    The actor who played Gort was Lock Martin. He had several other movie roles, all as big guys in fantasy type films. He was the doorman at Grauman's Chinese Theater. He love together children around him and read stories. As with many who suffer from excessive height disorder, he was neither strong nor long-lived. In the scene where Gort carried Patricia Neal, overhead wires attach to the armor where used to help hold up Mr. Martin's arms. Wearing the costume was an ordeal; Mr. Martin sweated profusely inside the costume, especially during Klaatu's last speech. And, sadly, Mr. Martin passed away when he was only 42 years old. May the worthy gentleman rest in peace.

      As I recall, the suit was all rubber, so definitely anyone would poach inside that thing in short order. I think they applied aluminum paint. I suppose rubber was chosen to go with the concept of the alien technology having no visible seams. What else in 1950 could look seamless, not crease and still be rigid enough to appear to be of metal? When I was a kid I always wondered what that robot was made of.

      Quite right. One can notice the sort of dimples, or folds, forming at the elbows and behind the knees, when Gort is walking or carrying someone.

    Producer Julian Blaustein in the six-part “making of” documentary claims that actor Lock Martin’s head only came up to the top of the shoulders of the costume, but that was an exaggeration (you can see the skull cap inside this helmet). Look at any scene where Gort is in movement... if Blaustein was correct, the arms and armpits would be unnaturally low. Martin was 7’7” tall. His boots were lifted about 4” and the helmet likely added another 3”, making the overall height 8’2”... roughly ceiling height in a typical house.

    • @Lumibear.
      @Lumibear. Před 3 lety +1

      Yes I agree, his head wasn’t ‘in the shoulders’, it’s more just that his head didn’t fit right inside the helmet as it’s clearly much bigger than a human head. He had a clear or raised visor for some scenes from the back (you occasionally catch it as he turns) in order to see, and felt his way around blind/followed vocal instructions when filmed from the front (watch his hands when he enters the ship). I think it’s possible he could see down a little, but he definitely isn’t looking from the shoulders.
      Also, there are clearly multiple helmets, because one was a mechanical puppet insert with a motorised visor, one was part of the full scale model used as his motionless stand-in, and the one Lock wore, and you can see little differences in all of them such as the holes in the chin (check out his initial walk down the ramp, vs when the helmet raises).
      I do think this is likely to be the actors helmet, though, which is pretty darned awesome.

    On a documentary of the day the earth stood still of 6 parts. The actor inside the suit stood on 6" shoes but that was still not tall enough. His head inside the suit came up to the shoulders of the robot and he would look thru a prism to see out the head piece.

      +Bobby Friend I'm also a fan of Gort Bobby. I have been searching a short lived tv series that Gort was in. He was modified slightly with a few add ons. I think it may have been an attempt to extend the expensive costume. Much like Robby and Tobor. Tobor being in a unsold Tv pilot after his debut movie Tobor The Great.

    I have read that in some scenes there was a transparent visor to help Mr. Martin see where he was going. the transparent visor can be seen in one scene when Gort brings Patricia Neal into the saucer. after he turns away from the virwscreen, the transparent visor can be seen inside profile.
