I Built a HIGH SPEED Monorail for FAST Inter-Island Travel! (Scrap Mechanic Survival Ep. 7)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey hey hi HI HEY HAY long time no see! Sorry I've been away, everyone. The IMPORTANT thing is that I'm back and I will be uploading Scrap Mechanic more often :) A LOT happened in this episode, so really you should just watch it :P Hope you don't hate me for the super long video! Let's just say the whole experience was a learning one, and it took a bit of struggle to finish this project. I had every problem imaginable building this monorail but I also had a blast doing it!
Thanks for watching the video! If you enjoyed it, make sure to like it, share it with your friends and give me your feedback in the comments below!

About Scrap Mechanic:
Scrap Mechanic is an all-new creative multiplayer sandbox game which drops you right into a world where you quite literally engineer your own adventures! Choose from the 100+ building parts you have at your disposal and create anything from crazy transforming vehicles to a house that moves. You’re even able to team up with your friends to create amazing things together: in Scrap Mechanic, you’re the master creator of anything you can imagine!
Here’s the deal: you’re a robot maintenance mechanic en route to your posting on a fully-automated agriculture planet. Your job is to take care of the worker robots as they work the land, sending the food they produce to the metropolitan planets. Thing is, close to touchdown your spacecraft loses control and crashes, but since you’ve got luck on your side (erm…), you survive! You’re stranded though, and at first glance you find that not everything’s quite as it should be. The Farmbots working the fields have gone crazy, and now there’s only one way to stay alive: using your quick thinking, your creativity and your wily knack of turning your surroundings to your advantage.

HOLY COW I didn't realize this was a 50 min video....until I was almost done... right on
I didn’t realize until I clicked on it and saw this in the comments right away 😂
Wow thats very long!
haha I’m so sorry! Totally by accident
@@darealkosmo no man. I love it 😆
I didn’t know until I read your comment
Here are some tips (hope this helps):
- To prevent buildings from flying out, place a nice thicc chunk of blocks below the ground, so it's like anchoring
- To move glowbugs faster, place them far on the ground and then pick them up as you go, same for chests
- To make buildings less laggy, split them into sections which are not touching each other
I learned this from other people's videos.
Great content, as always.
My tip is to watch scrapman videos to learn troubleshooting stuff. Lol.
haha wish I had the time to watch other people's videos!
Thanks for the tips, Ivan! Definitely going to reinforce my rail supports.
TIPS FOR NO FALL DAMAGE
TIP 1: if you want to jump from a building and take no health damage just jump in a seat or toilet or whatever from the building's edge or corner and enjoy the ride.
TIP 2: put your vehicle right next to the building that you're trying to farm or whatever and when you're done with farming or whatever XD just find your car and jump from the building onto your car/vehicle/build and spam E as fast as you can while falling to get in the seat
TIP 3: apparently Haystacks absorbs the fall damage so if you have a couple or more on your car just jump right on top of them cuz they basically like a cushion
Scrapman tip of the month
awesome, thank you!
Just add slices of another material every now and then in the rail (or even paint might do). Long collision shapes act very glitchy, so you need to make the game divide up the rail into shorter collision sections by having a change in material or color. It's probably a floating point thing.
that's what I ended up doing and it seems to have worked! update in the next video :) thank you!
Great stuff! Thanks for featuring our music!
Thank YOU for letting creators use it! I heard the Roll Over Elton! track and new I'd be using it in a video soon :)
Cool
Raid spawns only on land, between 50 to 200 blocks from you farm in a circle from the timer location, but a single layer of blocks above the land can prevent the spawn. Keep the island as a long term project!
Thanks Mark! That's a good call, I think I will. In the meantime I can farm on my base.
Three options. 1. Take off the switch and connect the engine directly to the seat. 2. Two controllers one of forward and one for backwards on switches. 3. Controller linked to the seat and control it that way. I'd check out the way Kan did his wall turret to try and find ways to make it less glitchy.
thanks dude! I appreciate the tips!! Keeping a list of notes for improving this thing haha.
