- Roitman (1884 - 1943) had a most beautiful, lyric tenor voice. It was very flexible, and he was able to sing the most complicated coloratura (i.e. the long, flowery, twiddly bits). He was renowned for having the unusual facility of being able to pass from a very high falsetto into full voice with absolutely no discernable break. This is technically very difficult to execute and few, of even the world's greatest male singers, have ever been able to achieve it as faultlessly as Roitman.
This is my uncle leo's father, a great Chazan, and a sweet sweet voice.

The beauty of his mezza voce is mesmerizing. Seeing him on film singing is more impressive than hearing him on record. the voice is marvelously lyric and expressive. Records do not do him justice.

Skorecki, you have a right to your opinion,But you are wrong!! Pinchik might have a good voice, but Hershmanss Eilu Devorim is the sweetest and smoothest piece ever, but, all around, Roitman, not only had a good voice, but most of his chazzonus was his own compositions that he himself wrote. Most Chazzanim sang but didnt know to compose. I am partial to Roitman because his son, Leo, was married to my mothers sister. But, of all the Chazzanim, they say that Koussevitzky was the Pavarotti of Chazzonim, while the one who really understood what he was singing, and was a true Shomer Shabbos and full of Yiras Shopmayim was Yossele, my favorite!!!

i love roitman, and this video is one of the most moving pieces of filmed music EVER (in fact it's been on my blog, club skorecki, for a year) ... but i just said i find pinchik's voice and his style (ashkenaz AND sepharadic at the same time) to be the most complex and moving EVER recorded ... for me, all this is just a subjective music discussion, it's purely emotionnal: pinchik Is the greatest hazzan ever ...
oldest recorded hazzan maybe ... and sweetest voice, with pinchik's and berele chagy's ... please post his pee world war one masterpieces (i only have them in vinyl ... and have treasured them for thirty years at lesat)
@Cantormatis Finest piece? It is certainly his most famous and popular (along with Rachel M'vaka). It seems that many of the popular pieces of the day had repeating melodies which people could follow and remember. This is a particularly good example of that. Another is Rosenblatt's Shomer Yisrael.
