Hey coach some questions here.. during SVT can you give Verapamil 2.5mg-5mg IV as alternate to Cardizem and also Atenolol 5mg as alternate to Metoprolol? please enlighten me.. thanks!
Hey thanks for tuning in Wilford! The reason I bring up Metoprolol & Cardizem is they are the most common drugs found in EMS/ACLS courses. The medication Verapamil at that dose 2.5-5mg IV can in fact treat acute SVT, just not as common to carry in EMS. Now, Atenolol in my experience is used more commonly as a "take home" medication in pill form to treat those suffering from a long term SVT diagnosis, the script will vary patient to patient but 25mg is common for daily use for the SVT patient at home to take daily.