@@darealkosmo Literally same. I have a whole playlist and composite notebook dedicated to Scrap Mechanic
Hey Kosmo, loving the series! for your monorail you should try making the wheels on top free spinning and add some powered wheels pressing against the sides, I did that on mine and it works very smoothly. Also you should add a couple of ground anchors spaced out along the line, things tend to fall through the world if the anchor points are out of render distance. Hope you keep it up buddy!
I made one far longer than yours. I found that splitting the bar into multiple sections helps significantly with frame rate and with glitching into the bar. For the length of yours, 4 or 5 seperated pieces would do it
I've got to say I'm impressed. You might feel like you're way behind every other youtuber, but I've not seen anyone else create a glow bug powered monorail.
It was wonderful to watch you come up with a crazy concept, do testing to verify it appears possible and gradually figure out the process. That moment when the whole rail collapsed I was certain you were going to call Kan in as reinforcements, but you persevered and figured it out yourself.
Please consider doing challenge mode. I'd love to see how you'd do, and it'd give you a really good time spent to youtube content ratio.
Thank you for the comment Altaem! I really appreciate it :) I felt like I had to finish it no matter what kept getting in the way!
I will certainly consider challenge mode to mix it up a little :)
On my farm I have a watering vehicle that sits in top of single wide rails on either side. I found the guide wheels made it pop off the rails all the time, so I switched to glass guiding tracks, as well as switching the rails to glass. The friction is low enough that the glass blocks will slide against each other but the tires are still able to drive it. Maybe something like that could work for you.
I have the water container and pump lower down to the water on pistons.
Sweet, thanks for the tip man! What tier glass is it?
@@darealkosmo Just a regular glass block.
My guess is the jerking is due to the wood blocks rubbing against your rail. I made a few prototypes after watching your video and my favorite was one that uses 4 free spinning wheels on the top corners to hold the gondola on the rail with a vertical free spinning pipe piece on each corner to keep it centered and a free spinning pipe on the bottom of each corner to keep it held on the rail. Then I made a pair of powered wheels on top with a bearing and a piston on separate switches to allow me to rotate the drive train 180° so it could go both ways.
And just in case my description was as clear as mud, here you go:
steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2170459922
Nice one, Ang! I dig the rotating drivetrain. I'm going to snag that workshop file and take a closer look. I've been reading the comments and making improvements to mine based on those and based on what I already knew needed to be changed. Thank you!!
I like your "bad jokes", man!
glad someone does!
36:20 the anchor point of this monorail went out of render distance, so game decided it's not connected to the ground anymore.
THIS! gotta set anchor points every once in a while otherwise its gonna fall.
d'oh! Well, I think it's okay now...I have it secured on both tiles...I guess we will see if it happens again!
Its old glitch i think. When you build something that is too long it starts to glitch and wheels falls in it and then the rail pushes them out of itself. To fix this in mine world where I build giant monorail accross big chunk of a map I separated rail in 256 block sections
опа, неплохой совет! Если будет продолжать ломаться то зделаю точно также, разделю и добавлю опоры.
Kosmo your channel has really grown since I subscribed from 2k to 17k soon you’ll have almost 30k
Closer to 30 than to 0 :D Thanks for your support man!!
Kosmo you deserve 100,000,000 subscribers and you can only thank yourself for making this channel in the first place
Use a driver seat so you can go forward and backward. No need for extra gears.
*facepalm* thanks haha!
@@darealkosmo hahahahha
Kosmo: 12:40 "So we can do this Humanely"
Also Kosmo: plans to force small amphibious bugs to chase food they will never get to move a 400 lbs metal box.
It’s not like we did anything different with horses and carriages.
i mean we do it with pigs in minecraft
I think suspension on the wheels of the gondola might help keep it in touch with the rail, might get it all messed up, but it can help, you never know with scrap mechanic
haha right? never know 'till you try and fail xD
I wish I saw this video sooner but, to make a working smooth gondola system, you need to make 1 block holes separated by about 7 blocks throughout the whole rail. That is also the case for train tracks.
Use suspension and wheel on the side to grip and stabilize gondola to the rail. Suspension on the side also can make the gondola turn so you don't need to have straight rail.
When you leave "your" tile in SM everything you have built disappears (most likely to prevent lag) so suddenly the game thinks that your rail is not supported by anything and it falls. I think if you add supports every so often the problem would go away.
