Wow, that's a ton of links!
Well with those out of the way, time for me to ramble on about this video.
    I hate it.
Well, hate is a little strong. I'd say dislike.
I just feel like I could have done this way, way better, and, yet, here we are. Oh well! It was a new type of video, so you can tell I had some issues with it. I just believe I didn't get my feelings about each song across. But, hey, if I get any new songs out of this or if anyone else listens to someone new from this, I'll consider this a success.
And, also, I gave the popups a break this video. After the last one, they deserve it.

      Uh, hey! How's it going?
This video was just a bit of a shitpost, since I just wanted to talk about something I felt like deserved to be talk about more. And I suppose it managed to find the right audience even though I tried to hide the point. Your work is great and I (and many, many other people based on the comments) thoroughly enjoy it.

@@Pan.Gaming Yes you should! The amount of emotion, beauty, whimsy, and clever writing encapsulated in that album is incredible. Songs like Cicada Days, Euthanisa (a song for me that is personally one of the saddest songs I've ever heard) and Against the Kitchen Floor are some the best in catalogue. It is his best mixed album and I feel is his most real, personal ,and cohesive work. It almost feels more like a folk album at times with songs like falling up and Let's Get You Home (which is another song that is just beautiful.) Its a work that is very different from the high energy of the normal album (which I also love, Marsha is one of his best written pieces imo and is rly good live) and it works for it! okay I hope thats enough of me gushing over "In case I make it" for you to give it a earnest listen.

It’s neat how in each song on that album they take inspiration from distinctly different artists that can be recognized if you’re enough of a nerd. Their other albums are phenomenal with my top favorite song of any of them being Birdhouse In Your Soul. Give them a listen if you haven’t already!

I just flat out wasn't expecting to see all of these songs and artists in a single video. Oddly enough, it wasn't even these songs that drew me into each artist. It wasn't even from the same source that I started listening to them! I didn't even register the connection because while I've seen Chonny Jash in my recommended list before, I've never clicked on one of their videos! I think it's just absolutely fascinating that even with how different all of these artists are, a lot of people tend to listen to them in tandem.

I enjoyed maybe the first couple chonny jash songs, but my love of WW and tally hall comes from how unique every one of their songs sounds, and I don't get the same feel from Chonny Jash. My playlists growing up were consisted of a huge range of different songs that gathered from all over the place, from meme and video game songs like Still Alive, to queen and the Beatles, to Avril Lavigne and Neutral Milk Hotel, to extremely random songs like these songs from a band called "Communism" that I found by just searching communism into the iTunes search bar. I could never listen to an entire album from these, even those I liked a lot like Queen, because it felt so monotonous to me. So when I found tally hall (and later ww), i loved the fact that I was basically listening to one of my playlists; every song completely changed its style while also maintaining a strong narrative.
Which is why I don't really like Chonny Jash that much. I'll add a couple of his songs to my aforementioned playlists, but to me his songs mesh together as loud, heavy and screamy, and generally I prefer the original over the cover.

I love Chonny jash!! They give such a new meaning to cover to where I don’t know if it even count for the original meaning, but I love it.
His series following multiple songs by tally hall through his three characters, heart, mind, and soul is again, amazing. “Spring and a storm” by tally hall has meant so much to me and I’ve drawn up tattoo designs with the lyrics that I plan to have done one day, in both versions jash covers, he keeps the “we have so much left to sing” which has always been the most impactful line to me.
I love the dissection of their music, because the praise is warranted, but seeing how jash keeps and trades and changes for narrative purposes constantly, but not only keeps that line, puts HEAVY emphasis on it, and covered it twice with two different characters singing, leads me to believe they might have a similar connection to mine to the song.
Id love to be Able to make music like that, just to spend time and deconstruct and reconstruct the elements to spend time with the art, he’s such a wonderful artist and I’m glad we get to share his way of re-contextualizing music with the world. It’s so awesome.

