Thanks so much for this review! I do off trail exploring and this video sealed the deal that this is perfect for my use case!
Works great on a bike, quad or sled too. I used to run the fortrex 201 on my dual sport bike in the summer and on my snowmobile in the winter
Excellent dive into the 801. I've been in the market for something in the foretrex series and thought about going with the 601 but your review makes some great points. I'll have to rethink now.
Thanks
Nathan
I hear the 601 is great too. But theb801 has the better multi band for accuracy and better battery life that's why I went 801. And the monochromatic screen is outstanding.
Great video, just bought mine from the base exchange to use out on field ops in the Mojave. Thanks for showing how to use it, looks like I bought the right one!
Definitely great tips!… Always have a secondary source of navigation for long trekking.
Great video…. I am just asking wifey for the Foretrex 801 for Christmas. Spent last 30 years without ever using a gps, but you just sold me on this one. 😎
What a fantastic and timely vid, Jason. I've been looking to get a reliable and simple to use GPS for some time now. For a hunting GPS all I need is to mark a truck or camp, deer sign and maybe a few breadcrumb trails. That's really about it. Most people also aren't walking anymore than 10 miles in a day. I find many GPS units archaic, difficult to use and relatively time consuming. I like your GPS recommendation here. I'm also thinking of picking up the newer Garmin cheap "Yellow" units as well as a backup. I guess the batteries last a long time on the black & white Yellow units.
Agree 100% GPS units are so far behind the times compared to cell phones. So I use onx for almost everything. But a GPS is a great back up and a great precision tool for those exact spots and for grid searching. So I want quick simple and accurate. Don't need all the other stuff they do.
After 35 years in the Army my only compass is my Conega military compass. But I love my Garmin Etrex 20. I have never really liked GPS compasses. They don’t work well unless your moving. It would be interesting to research. In SD I use my On X hunting maps for public land not so much for navigation. Use to be that the only satellites you had were the US ones for civilian use but the problem was that that we launched the satellites for around the Equator but the Russians launched their defense satellites but allowed civilians to use their channels but the Russians launched for the Northern hemisphere. So if you can access both sets of satellites you error position error went from 400-500 ft to a mere 2-3ft. I lived in AK at the time and it made using GPS up there very reliable.
Yep my compass is my main tool too. But sure do love have the security of this running in my pack
@@tradbowpodcastboth of you need to do a-lot of reading. about using a gps. i have the etrex 30x ,22x and a 10. they are insanely accurate. i got my 22x ,(craigslist $100). and my etrex 10 off ebay $60. again learn how to use a gps.
Crazy... I was just searching these up... It must be a sign!! 😂 Good info
When i got mine
I also got a new screen saver like a cellphone off of Amazon for $7
So on the 801 it has gps map coordinates/ satellite location 1 and 2 which one do I use to give my position to someone in emergency if needed to do so thank you for all your help and a great video
Headband
I've got a 64st, which has better reception in valleys surrounded by mountains compared to my older e-trex unit. I'm wondering how good the reception is with this thing in heavy cover compared to the 64?
Considering buying this GPS. Garmin Specs says it can do Area Calculation, but I can't see anything anywhere on the manual about it. Maybe in track details? Area calculator is a very interesting extra as most people in my family are farmers.
Never tried it or seen how area Calc works. Sorry couldn't help with that one. And I'm not home right now to mess with it and see.
the 701 was my first gps. I bought a few years ago. still havent' used it enough to know how to use it. i really need a good guide.
There are some great tutorials on youtube that show exactly what each button does
Jason good video, how you making out with your string tracker?
I can't use it much yet as I'm still hunting for hogs. The string tracker requires an arrow on the string and the string would get all tangled in brush walking. Once deer season is here and I'm sitting in a stand I will be using it much more
Can you import a Wma pdf map so that it’s visible as you navigate? I’ve been doing this with the etrex 20 and the 32 can do it too. Thx in advance
No. Not that I'm aware of. I used to do that with my 32 and my 64 also. But now I have onx on my phone for that. This unit is about simple, light and accurate. A perfect backup to get you out, and a super accurate grid searching tool.
Can you record and choose activities via this 801? For example hike, boat, run?
Great video Jason. I have a Foretrex 401 from my military days. One drawback I have is that I need to calibrate the compass every single time I turn it on in order to get pinpoint accuracy, such as getting to a specific tree in the dark. Have you had this experience with the 801 or can you simply turn it on, enter your waypoint, and get to exactly where you need to go in the dark without issues?
Whenever I forgot to calibrate the compass before stepping off, it would never be able to take me exactly to my tree; it would have me going circles around the general area which would be frustrating. Thank you!
Didn't they tell you it was hot in Georgia?
It's hot here in Pennsylvania as well.
Do you think you'll miss the Michigan autumns?
🤣🤣 definitely warm here! I will miss the deer numbers up there and the simplicity of hunting there. But I will get my autumn fix when I spend 3 weeks of November hunting 3 Midwest states.
I'd love to know how long of a distance I can track.can I walk and track the whole AT trail? This question has never been answered anywhere I ask it plz let me kno
Don't see why it wouldn't. Sometimes I forget to turn mine off and will drive 2 hours home from hunting area and still only used like 20% of the tracking log space.
can we have UTM and MGRS coordinates on a widget or on its screen?
Not sure. There are many ways you can change all the widgets and what's on the pages.
I have the old 301, if that can display both (which it does) the 801 should be able to.
Does this have mgrs/utm capabilities?
Why not one of the inreach versions?
Hear those are good too. This is super accurate, super simple, and super small with absolutely amazing battery life. That's all I need.
GLONAS, GALILEO, BEIDOU ARE DIFFERENT COUNTRIES CONSTELATIONS OF GPS.
What is GPS mode?
not sure what you mean. Will have to dig it out and look at that to see what it is or does. Gps mode is not ringing a bell for me.
HELLO, MY WINDOWS 10 PC DOES NOT RECOGNIZE FORETREX 801, IT DOES NOT APPEAR AS A STORAGE DEVICE.
WITH THE EXPLORE APK, IT WORKS PERFECTLY.
ANY IDEA TO FIX THE PROBLEM?
I DO NOT HAVE A BACKUP OF THE DEVICE, I DON'T KNOW IF WITH ANOTHER LOWER WINDOWS I WOULD DETECT IT, SUGGESTIONS ARE ACCEPTED, THANK YOU.
I'm having the same problem, did you figure out how to solve it? I'll get in contact with garmin support today.

Appreciate your vid!
but man, cover up that location properly
Thank you! I have a Foretrex 801 and this is so helpful for discovering more of its features.
Glad you enjoyed it
