    If you don't understand what people say, don't be shy to ask them. They understand that English is not your native language and will be happy to repeat what they said or rephrase it. I remember when I came to England, I though that each person had their own dialect. Sometimes it still takes time for me to get used to some people's way of talking. Thanks for the update and I hope you are having a great time!

      Yeah, totally acceptable to ask! It's crazy how different dialects can be. I'm from California. When I visited southwest England, sometimes I couldn't understand entire sentences!

    Thank you for making these conversational videos. I’m focusing much more on these types of videos to grammar videos, because once people speak naturally like natives, they start breaking grammar rules all the time.

    I think your advice to listen to native speakers talk with other native speakers is excellent. I follow several Japanese vloggers that do things I'm already interested in. They workout, are into nutrition, they climb, they travel, etc. Basically anything I'm interested in. I combine that with slower, more focused education content (like your videos!). I only understand about 10% of what's being said, but that's up from 0%! I also never slow vlogger content down (though I may re-watch a video), I've found it helps me to be more comfortable with the speed and cadence of words when spoken naturally. Plus I get excited when I DO recognize a word, or phrase or kinda understand what's happening and what's being said. Love your videos! Keep up the great work!!

      Thank you for your comment!! Yes, it's very important to expose yourself to different people's Japanese. People use different vocabs, and speak with different speed, and even the tone of voice influences how easy it is for you to understand the speaker. So I think you are on the right path! You can do it! この調子(ちょうし)で頑張ってね!

    Thanks for focusing on two natives talking to each other. I've also realized this too, where one-on-one speaking is more or less okay, but listening to Japanese people talk to each other is very difficult. As an intermediate learner who is more interested primarily with communication and not test scores, I find real life conversations more practical to learn from and get used to than the perfectly pronounced, perfectly used grammar dialogue like you see in dramas and news reports. Keep up the good work!

    • @mikurealjapanese
      @mikurealjapanese Před 7 měsíci +7

      Thank you for your comment! Yes! I totally understand it like I said in the video, I also panic when native speakers use a loy of slangs and speak super fast between them haha But I listen to podcast where native English speakers discuss things with natural speed quite often, so I got used to it little by little! But it still happens! So I feel you haha I will keep on making content for people like you who are serious about learning how to actually talk and connect with Japanese people! Thank you for supporting me! :)

    Thank you Miku sensei for yet another great video, and I particularly appreciate the English subtitles, they are so helpful for studying (and I know how much work it takes to make them!).
    About understanding native speech, a good trick is to listen to sped up audio (youtube, podcasts etc.), which sounds counterintuitive, but once you get used to listening to everything on x2 it never feels like anyone is speaking too fast in real life lol. Will try the same technique with Japanese when I reach a sufficiently high level.

      @@mikurealjapanese I personally wouldn't do that with tv shows or movies because that just would spoil the enjoyment lol (unless you rewatch it after first seeing it in normal speed). I think it works the best with things like podcasts, documentaries, news shows etc., things that are meant to convey information rather than tell a story. But that's up to you because the most important thing is to watch content that you enjoy!

    I'm glad you're enjoying your visit to the US. There are a lot of different accents even in the same place. As a native speaker of English, living my whole life in the US, there are many times where I have trouble understanding another native English speaker. I live in the Midwest now, which is the standard 'dialect' for most news and television, so it tends to be easier. Enjoy your trip!

    I admire your bravery for visiting someplace like the US, which has so many different kinds of people all over the place. The thing with English in the States is that, since there are so many different people who usually come from different cultures/countries, there are just as many different accents and word usages in the English that is used between everyday people (Not helpfully sorted or labeled like it is on the internet).
    Someone who primarily speaks Spanish will speak English with a different inflection on the words, or they may use words that are partially Spanish and partially English (Easy for a native of either language to intuitively know, but difficult for anyone outside of those languages to figure out just by context or the root meanings of the word), or they may swap between English and Spanish frequently... yeah! It's definitely not easy for people from linguistically homogeneous countries to visit places that are significantly diverse in an everyday sense.
    If all goes well, I plan to visit Japan next year, but I'm not confident in my Japanese skills, so I'll lurk on channels like you and hope to learn something.
