- I spent a lot less time this year filming stuff I found at Expo this year, but here's a potpourri of random things I looked at including my first ever purchase at an Expo after attending three years in a row.

This was a first. I started watching your video and bam, the intro has my brother and I walking out of the Expo; too funny. Anyhow, great vid capturing some of the cool kit at this years sweltering hot PNW Expo 🙌

Especially since this is also my work truck, so I can’t have anything permanent mounted.
FWIW - I went from Lava Box to Ignik. The home brew ammo can versions transfer an insane amount of heat directly onto the regulator hose. Such that it made me skittish having my family around it. The Ignik on the other hand has the regulator as a quick connect and is out and away from the burner transferring almost no heat to the hose. That and the legs are built in. I love the portable fire - ban or no ban. I hate smelling like smoke and dealing with getting a fire dead out. For me these have been one of those game changers I didn't know I needed until I had one.

Very cool stuff Donald! I do understand the whole cost issue on some of those items, they do have R&D, design, production test, and finally production of a product to sell. So they do need to work the bugs out and recoup on the investment. a lot of that stuff you could go with out, but it sure does make it nice and easy if you don't mind the investment. Thanks for sharing, and we always enjoy the content.

Fire bans helped me disassociate backpacking with evening campfire. Once you don't 'need' a campfire to have fun camping, you save yourself all sorts of hassle. Bringing or collecting firewood, tending to a fire, leaving it while doing a chore, properly extinguishing. My 5 pound propane tank will last me a week of vehicle camping. Or, it seems, one or two nights of campfire. Now, I'd have to pack more propane and the campfire stove. Stick a nice warm lantern next to the firepit, wear a down coat, maybe even go old school with a hot water bottle. No fire simplifies the camp experience, and is arguably lower impact.
I live in Arizona and also enjoy camping without fires. We have a Lil Red Campfire that has served us well. It also doesn't use as much propane as these. We only carry two 5lb tanks, one for the stove & one for the campfire. We have never run out with our normal use after 10 days. It provides heat but we have also cooked sausages & smores with it. I do have a pop-up-pit for when we can have a fire but while it is nice I enjoy not dealing with carrying wood.

Some great products wish I'd had the chance to get to Redmond for the show. As goofy as the air Daylodge awning is, its wind resistance is a pretty great idea - but that electric awning seems like it's an over-the-top solution to an issue that no one needs to spend money on!

You made the right choice in the ammo can pit. You supported a small business put together in California rather than something that is mass produced made in China like the Ignik.

Donald -- for simple removable wall mounts, look into the "French cleat" -- a carpentry technique that can be adapted to metal if needed. In wood, it's just a matter of one T-nut and a thumbscrew for securing the platform. If weatherproofing the fixed part, or even the whole assembly, is crucial then PVC moldings are probably suitable for most applications -- if you're handy and have the right tools!
I really liked that air awning. That is a great solution for most awning drawbacks.

Used a geopress at Philmont a few years ago. It worked great. I could filter then pour into my backpack bladder, or cups. Worth every penny.
Love that Racksbrax! Don't know how much it will cost in Canada, but the ability to take the awing off and on, and more importantly to me, easily move the awning from one side of the vehicle to the other is awesome! Thanks for another informative video!
I love my lavabox, but with the tacticool kit that they offer you have to be careful as it is not forest service approved so is not certified for use during burn bans. That can be an issue for legal reasons.

Wow, that Grayl product looks genius. I have a very nice outdoor water purifier that fits Nalgene bottles, and I'm really happy with it... I think I would still get some of those Grayls. Those look ridiculously handy, thanks for sharing, Donald!

I am exclusively a DIY guy. The myriad of alum😮 extrusions out there (and my network of folks using them) has me adapting ALL sorts of mount systems. E-track is the easy one (although heavy, its bombproof)... my commercial tractor trailer build/repair guys have loads of alum extrusion options. I adapted some of those on the outside of my trailer for kitchen, and shelf options. Slim and if your able to cable upward 45° to something (rain gutters, etc) they are great. E-track inside vans and trailer for ALL sorts of modular units, shelves, bunks...etc. When the shop tears down s trailer i buy ALL the E track SUPER cheap.
I was going to suggest E-track as well as there are a large variety of attachments for it and it is sturdy. I had a lot of it in my step van RV (I sure miss that rig)

Very useful info Donald. I can think of 4 uses for the RV rail, too bad they don’t sell just the hanging brackets so I can DIY a little shelf or extension table. Look forward to seeing your new awning.
Nice things aren’t cheap, spend a little and keep spending or go ahead and jump and not spend again, I learned that myself

The expo was pretty cool, it was my first one. Your Frontier looked pretty good, I was bummed I didn’t get to run into you. Lots of great ideas at the expo, I’ll definitely be maki g my way back next year.