Also instead of double bearings why not just use W and S on the motor?
because it was late and I wasn't thinking clearly! hahaha. Can't believed I forgot I can just use W and S *facepalm* Thanks man :)
That reminds me of a comic i saw in an old magazine where two guys were using an overly complex contraption that took up the entire page just to open a bottle (i think. It's been a while lol). Why do it the easy way when you can do it more difficult!
Your ankerpoint despawned, happend with my bridge, and it gets jumpy so i cut my bridge into sections and ankerd them seperate.
Nice gondala maybe if you add wheels on the bottom of the rail and add some suspension it might stop getting caught
Also maybe flip how the gondala door opens and cut out the dock so the door is the walk way to the seat 😉👍
Another epic vid kosmo glad your growing well and the content is always epic in some way lol
:D Thanks Apitamy!! Some good tips there, definitely going to rework the gondola before next video to show the improvements.
So if you have a small island and plot the whole island, bots won’t spawn there. Also if you drag the blocks into the ground as far as you can it’s fixed to the map then.
Good to know! Maybe I'll build some structures on that island.
Kosmo, you just survived the fall cause you regenerated health when you hit the ground. :p
He literally regenerated health while taking damage, after when the game set how much damage he must take, and before he finished taking all that damage.
Every building desponds at a certain distance
Like so he can see or repost also if you don't feed the glow bugs they die
It keeps glitching because wood blocks have bigger friction than wheels, pipe. Build wooden pillars 1 block further from monorail, so they don't touch rail. And gas motor are faster, or bearing movement, 1 lvl 5 controller and 10 bearings, 5 on each side, 360 degree loop. It is free movement, you just need like 20 komponent kits to make it.
I was thinking about trying to make a high speed rail for travel in this game.
It seems there is by default small island with single tree near each packing station, ideal for small farm. Very easy to defend.
You had one of those near your base. Bots will mostly ignore other structures when raiding.
Possible improvements - instead of 2 sets wheels on opposite sides of the track, try 1 set in the direct middle? Also you could make the track taller (thicker) so your side-bracing works better? I think a lighter gondola would also help; since you have a seat all you really need is a basic frame rather than being fully enclosed. Also, suspension on the wheels might help.
I wonder if survival has low-friction blocks.. if so it might work better to have blocks built on all sides of the track that just glide. It's never going to be super smooth, but. Maybe rolling pipe pieces? Iono, I know wheels have always been slightly glitchy.
*takes detailed notes* haha thank you man! Useful info, I'll be improving the gondola tonight!
@@darealkosmo Happy to help. :)
Flip the track 180, and have the top wheels running horizontally instead of vertically. Under the track rin some guides made up of pipe attached to free spinning bearings.
I have seen a video where someone built a farm on top of a mountain. He prevented mobspawning there by placing random farmplots. Not quite sure if he put seeds in them and can't remember the name. The area was pretty big. The bots spawned next to the montain. Maybe you could give that a try with the island. Also nice gondola, lot's of inspiration! I hope you will improve it! Btw, I have seen an automated monorail builder on reddit. No idea how reliable it is. But I guess pretty usefull if you don't forget to add pillars =)
Solutions ;
1. Pistons pushing it
2. Distance the supports holding the wheels
Thank you Karol! Will definitely try spacing the supports out.
@@darealkosmo Because when I tried to do it it would get stuck and when I spaced it actually worked
That raid was way smaller than it should have been because you actually had 2 raids at once. If you put it in the center of the island it makes them try to spawn in the water and maybe at worst you get greenies, but no haybots. Don’t forget to feed the animals or they explode. Also, why not just connect the motor to your seat and use it for both directions?
Thanks for the tips man! I think I'll eventually figure out a way to farm on that island as per your guys' tips :)
Good call on the the driver seat...I was too tired to realize that was an option haha!
Dope music
Will putting a couple wheels under the track on the middle of the track on the front and back side help keep it from bouncing?
I feel like the rail should be flipped the other way around. Then the wheels will be kept centered. And for the glitching, you should make sure that you put blocks super deep into the ground so it doesn’t freak out
noted. I appreciate the tips yo!
