Guided by Wonder: A Naturalist's Observation Skills

  • In a world full of wonder how do we become better observers and deepen our experience? I use a number of naturalist skills that I have spent my life practicing, but I am also inspired by the work of John Muir Laws and nature journalers who have embraced the art of seeing the world with renewed curiosity and wonder. This then is an invitation to slow down--and fall in love again--by paying attention to what you notice.
Some of my favorite resources on this topic include "The Laws Guide to Nature Drawing and Journaling" by John Muir Laws; "Tom Brown's Field Guide to Nature Observation and Tracking" by Tom Brown Jr.; and "Coyote's Guide to Connecting with Nature" by Jon Young et. al.
This video is part of an ongoing series exploring my journey as a naturalist. Please subscribe and follow my channel for weekly episodes and other naturalist videos.

Thank you Jolynn, this was a fun video to think through and film. It brought up lots of ideas for me. I've also just started a weekly newsletter that continues many of these same thoughts that you might enjoy following on my website.

I love this! I'm in the forest a lot, observing, foraging and just being. Since learning about "nature journaling" I've really slowed myself down to be a better observer. This video is such a good reminder. Thank you.

This is so wonderful David. And agree with Yvea - how nice to have space to just observe the beautiful footage, without cluttering it up. Thank you for these videos! I'm adding a link to this to my little website!

I love sharing beautiful footage and letting it breathe like this. This will always be my goal moving forward. I also make nature ambience videos over at Earthtone Productions and those videos have no talking at all so the footage gets to speak for itself. czcams.com/video/F8ssJpORoLY/video.html

Thank you, David! I had a very peaceful and intense moment of observation in a city park a few days ago - it was like hitting pause on a very busy day and the memories are vivid and sensual. I’m amazed by how learning to draw and nature journal is deepening my observation skills. Such a beautiful video!

Beautifully said. Love is a state of present flow. Wonderful reminders. To lose time... it is such a delight. We do not punish children for ignorance (well... some people do) but we so often punish ourselves for it in adulthood. curiousity and ignorance run hand in hand as playmates and are lit up by love into understanding. Thank you friend

I am touched by this particular video, by what it says. I was lucky enough that when I was a child, my father gave me a taste for nature. A chance to be ecstatic about its beauty. Later, I discovered that I could not only find beauty in it, but literally feel a strong affection for a tree, plants, and the living world all around me. An affection, which sometimes would not come to me so easily, so profound for human beings. Strange feeling but offering me a different vision.

You are so fortunate to have been connected to the natural world and to a sense of beauty in your childhood. That is a precious gift that shapes your entire life.

I love that you're thinking about this. There is no easy answer but it's a great field to play in. Personally, I'm a big fan of finding your own path. Make your own content and find your own audiences who love what you love and do. For example, if you like to write it's one thing to write articles for magazines or write books for publishers, and another altogether to self-publish your own books or write your own newsletter or blog. I'm happy to chat more about this because it's fun to share insights and inspire people to do what they love. In the meantime, you might enjoy following my weekly Lukas Guides nature newsletter as one example of how I do this.