Ok since you have made the offer, I will fight you on it. (note that all of this is with all of the respect in the world, this is a great video) Not only do I think that the normal is not his best album, I would say that it is his worst. To best illustrate we should go through his other albums (also including tapeworms obviously) First of all I’ll talk about about “I case I make it” As and end to his music career it serves as a beautiful, almost epilogue to his career and has such an incredible feeling of finality. Self-ish is his most well put together album (my personal favorite) and it has the most cohesion of any of his albums, with its use of motifs and its flawless management of energy on a track by track basis it is the one I return to the most commonly for a full album listen through in order. Lastly we have everything is a lot. My thoughts on this album are very simple. It has the best individual songs on average that get stuck in my head the most. It delivers banger after banger and has the most varied ideas of any album. What that leaves us with is the normal album. It doesn’t have that It doesn’t have the dramatic finality of “In case I make it” nor the cohesiveness of Self-ish and while some of the songs go hard it doesn’t have a strong of a line up as everything is a lot. To me at least it just doesn’t have any sense of identity within wills wider work and feels like it has the least to say, while trying to cast the widest net. Don’t take this as me not like the album by the way, suburbia is and incredible song, 222 goes unbelievably crazy, and love me normally is some his best work, but the overall package is the weakest. Anyway thanks for reading this borderline insane ramblings and I hope you have a great day.