I just saw a hot dog trailer on fb market place. Whole kitchen with an umbrella for $1350. Just needs bigger wheels :)

6:12 Not an expert, but if I had to guess... The time/manpower/logistics of collecting, shipping, inspecting & cleaning empty cans is probably more than just getting new ones.
Edit: that mounting rail system looks nice, but a generic French Cleat is a lot cheaper.
I bought the mid-size Tacticool. works pretty good. However, the "overland package" with the bag sucks. The fire can is great, but good luck getting it back in the bag. I hate when the bag is to small to easily repack the product. I'd buy the fire can again, but skip the bundle with bag. Also, I really liked the wolf pak battery box. Saving my pennies for that. can move between my Jeep and trailer.
If anyone is interested in the Ignik fire can, keep an eye on rheir product at REI as i have seen it a couple times at half-off. I ended up buying the Lava Box at OE Mtn West last year and am pleased with it.
I bought the $90 Tacticool propane fire pit at PNW as well..! FYI, there is a bag that fits this perfect from 5.11 Tactical. 😃😃

I didn't know who she was, I just went over to look at the Defender. She happened to be there so we filmed a quick little segment, it'll be in an upcoming video.
Sadly the military Ammo producers don’t reuse that I know of. We stored the empty cans and occasionally used to consolidate munitions for storage and shipments.

cool stuff still like car camping out of the bed topper shell just wish more manufactures. had 6.5' box ranger .tacoma , new maverick, gladiator all have boxes are to small or. the best a sigle cab 8' box
Yes you’re right it was a scorcher it was 130° in my trailer. I bailed out early on the first day of the event headed back for Portland for a repair pitstop and then out to the Oregon Coast Hwy. It was nice and cool.
Talking about prices, almost all of the stuff/gear when it has the word overland is expensive. Doesn’t mean it isn’t cool, just expensive. The air awning reminded me of the Opus tent camper which uses air tubes.
solid choice for the fire can. you cant beat their price. I made my own and it cost about $100. I find the ignik to look pretty with better parts but the heat output isnt enough
I think you made the right choice on your ammo can fire pit. I’ve got the Ingik and the fitting on the side is not ideal ( I remove it for transport so it doesn’t get damaged). If mine ever gives up the ghost I’ll probably go with a tacicool one.
You could probably build your own Chuck box out of a container and have a water pump rigged up kinda like you did in the Subaru. Start simple with what you know you need and modify as you go. Be a nice project for a video series.

A lot of places don't allow propane fire pits either, experienced that at Bryce a few years back.
It depends on the level of fire restrictions in place. Usually propane fire pits are allowed but if there is extrfeme risk of fires compounded with firefighters already thinly dispersed fighting fires there will be a total ban that includes propane fire pits.
After Jason's Patreon camp out last summer I went out and bought an Outland Living fire pit similar to what almost everybody there was using. I used it all last winter and this spring for outings in places where a real fire wasn't practical. It was great. It kept me and two to three others hands and feet warm even when it was in the teens. The only drawback I see with it is the size. It isn't very compact, but then I bought the larger 21" version on purpose for group use. I recently noticed that there are several vendors on amazon now that offer a cooking grate/ grill for these so you can cook on them. That might just be a soon-to-be purchase.
Yeah I'm actually thinking of fabbing a tiny little grill for my tiny little ammo can fire pit. I could maybe cook one decent bratwurst on it, heh, but as long as I'm burning the propane, might as well use it. 😄

Yes, the Gambler 500 is a long-running tradition around here. I believe the original idea was you had to come with a sub-$500 car, preferably NOT a car designed for offroad use, though I don't think they enforce the $500 rule anymore. Everyone is supposed to pick up trash along the way. Sort of a fun silly & creative public lands cleanup...the cars are often over-the-top ridiculous. 😄

King awning seems to be a better design than those heavy 270 awning. How much does it cost for the non electric type?

I was unfamiliar with her or her channel. That Defender just caught my eye and I went for a closer look...she was there so we filmed a little segment. Cool rig for sure. That'll be coming up in a video soon.
Autoworks - charges at 400W. My alternator does not put out 400W.
You may want to drill some hole in that ammo can to allow heat to radiant out the sides to help keep you warm instead of having all the heat go out the top.
mine doesn't have holes. I compared it to the ignik. ignik needs to allow more flow. doesn't heat up enough.
I think Solo Stove Mesa XL might be good for campfire, can use both fire wood and wood pallets for fuel
Doesn't work for campfire restricted areas. Need to be able to turn the fire off with a valve.