37:44
The rail: "Oops, I did it again!"
Rail collapsed because chunk where it was welded to the ground has been unloaded.
It's happen to me when i build long water pipe transport and it falls down.
I suggest building supports every 128 blocks.
35:40 Render distance is a problem for long builds.
Dude you deserve more subscribers and nice colour choice btw
I love the content! It would be cool to see more sms videos!
I'm on it! Already working on the next one :)
Kosmonaut I’m new to the channel and I already love it and subbed!
@@pixelyz7792 Thank you! I appreciate that yo :) Just finished grinding 6 hours for the next video, see ya there ;)
very long time ago when i played with a friend i made a farm on a really small island where bots couldnt spawn we farmed everything to get off the island and get on the mainland i made 2 catapults one to get on the island and one to get off the catapults wouldnt cause ragdoll or damage since it was the earlydays when fall damage was broken
cool! that sounds like a fun world :)
You could use a controller to move. That is also free energy and works like a charm.
Kosmo great content keep it up your videos are rely entertaining and fun keep it up
Thank you Ignacio!
Instead of using pipes to brace the monorail and tires to hang from, use a combination of pistons, springs and tires to grip the sides. That should help with the collision glitches you were experiencing and hopefully help go a bit faster.
try to cover the whole island in blocks so they don't spawn
you could use drills to help keep it aligned and create less friction to help with speed
Hey to make sure the rail dosnt pop out of the ground drag a little big of wood under the map connected to the dock and ur problem should be fixed
I think the glowbugs fall through built components like cows do. I tried making a boat powered by them and they fall out a lot or randomly die (forgot the reason). Think l saw someone say wielding tree logs together might keep animals from falling through. Also, if you want a raid free farm, climb the big mountain behind the trader guy and bots don't spawn there, only a few can climb one side and one walls keeps them away :)
Hey Kosmo! I absolutely love your videos! The atmosphere, your editing, the music and your talking. And your creative ideas as well, very original! Also, I like learning of it! 😎
connect the top wheels, so there are 2 on top and add wheels on the underside instead of the pipe peaces. this will make it smoother
Some bots can't get across the water. Unfortunately, they're not the ones that pose the greatest threat. I'll give you this bit of info; Totebots can and will swim. Haybots flounder but won't die to water. Tapebots will yeet their tape rolls with their same cheat accuracy across that expanse if forced to. And finally, Farmbots sink, but they're like honey badgers in that sense. They really don't give a f*** that they're submerged and will charge at you and fire chemicals at you from the depths. The only thing keeping them from mauling you at that point is the extreme underwater topography. Most islands and shores have a very steep "hill/ledge" up to them from the bottom of the ocean/lakes, so once they're down there, they'll just spam their chemical launcher at you until you take them out or leave their aggro range.
Also, if you farm on an island, usually the game will spawn raids on that same island depending on how far it is from mainland. But you'll be able to limit the impact of lower level raids, but higher level raids will become difficult as you'll be battling the water as much as the bots are.
BTW, did you drink your sunshake before jumping off at 3:37? If you did, that might explain your miraculous survival. Sunshakes give a certain health regen boost. If you watch the replay closely, you do die, but then you gain about 10-ish health back about a second after and you continue to gain health for a little while after that. I believe, if you had drank the sunshake, that you still had the regen perk going and that it "revived" you.
Did you need to write an essay to get this point across?
I ran into a game breaking bug. The chem container once full disappears and gets you stuck in "carry state" where you can't carry anything and consume water faster. Might happen with water container too.
oh no! Have you tweeted this to the devs? They might be interested to know.
IDEA build a flatbed monorail so you can transport vehicles from the mainland to the island by making a second rail and a platform with 4 rail pods on it one in each corner so it can take all the weight that you put on it
love the video. only suggestion is to slow down the areas that you speed up. I get the compression but it's a little too fast. great job
Use a single wheel twice on top that connects to both sides, one wheel in front and rear underneath. Hopefully more stable that way.