    • @Pan.Gaming
      @Pan.Gaming  Před 5 měsíci +1

I appreciate the effort put into your comment! And I'll offer a bit of a rebuttal here, as a Will Wood fan to another. (And as you've said, with respect, if it wasn't obvious.)
"In Case I Make It" is the album I've listened to the least because it's such a different feeling, like a somber ending. I agree it's a good send off for Will's career, assuming he's stopping with this album (I am not aware if that's true or not). I think one of the things that one of the things I enjoy about Will Wood is the diversity is his songs, and "In Case I Make It" is a lot of the same. As an example, the first three songs, Tomcat Disposables, Becoming the Lastnames, and Cicada Days, give me the same idea of Will sitting on a porch, playing a guitar, and singing to himself as he reflects. (That is until the loud part of Cicada Days, which is so good.) That's not to say that any of these songs are bad, it's just not what I expect from a Will Wood album. I really only get glimpses of what I want, from the end of "That's Enough, Let's Get You Home," or that chorus bit in "Falling Up." The few songs I do listen to from the album are "Vampire Reference in a Minor Key," "The Main Character," and "Willard!" And of those three, the first is a sadder version of "Yes, to Err is Human, So Don't Be One," and the other two are so different and unique that I instantly fell in love.
"Self-Ish" was the album that got me into Will's music, more specifically "Hand Me My Shovel, I'm Going In!". The entire album is a great display of Will mashing completely different segments together, which is my favorite bits. The slow start found in "Self-" that leads into "2012" is fantastic. And the break down that happens like 2 minutes into "2012" is great. I mean, you've listened to the album. I don't need to tell you how each song is like two or three different parts together. I think the only reason I don't put "Self-Ish" at the top spot is because only a few songs give me such a vivid picture. I couldn't tell you what "2012," "Cotard's Solution," or "The Song With Five Names" is actually about, where "Hand Me My Shovel," "Dr. Sunshine Is Dead," and the combination of "Self-" and "-Ish" each paint their own images. (But, that could just be a 'skill issue' on my part.)
"Everything is a Lot" as an album feels... boring to me? Each song flip flops between something loud and aggressive to something slower and vocal focused. Most songs let you know exactly what you're going to get from the first few seconds, and they never really take you for a ride. Once again, that's not saying these songs are bad, it's just not what I'm looking for. But my personal favorites from "Everything is a Lot" have to be "Lysergide Daydream," which doesn't initially tell you what this song sounds like in the first few seconds, and "Chemical Overreaction," which breaks down from it's high speed to a slower pace as well as moving to more introspective lyrics. However, I can agree that the ideas that each song brings is very different from the rest of the album.
And finally, "The Normal Album" which I've already suggested is Will's best one. And since I suppose I'm defending this, I'll do a little bit for each song.
      - "Suburbia Overture" feels like a perfect introduction to the album, as Will sets the scene. Even just the first part, specifically "Greetings from Mary Bell Township!," has several shifts pace as well as contrasting themes. It only gets better when we get to "(Vampire) Culture" as we get to see what the people living in the nuclear fallout version of a suburbia feel like. And god, I love how that "Blood!" line comes in each time. And finally settling in with "Love Me, Normally," is as if we're sitting down at the end of the day, staring at the night sky, just wondering why we can't just be accepted for ourselves. And that, "accept me for myself," is what the entire album is about.
      - "2econd 2ight 2eer," while it isn't one of my favorites, it's pretty good. A look at the lyrics (which you kinda have to look at them, since it's hard to tell what's Will sings, sometimes) tells a story of a man who knows that he's a little wacky, but he's not worried of labeled a psycho. I mean the line "Baby, I may be crazy but I didn't lose it, no I set it free" shows that the singer is purposefully releasing the silly! And as a bonus, I could draw some parallels to "Puppet Loosely Strung" by The Correspondents (would recommend), as that song is about the same topic, ignoring what society deems acceptable, but from an outsiders perspective.
      - "Laplace’s Angel" takes the feeling of guilt and pushes it to it's furthest extent, to the point of wondering if "Am I a bad person?" But I'll take a break from lyric analysis to talk about the music itself. While most of the song is a little same-y until the bridge (i think it's the bridge), the addition of the backing vocals present in the choruses help add to it, in addition to how the chorus grows in intensity each time it's sung.
      - Moving to "I / Me / Myself" is almost a punch in the face after the serious nature of "Laplace's Angel," which instead covers the nature of self and your own body. The entire song is almost light hearted, it explores the idea of being a girl. I mean who hasn't considered what it would be like to be the other gender. Once again, this song has several musically interesting parts, like what could be interpreted as an alarm going off as Will finishes line talking about something would be weird for society, or the bridge getting faster and more serious as Will almost yells at the listener. And that end whispering is... strange. Also, I just really like the phrase "girlfriend boyfriend".
      - I do not enjoy "...well, better than the alternative" enough to talk at length about it. But it does have a nice heartfelt slowed segment, which returns to regular when Will gets wrapped back up in what everyone else thinks of him.
      - "Outliars and Hyppocrates: a fun fact about apples" is one of my top 5 Will Wood songs. I love how it moves from the start to a faster base tempo. I love the drop for the "Well not ha-ha funny, but y'know, funny." I love the swap up after the first chorus that reminds me of "Chemical Overreaction". And "you were there, and you where there," But, the overall theme of the song, being the belief that things like mental illnesses ("The things that make you strange") are the only thing that makes you special. It's a mindset that fits with the whole staving artist theme. And lastly, how Will starts to babble the words in the last lines is representative of this mindset breaking down.
      - "BlackBoxWarrior - OKULTRA" is a fast song with a lot of words in it. Do not try to sing this one, it doesn't go well. I love the tone of this song, as it's almost talking down to you in the chorus section, and the speech is even funny to me how it ramps from "Why don't you take a seat?" to "Did Namibian Himbas tie-dye you, your ears pierced with a Phineas Gage flagpole, did you die before your day?"
I believe that it's about someone who's had anything and everything wrong with him, and, yet, all anyone can say to him is, "If it was going to kill you boy, it would have by now." It doesn't matter how you're suffering as long as you can still do your job in the morning. And even when that someone tries to get help, shown in the speech, it's nothing but throwing medical terms around and doing anything that might help without actually figuring out what the issue is. Because "What, you think ideas spread because they’re good? No, they spread because people like them."
      - "Marsha, Thankk You for the Dialectics, but I Need You to Leave" shows the contrast between how previous generations used to tough it out, no matter what the issue was, and the current day, where people struggle to tell who they themself are and what part of them is the masks/illnesses/medication they have.
      - "Love, Me Normally" is about, well, wanting to be normal. Can you tell I'm getting tired of writing this?
      - And "Memento Mori" is attempting to rewrite the feelings surrounding death. As I mention in the video, Will (and Jash, for that matter) want to fight the societal norms of death being something terrifying, and that you need to strive to make something to live past you.
So, with all that said, I really do enjoy "The Normal Album" because of it's themes of one's self, societal norms, and mental illness (which after writing this, I think there's something wrong with me). Most of the songs have very different feelings parts in them, which take you for a ride with each listen.
      as you said yourself,
"Anyway thanks for reading this borderline insane ramblings and I hope you have a great day."

