Companies across the world are working round-the-clock to find a solution to the year 2,000 computer crash.
But there is at least one country which will not have to worry so much about it.
India - home to top-notch computer engineers - is the world's largest manufacturer of manual typewriters.
Its design has not changed in nearly 150 years.
Today, the manual typewriter continues to dominate Indian desktops, despite years of computer technology.
And, in thousands of offices across the world, the manual typewriter still clacks away thanks largely to Indian manufacturers.
But while the merits of Windows 97 are debated across the globe, the majority of secretarial staff in India struggle to stock enough typewriter ribbon, correcting fluid and carbon paper.
In such developing countries, the typewriter has proven to be far from obsolete.
Endless power cuts make the use of computers unreliable.
    SOUNDBITE: (English)
"This is a country where power is very unreliable. For instance, in some parts of Delhi you can have power cuts in the summer which last ten hours. So if you're having to work as a journalist or anybody else who needs a word processor, then you'd probably be very
grateful for a typewriter which would be reliable and didn't require power. You'd probably need a candle with it though too."
SUPER CAPTION: Mark Nicholson, Financial Times of London
India produces 90-thousand typewriters each year.
About a third of those are exported to other developing countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
It is probably not surprising to know that typewriter sales worldwide are decreasing slightly each year due to competition from computers.
To avoid losses, manufacturers like India's Godrej company scale back production by five percent annually.
Still, the company estimates that manual typewriters will be around for at least another 50 years.
    SOUNDBITE: (English)
"All said and done, typewriter is cheapest mode of communicating. And again, typewriter once bought will last for 25 years. So a person using a typewriter is more at ease as far as regular expenses are concerned."
SUPER CAPTION: H.N. Patel, Manager, Godrej Typewriters
It is not just lower costs that draw people to typewriters.
Typing remains a sought-after skill amongst Indian youth.
Many of these students hope good typing skills will open the door for admission into an up and coming computer institute or a good job.
After all, typewriters outnumber computers in India 300 to one.
    SOUNDBITE: (Marathi)
"I think typing is still useful for women especially. Typing skills can get a steady job in any government school or office. And someday, maybe I'll get a computer job."
    SUPERCAPTION: Sujata Dhorkar, Typing student
Invented in 1867, the typewriter changed the way words were written forever.
Today, the typewritten word still keeps societies like India chugging forward.
At roadside shops all over the country, customers queue to have deeds, letters, wills and advertisements typed out professionally.
    Of course there's no spell-check.
    And it's not laser quality.
But with a little elbow grease and strong fingers, these typists ensure the job gets done.

A personal observation: most all typewriters I’ve seen here have long carriages. I guess most or all the intended typing is legal work. Some carriages on these machines seen in different threads are so big they need outriggers on the backs of the typewriters.

Exactly. Never expires, never phones home, doesn't spy on you, never needs updates (except maintenance and a fresh ink ribbon)

If they're referencing the worry about the year 2000 computer crash, I'm thinking late 90s. That crash never happened, but you never know what the 2020s will bring, we've had some whacky stuff happening already, so why not a very belated computer or internet crash? Nothing would surprise us right now.