@@notjohnwick007 Yeah, as @om617yota8 said, the idea is to be able to have a legal fire of sorts when wood fires are prohibited. When real fires (eg solo stove) are permitted, I just build an actual fire either in the campsite fire ring if one is there, or in my little Snowpeak fire pit. I got this propane pit more for ambiance and a bit of outdoor evening heat at high elevation during summer months. 🙂
@@softroadingthewest the reasons I like about the Solo Stove Mesa/Mesa XL, because it can be put on top of the table or anything can levitated the Solo Stove Mesa from the ground, and of course the smokeless burning
Wow! Those propane fire pits sure burn a lot of propane. Do you plan on carrying two tanks? Or, a larger tank?
I'll have to see how it goes. I don't envision myself running it for hours on end. I've seen people run their propane fire all evening, but for me this would just be to be able to sit next to a fire for a little while after cooking dinner. My 5-lb bottle seems to last forever just cooking off of it, I figure if I use the fire pit an hour a night, plus cooking, I should be able to go 3 nights, but I'll just have to see what happens. I believe I could fit a larger 11-lb bottle into the spot where I carry my current small bottle, which I suspect would get me through a week of cooking and using the fire pit a little bit each night.
I have a 20-lb bottle at home which I could throw in the truck if I knew I was going to go and set up camp in one spot for multiple days, but I usually move camp every day and generally try to keep the setup nimble and without extra stuff floating around in the back. I'll just have to see how it all goes. :-)
Can you also grill over your new box?
They do sell grills for their larger models. I've already thought about fabbing one for mine, though it would be about enough room for maybe one bratwurst 😄

Most of the equipment sold for overlanding is crazy overpriced. I made 2 of those fire pits for a total of $70 ($35 each) that’s ammo cans, copper tubing for the gas burner, gas hose with regulator, gas hose connectors and lava rocks.
With that said the $50 for the DIY kit is actually pretty good.
Question: I'm very interested in the ammo can fire pit, but my concern is transporting a 20ib tank several hours to campsites and such, I'm just curious how you will be doing this?
Ignik sells a small propane tank that I have filled once so far and I use it for the Fire Can as well as my camp stove. Highly Recommend

Most of us carry propane bottles already, for our stoves, heaters, etc. It's not uncommon to transport a propane bottle. I have mine mounted on my bumper.
@@softroadingthewest ya normally the small camping ones seems common and easy but I was more so asking about the big 20ib ones you see for a grill
@@echols2010 its very common to carry 1 (or 2) 20lb propane tanks for longer adventures while camping in midsized rigs all the way up to RVs. they are pretty standard and can be refilled or swapped out at most gas stations, local hardware stores, or even walmart in the USA.
At Min 10:34, if the dude would have drunk the water on the spot, I would have bought one. The fact that he didn't, gives me pause. lol
I cut out the part of my footage where he said something like "I'm not gonna drink this because I've been drinking water all day and really need to use the bathroom." Felt a little TMI for the video but now you know. :-)

Ammo can fire pits are useless, they put all their heat straight up with very little radiant heat and burn alot of propane. I have an 18" round fire pit with lots of lava rocks. Yes it is bigger to haul, but was $90 and puts out 4X the heat. The Tembo Tusk firepit is the absolute biggest joke at $325 and puts 0 heat out. Even a group that won one at a raffle were laughing how pathetic it was

Craft Autoworks saying "Same price as most of our competitors for this size product" about their Overland Electrical System is a big joke !??
First, I had to go check their website for the capacity they offer because he never said it in the video, so FYI it's a 1280Wh battery for 1995$.
An Ecoflow Delta 1300 (1260Wh battery from the spec) is priced in the US at 899$, less than half the price! So, no it's NOT comparably priced to many power stations.
And yes we can talk features and they offer different features than mainstream powerstations that can be worth it for some (mainly a better access do 12VDC both in input and output) but still the price is impossible to compare to power stations of similar size/capacity.
(And an Ecoflow Delta 1300 offers a 1800W inverter, great remote control, etc.)
I would say he may have been successful a decade ago before the EcoFlows/Anker etc existed but it no longer makes sense to DIY it unless you’re doing big power for a van/house.
Did that guy do any research? Cool DIY project, I’ve made several myself, but you can’t compete with a factory engineered solution.
The shortcoming with the EF Delta 1300 is, it's lithium ion - after 800 cycles it drops to 80% power. That's EcoFlow's numbers. Lithium iron phosphate is an advancement over lithium ion in battery technology. Safer, longer lifespan, less susceptible to temperature changes - has a wider operating range.
I have a EF Delta 1300 and really like it. I knew I'd be unlikely to build my own battery bank no matter how many Will Prowse videos I watched. I wanted something self contained. I also liked the idea that you could fully charged it from a wall outlet in about an hour.
@@donwyates if you want to update you can currently get the new LFP delta 2 and extra battery for $1050 at Home Depot. 2 kWh of LFP power.