@@Pan.Gaming Thanks for the response! I’ve been listening to the album a bit after writing and hearing other perspectives than my own really helps me appreciate the album (and art in general) more. Although I still agree with original that it his worst work (I still absolutely love it definitely top 20 albums I’ve ever listened to and I listen to a fuck ton of music) it does have a lot to offer that I have kind of forgotten about. I think the reason it’s so low for is that I look for something very different when listening to will wood (cicada days was my first, against the kitchen floor is my favorite) and thats why it just doesn’t do as much for me as it seems to do for you. Also the correspondents is such a based suggestion. I recently listened to foolishman (such a good album) and am working through their discography. Also I feel I am more biased towards songs that have more confusing meanings (In the wise words of chonny “I can't seem to separate The confusing from the profound”) so that is another reason I’m biased against normal. Spending months listening to a song and only then truly understanding its ins and outs is extremely rewarding for me. While I think it has about the same amount of depth as his other albums, I think it’s just easier to grasp that depth. The best way I would describe it is that they’re all equally deep, but the other albums give you a snorkel, and this one gives you a submarine. Also I really appreciate the obvious effort put into the response. I think I’ll end this by saying something we can both agree on. I completely forgot it existed in the initial post but camp here and there is definitely his worst as I would barely consider it an album.

I looked at the thumbnail and I was like "oh haha those are people Chonny Jash has covered"
    I. May have hurt my leg with how hard I was hitting it when I realized that was actually where you were going with it and I wasn’t going crazy

I know exactly what those 4 songs have in common:
They are in my liked songs in Spotify.
Other great introductions to each band would be:
    That Handsome Devil - Savages
Tally Hall - Ruler of Everything
    Cosmo Sheldrake - Come along
    Will Wood - Laplace's Angel
And yeah, seeing how we coincide in music taste I'm definitely gonna give Chonny a listen.

Ooo, so you're one of the few here who finding Chonny out of this! Cool!
Part of the reason I recommended the ones I did was to have something kind of popular and then a song I personally really enjoyed! But, even then, all of them have so many great songs. Every single one you've listed here are all fantastic in their own right!

I enjoy the fact that you cover nearly every single one of the artists that's been the most formative to my own musical creativity. I rarely ever seen someone cover any of these artists, let alone all of them!

Maybe you already know this, but AXIE, someone who makes fan songs about games, mainly mascot horror like FNAF or Poppy Playtime, has released a song called "TERRIBLE THINGS", the song is about the FNAF character William Afton and his experience of life and death. In his song, he also uses the sound verse from Charlie's Inferno, but changes it to fit his story, when he uses it, it's the baging that he doesn't want to die that changes to the baging that he wants to die, which somehow reminds me of Charlie's Inferno. My favourite about them are the endings, in Charlie when he falls into the black abyss and in TERRIBLE THINGS when everything turns red as his world crumbles to pieces, I'll be honest, the TERRIBLE THINGS part kinda made me lose some tears the first time I heard it, but I'm also kinda sentimental so...

What these four songs have in common is that they’re all goblin-core. Because they make me feel like a little goblin while listening to them.

I figure that we'll just be able to put anything in " "s after the word Pan, and it'll be a canon name at some point.

you have got to listen to jhariah they are the coolest ever. start w his newer stuff, his first album is a bit less polished/professional-sounding (still really really good just may be a bit of an acquired taste)
if you want specific song recs, flight of the crows, debt collector, and their newest single collarbone/pin-eye are great places to start :D
Also while miracle musical isnt Technically tally hall, it was made by multiple of its members and us tally hall enjoyers generally tend to include other songs by the band members in the wider tallyhall-verse. iirc after the band went inactive pretty much every member went on to work on their own solo stuff (while also often collaborating w other band members.) fun fact, rob cantor works making music for disney! Theres a playlist somewhere on yt that includes every song by one or more of the band members, i believe its called "every tally hall song known to man"

    • @Pan.Gaming

Jhariah was actually a (fairly) recent addition to my collection!
CZcams recommended me Debt Collector, and you know I have to listen to a song called that. And, I was hooked from there!
I actually used "Risk, Risk, Risk!" when I was making montages, before I swapped to video essays. (It's called "SAVE, SAVE, SAVE! (a kai goalie montage)" if you're looking for it)
My current favorites from him have to be "Flight of the Crows" and "Needed a Change of Pace"
Oh, and, thanks for the info on Miracle Musical! Hawaii: Part II is just in such a weird spot, I guess.

i've been subscribed to chonny for about two years now, and i've been kind of proud of him to see how much he's grown as an artists, but i admit i haven't listened to much of his more recent music. thanks for the positive review, i've gotta go check him out again!
