The shortlist included 'Cat's Eye' by Margaret Atwood, 'The Book of Evidence' by John Banville, 'Jigsaw' by Sybille Bedford, 'A Disaffection' by James Kelman and 'Restoration' by Rose Tremain.
The 1989 judges were David Lodge, Maggie Gee, Helen McNeil, David Profumo and Edmund White.

Funny that there was such controversy about Amis book being excluded, a novel most don't remembers and is buried in the shadow of Ishiguro's classic.

@@user-lw6dn8tn7p He said "(The remains of the day) ought to not be on the shortlist. I think its poorly written . I think very very basic lessons about how to put a sentence together, what ugly sounds to avoid. I think the plot is transparent. I think it's written in bad faith." And then he said the english never believed what their rulers told them exc... That's more or less what he said about the book.
Also Jacobson's take of Remains of the Day has aged so poorly
