the hook. That's a beautiful caliber of video to continue watching.
Thanks, Steve. It is a tough call whether to always stick to the original name of a fly pattern even though we all make minor changes based on tying preferences, tying skills, material availability, and our own sense of what will work on our home waters. Maybe I am a little over-sensitive to it, but I have seen lots of copies of the Conrad Sculpin with extra "arseholes 'n' eyeballs" renamed, showing no respect for the original design. On one hand, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. On the other hand... well, we can debate that over a bottle of tequila:-) The main thing that matters to me is that my flyfishing brethren hook lots of big, fat, strong predatory fish. If my fly helps with that then I'm a happy man. I love seeing a picture of some grinning angler holding a giant {INSERT FISH SPECIES HERE} with a Conrad Sculpin hanging out of its chops. I appreciate your thoughtful answer on a topic that has been discussed for many years and will continue to generate discussion for many more. Hope to see you sometime this Winter. Jeff Conrad

great looking fly. One question:
won't tying the led on the underside of the front hook cause the fly to float hook point down/yellow side up? or does the deer hair counter that the weight?

That fly has been called a "Great Lakes Jointed Deceiver" or "Great Lakes Double Deceiver" for many years now. Nice tie job, but fly tiers perhaps shouldn't make one or two tiny changes to someone else's fly pattern and then name it after themselves.
Crappy music screws with the concentration of learning how to tie the fly, which is what this video should be about.....with explanation!