Gosh that Craft stuff is seriously expensive. I literally laughed out loud when he said $1350 for a sink in a box, and that was the reduced price. I wish him well, hope he makes a million, but no thank you. Wow. Edit: He's also just plain wrong about the power pack, and the capabilities of lithium ion vs. lithium iron phosphate batteries.
The idea of a 'fire ban' is to eliminate the danger of open flame starting a forest fire. Propane fire pits have open flame. Does that not violate the fire ban?
Propane doesn't throw sparks, they're very safe. Fire bans usually include alcohol stoves because they can get knocked over and spread flame quickly. Canister stoves are generally excluded from the bans.

Depends on which state there are different stages of bans, full or partial. Partial fire bans like In park approved fire rings only or no open flames that can't be turned off like wood fires, charcoal, briquette, wood pellet, candles, torches. So like portable liquid fuel or propane may be permitted during a partial fire ban. Full bans is no fires period.
The military is not going to reuse the ammo cans. More for us! The same way our government left over $7 billion in military equipment over in Afghanistan. One thing's for sure our government is very wasteful.

Poor guy is there all day long demonstrating the thing and drinking water out of it. I cut out the bit where he told me "I've been drinking water all day and reeeeally need to go to the bathroom, so I'm not gonna drink this." Felt a little TMI for my video, but now you know. 😆

Fair weather campers. Don't you know the planet is boiling most of the time? If not freezing. I can't imagine staying in one of these things.
That place looks like it's for people with lots of money. Lots of expensive solutions looking for problems that dotn exist. I'd rather DIY most of that stuff.
Some don't have talent or are disabled to DYI it.
Lol electric awning? Too much money floating around this "community." What was a minimalist lifestyle rapidly turned into glamping but off road.

Certainly an unnecessary extravagance for many, and not something I'd be inclined to put on my rig. But camping is a spectrum...some people camp in RVs that are literally nicer than my house, and some people camp by bushcrafting their own shelter and killing their dinner. Most of us fall somewhere in between, and everyone should be free to set themselves up however makes sense to them to get out and enjoy themselves. Who cares if some people glamp? It doesn't impact MY experience outdoors at all.
Here's another take on the electric awning. At the following Expo event in Colorado a couple months later, I had a subscriber come talk to me. He too likes to take his truck out camping, but he's a paraplegic in a wheelchair. He was super excited about the electric awning, because there's no way he can set up a conventional awning.

So the water filtration dude didnt drink from his own product. A little suspicious.
He told me he had been demo-ing drinking from this thing all day and really needed to pee, so he didn't want to drink yet more...fair enough. I cut that bit from the video but I guess I should have left it in. Thing is, that water fountain he scooped from was clean enough that I would've drank it without even filtering, so it's not even like there was anything to fear.
At a subsequent Expo, I filmed a number of camping toilet products. Fortunately, none of those people used their product in front of me either, LOL
Electric awning? Stay home! That is NOT camping!
It's not for me either, but I hesitate to get too judge-y. Whatever way YOU camp, I guarantee you, there's someone who will say "that is NOT camping!" (believe me, I've heard it many times LOL) Some people feel that if you're not carrying everything you need into the wilderness on your back, it's not camping. Some feel that if you carry more than a knife and aren't building your own shelter out of branches and killing your dinner, it's not camping. Camping is a spectrum, from those who sleep on the dirt covered by leaves to those who drive into the woods in a massive RV that's better equipped than my house. All of us share the same desire, to spend time out there in the outdoors.
I was at Expo Mountain West this past weekend, and I spent some time talking with a subscriber who gets out on solo adventures like me...and he's paraplegic, gets around in a wheelchair. An electric awning like this would be extremely useful for him.
I no longer camp in the summer because of oregons authoritarian bans.
I don't see wildfire prevention as authoritarian. We've lost so much forest already over the past three years. I 100% support fire restrictions.
@@softroadingthewest it's authoritarian when you make rules to punish when it's their fault the lands are so mismanaged to begin with.
My house nearly got taken by wildfire a couple years back, and there's a bugout bag near the door for me, the girlfriend, and the pets right now as I type this. I watch wildfires pop up in Pulsepoint, and thankfully get put out quickly, all the time. Plenty of rules aren't oppressive, they're just reinforcing what should be ordinary good sense - don't light fires when the entire state is a tinderbox.
@om617yota8 I also had to evacuate my home from a fire that was 1/2 a mile from my home. I improved the odds of my homes survival now by replacing the roof with a metal one and took out dead brush from around my home. Don't finger wag at me.
