Cyndi recorded this with a very gentle voice because she wanted it to sound soft and childlike. she has spoken about the power of a whisper. The song was actually made as a tribute to her friend who recently died of AIDs. This song has gone on to become a major anthem for all those who suffer. Cyndi's song Im Gonna Be Strong is also amazing

I sang this as a tribute at the house of 1 of my best friends mothers after her funeral. We were sityjng arounf plating music and eating and talking about Sonya. I asked her if it was okay if I sing one of OUR favorite songs and she said YES. This and Time After Time were both of our favorites. She had the cassettes in her room but I told Mom don't worry about looking for them I'll sing it accapella. I'd had tears coming down while I was singing this and when I finished, Mom and Dad were both crying. It has always been a very emotional and special song for me and it just always will be. ❤

Honestly, I think the song embodies Cyndi. She still put her true self out there. She was known in the 80’s for her music but also for bright red hair & very different from the norm hairstyles & fashion sense. She is & always will be a trend setters who does her true self. Love her so much.

Remember the album was called "she's so unusual" - which is what was said about her in a way to NOT say "she's weird... or I don't get it" -- she was and IS awesome - I love the version of "We are the World" - that is all about Cyndi -- it's kind of hilarious - you can see most of the singers - like Huey Lewis - getting a kick out of it - but Kim Carnes is fuming... like her "big star moment" is being usurped... czcams.com/video/HpReqNFVL-0/video.html

The '80s would not have been the same without Cyndi Lauper. "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun", "Time After Time", "The Goonies 'r' Good Enough", a fantastic role in "We Are The World/USA for Africa." Her powerful voice is showcased well in the beautiful "I'm Gonna Be Strong" czcams.com/video/rbx7ss4F7JE/video.html

80s music will always be considered the most dominant of all time. 100 years from now, 80s music will still be featured on most commercials and on people's music playlists, whether it's pop, rock, new wave and heavy metal.

Dana says- We used to take my son to a camp every year that was especially for us families with kids on the Autism Spectrum and at the end of camp, on the last day, we'd all gather for the kids to get their special awards. The very last thing we did every year was sing this song as one of the organizers led, playing the guitar. Most of us parents couldn't get through the song without breaking into tears because we know the battles our kids face every day and will always face, for understanding, to find friends, to withstand bullying and ignorance and people who are supposed to help them but don't, but we also cried because our kids are so amazing, have such strength and love and empathy, and because we love them for exactly who they are. This song will always hold a special place in our hearts and Cyndi's heart for anyone who is different, misunderstood, or just dances to the beat of a different drum is a blessing.

Cyndi's songs are ALWAYS emotional, whether they're sad like my favorite Sally's Pigeons or fun like She Bop or Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. I suggest listening to Sally's Pigeons when you are alone. She Bop, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, Iko Iko are fun and up-beat ones, but for emotional try All Through The Night, Time After Time, I'm Gonna Be Strong, I Drove All Night.

I was shocked to see her in concert about 18 years ago and find she has HUGE pipes. That little girl voice was all I'd heard. She was even in a wheelchair (she said the elephant Cher Rode had knocked her off the stage and broke her leg), and she still belted her songs hard.

Though Cyndi didn't write this song, it ended up being her signature song. A few years after its release, the song was embraced by the LGBT community as an anthem for self-acceptance and solidarity. Having had a sister who is gay and having had a close friend who passed away from AIDS in the early 80s, Cyndi embraced this new following that the song had, and decided to make it into something. She started a foundation called The True Colors Fund with the intention of raising money to help fight homelessnes among LGBT youth. There is now a True Colors shelter and a True Colors concert tour that helps raise money for the foundation. Cyndi just turned 67 and continues to combine her music with her activism. As the title of her first album says, "She's So Unusual", but she's amazing as well.