This is a good project
Looks nice xD
Thank you!! :)
I love his laugh
When he said can I eat it when he picked up the glow (poop) Hahaha:) :()
I ran into the same problems with a monorail, no matter what i did there was imaginary bumps on the rail, I could rebuild it or move it to fix them, but it will always come back.
You don't need double bearing for reverse. Just use a driver's seat and then W and S to move forward and back.
Yea
I wonder if there could be a way to have turns in the monorail?
i have bin doing this since week 1 ...the bots in the building re spawn but dont come down and the one under will respond but most of the time wont attack your stuff...
It is a glow bug cuz it has three body segments entenea and six legs and compound eyes eyes mad of tiny eyes
Nice video Kosmo, I like how big your base is, I think I built mine too small.
Thanks Sam! It's all good, you can always expand it with platforms or build a secondary wall a bit further away. It would be cool to see what other people's world's look like!
Kosmonaut Kosmo I have always be afraid how Scrap Mechanic getting boring for me in the furtive so I should make the most of it now
congrats for this video this is now your most viewed video hehe
16 minutes in and I notice the time, then do a little dance, then back to the video.
haha!
High speed monorail
Fast inter-land travel
two points
1. controller power
2. use a wheel on each end with a shock pushing up on the beam. it should stabilize the whole thing
Stand waist deep in water and you can spam bucket at an ok range.
Jump just before solo haybot hits and you can dodge 70% of attacks.
I guessed it right awesome. Btw keep up the great vids
Thank you Delta! :) Yep ya got it right!
Monorail really said: VRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRM
A quick tip, you can get rid of the stumps by hitting them with your hammer.
good to know! Thank you!
I think you just need the supports holding your wheels to be like a block away from the rail i think they are hitting it and making it glitchy
I'll give it a try!! Working on improvements right now :)
Kosmo add guide rails above it to perevent flying when reaching high speeds
I do the same monorail yesterday (this problem are awful)
I never knew that you know of Sum 41.
OMG U HAVE THE SAME MAP AS I DO AND THE LOOT ISLAND IS WHERE I PUT MY BASE sadly i delete it by accident :(
How do you delete a world by accident
Oh really..
@@TURPEG happened to me before, the delete button is so close to the play world button
filling the entire building with blocks might crush them instantly when they spawn.....quotes,might
your videos im new to them there rely good
you could make the seat a drivers seat so that you can use a reverse
Kosmo instead of the botton use the driver seat so you can reverse
👍
Is nice
haha such a huge oversight on my part! Thanks :) Glad I got you guys hahaha
If that was your first time farming where did you get all the banana and blueberry seeds?
I think he meant it was his time farming with raid. Also he could find those seeds in loot crates.
from loot crates in buildings :)
Coool
Kosmo, you wont get a smooth ride, quite a few youtubers have tried and its simply impossible, something about the game will not let you do long lengths of rail and get a smooth ride, no matter how you make it or what you do, its just one of Scrap Mechanics wonderful things :/
ah dang, well, I can try to get it as smooth as I can, and the rest I'll just have to live with :) Thanks for the comment woody!
@@darealkosmo no problem, all the best with it!
you could have converted your metal to extruded metal to stretch your materials farther for the track
Sometimes just take the day slow you don't need a bunch of stuff on one day that is what makes holes in a boat
@Computer Boy ha ha ha
@Computer Boy meta-for it means don't rush
hey em if you gonna remove that down layer of glass on that cage they probably gonna care about ithat carbord and they dont gonna die
You have to feed them so they dont die
Name the glowbugs Harry and Gary.
he could of use the controller for free power.
He could even make a very big gear and make some holes in the bottom part of the rail (the vertical bottom of the T rail), and use a level 1 controller with a big wheel to move fast and cheap.
Pro tip - if you tab out of sm while holding w you will keep walking. It works for all keys
also if your walking/sprinting, and you just hit enter to text, then hit enter again you still keep walking/sprinting and you can turn wial its auto running. then to stop just hit sprint or walk backwards.
haha perfect, thank you guys! Hopefully I don't have to hop across the lake too often anymore :P
A good idea was to use rusty metal blocks because you can find lots of them in warehouses they are super cheap
" i dont know how ive gotten by without a farm this long , ive basically have been finding berries and stuff"
FORAGE 100
