Cesar.. I was a skeptic but you have just saved me a huge headache!! My recently adopted lab/mastiff started gobbling her food to the point of concern when I first got her, but over the course of 2 months she had become incredibly picky, often not eating the whole day. I've tried switching kibble, adding toppers (and doubling the amount) which worked for a short time, and just could not get her to eat. I thought I was giving too many treats but wasn't sure how to train basic obedience without it. My SO even resorted to pretending to eat her food and that worked once or twice. I tried your method of holding the bowl, getting that prolonged eye contact and putting the bowl down with my hand still on it, and she just ate her first bowl of completely plain kibble in weeks!! I cannot believe calm confidence and connection during feeding have been the missing ingredients all this time. Thank you so much

@@yyssa Update after a year: no more issues feeding, but what it's really about is giving the food "value". Calm confidence and connection are part of that, but if you have no structure, aka letting them free feed all day, giving table scraps/treats etc, the dog will revert to being picky. Do NOT let them train you into sweetening the deal (mixing in wet food, etc.), the behaviour will only get worse. Giving them the food for 5-15 mins while i go do something else, then taking it away if they walk away by the end of that time is how i got them to be excited about every meal now. They now understand food is a valuable, limited-time opportunity. Treats/scraps etc only available if they've finished their food. May take a few weeks, and the pup might have a few hungry nights (it won't hurt them), but totally worth it! Good luck to all new owners struggling with this!

It's like he's hungry but I didn't have the right energy in feeding him (I had walked him first before but he still didn't eat- it was a more begging him to eat energy because deep down I still felt worried and sad about what he went through) - this time I walked him first then tried the holding the bowl and keeping that lasting eye contact with him and creating a sense of gentle gratitude within my own self - and BOOM - it was a 180 and he ate every last crumb in one go! Thank you and may your lessons and spirit ring loud and clear throughout the world. ✨💗

OMG: “You’re pretty much barking with the dog”. This is me exactly! I adopted my pit bull 2.5 years ago when he was two. He never barked at all. I’ve taken him to the dog run almost every night since I got him, then about 6 moths ago he started a habit he picked up from other dogs: he now barks at anything (and often at nothing at all) that’s happening outside the dog run when he’s inside. He totally ignores all the dogs in the run with him. He barks at people passing the run, he barks at dogs approaching the run, but if they come in he ignores them. Some nights it’s been pretty cold so there’s been very little activity in the park, but he barks more the emptier the park is! At first I didn’t mind hearing his voice and I figured who cares if he barks in the dog run, but now it bugs me, especially since he’s a pit bull and ppl might think he’s aggressive. Funny thing is he looks totally relaxed when he’s barking, as if he’s shouting in the wind, but I wish he would STFU. I don’t know how to make him stop...I get embarrassed and start berating him. It’s annoying.

As one of my friends once said at an accident scene---"Check your own pulse first." Check YOUR energy first, then get engaged with your dog's energy. He needs to be engaged with you, too--his attention needs to be redirected and deflected by you to where you want and need it. Put him on a leash, and when he barks, get his attention by 'ssst' or a touch. Tell him 'no'--quietly and calmly. Or 'no bark' is what I use, so he knows that it's something specific I want him to stop, Not even in a conversational tone--a quiet, calm tone where you simply expect him to obey. Generally, they will. Reward with attention and quiet calm praise. After a fair bit of work, I use 'aht!' instead of 'no'; it gets their attention on me, where I want it, and they check in to see what's up when they hear it.
When you're at the park and he starts barking, call him to you, praise him, then do some serious obedience with him. Give him a job--something to take the place of the yapping you don't want. Eventually, barking will become the signal for YOU to do YOUR job--engage with him for serious fun. Then you can work in coming to you and asking for attention instead of barking, and there you go.
As for appropriate barking--I ask my dogs to 'watch'. If they feel barking is okay, they bark at whatever it is--and it has to be SOMETHING--and are praised, then told to shush and watch. If they bark inappropriately, they just get told to hush, and are expected to do so. If they don't shush....they're aware of something I'm not, and it's time to get the flashlight and go look.
Patience and persistence will get you everywhere. Good luck!

My dogs love picnics. After walks or play in the park, I get the towel down and they share lunch. Their favorites we can share are boiled eggs, baby carrots, and veggie potato chips dipped in yogurt, and of course, beef sticks or pieces. They like PB&J sandwiches, or Braunschweiger sandwiches too. But sometimes it's just dog food, they like it better in the park. It's great to have a little lunch when I reach the summit or peak of any hike, where we get to sit and just enjoy the view to rest before going back. We mostly do treats after we're back, but on longer hikes, that's a good snack time. People need a change of scenery too. I don't want to forget how beautiful my surroundings can be when I leave the house for walks instead of just the neighborhood walks again. I save those for the cold, dark or rainy times, or when I'm in a hurry. They go with me whenever possible. We have our great spots everywhere. Behind the shopping centers, dog park on the way or way back from shopping. Window coverings for hot days with windows down to the no escape point, run in and don't forget the dogs are waiting. Every day is an adventure with dogs.

It was obvious that she felt uncomfortable and Cesar really tried with all his energy and analogies to try to make her understand what he means. And sometimes you just dont get through to someone, not at least right away.

These techniques really do work for dog to human resource guarding. We don’t have that problem w/our 2 dogs. Neither couldn’t care less what we do w/their food or treats no matter how much they want them. This took a lot of work using these techniques, but it’s successful! My issue now since adopting a puppy, is dog to dog resource guarding. Not from the puppy, but my older dog, who was an only dog for 5 yrs. I’ve employed many of your techniques on the puppy, which has made her absolutely free of resource guarding. But, my 5 yr old border collie mix has been a major challenge! Luckily, she’s not aggressive; no biting, no lunging to snap, etc. I think the fact that I keep working on it is what’s kept her from going to that next level. But I still wanna reach my goal of appropriate behavior/reaction. There’s a big difference between another dog actively trying to steal your dinner & the cat casually walking 3 feet away from your fave ball. For my girl, every situation where food or prized possessions are involved is like another dog shoving their face in her bowl. There’s also a concept of sharing component that’s missing w/her that’s been impossible for me to teach. Even respecting her personal boundaries, she’s resistant. I’d love to see a video on addressing dog to dog resource guarding. Especially for difficult cases/stubborn working breeds that already have instinctual guarding habits in their DNA. I really need your help w/my border collie mix girl!

I used to watch dog whisperer like 10 years ago so my memory could be a bit off. But I remember Cesar saying if you use a verbal command like "okay" or "you can" it brings excitement into the eating after going through the efforts of calming the dog down. You rather want them to approach the food in a calm state of mind. In stead of like "ready, set, go".
I guess it also depends on what energy type your dog is because I've seen dogs eat this way who aren't aggressive to food so it most certainly does work with some dogs.🤷🏻‍♀️
