We turned Calico Skies into a Slutter (aka sloop/cutter, solent rig) (Calico Skies Sailing, Ep 74)
VloĆŸit
- Äas pĆidĂĄn 4. 07. 2024
- This episode opens with Calico Skies completing a short hop over to Brimstone Island. Brimstone is located about 3nm miles south of Vinalhaven and is a geologists dream. The beaches are littered with perfectly round, smooth black stones. We hike to the high point of the island and are treated with beautiful views below as fog rolls over our boats. We are pumped to have three other TTYC members (Delos, Ada, Avalon) joining us here in Brimstone Island.
We wake up the next morning in dense fog as we prepare to move Calico Skies over to Seal Cove seeking 360 degree protection for the next front coming through. Luckily the fog clears as get underway and by the time we arrive to Seal Cove the weather is sunny and calm. We decide to setup our new staysail in the fair, calm weather before the front arrives. We ordered a new staysail from Precision Sails back in November 2019 but due to the pandemic we were unable to take ownership of the sail until late summer. The staysail utilizes our continuous line furler that we have for our code zero. We ordered a second anti torsion cable (AT cable) that we thread through the nifty zipper luff sewn into the staysail. With the staysail rigged we have turned Calico Skies into a slutter đ, otherwise known as a sloop/cutter or a solent rig.
With our chores completed we decide its the perfect weather to go a on a paddle to explore Seal Cove. This relaxing spot quickly becomes one of our favorite anchorages in Maine. We observe a pretty blue heron in one of the tidal pools.

You guys are doing a great job of capturing the natural rugged beauty of Maine's coastlands. Your gentle editing style coupled with good narrative and lovely music make for a wonderful video experience. Thank you for taking the time and energy to share this "gem" of the northeast with the rest of us ! Fair winds and following seas !!
Thanks Jim!! I'm glad you enjoyed it! Some beautiful spots up there đ
Absolutely love your videography, the angles and framing you catch both in the environment and of the boat itself. I've been glued to SV Delos since the pandemic started, and just got on to your channel in the last month or so. Absolutely love your work, both as a companion view to Delos and as a standalone, Bill and Grace, you are hitting the nail on the head. Can't wait to continue to the journey with you both!
Aww thank you very much! Such nice feedback :)
Beautiful scenery that is food for the soul, wish I was there. Thanks for a lovely video.
Thanks! The drone was super fun to fly over that island :)
As always a nice blend of great video, techie sail info and good sounds, resonating with the Maine we know. Thank you.
Our pleasure! Glad you enjoyed it! :) Maine is a spectacular place to film!
Loved your videography-it was so peaceful and calming.
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it, the Maine scenery certainly makes it easy :)
Found you folks through Delos vids. I love your channel! Fair winds and following seas.
Awesome! Thank you! :)
Love it. We go to Boothbay Harbor (Linekin Bay) every summer and it's so beautiful. Glad to see you guys enjoying Maine.
It's a fantastic place to cruise!
Tulas Endless Summer, Taylor's Travel, SV Delos. Wow you are making cameo appearances everywhere.
lol right?! Seems the vlogging community is small :)
MJ Sailing is anchored next us after helping a mutual friend deliver his boat south đ
Loved the music! You are both wonderful! â€ïžđšđŠâ€ïž
Aww thanks đ„°đ„°
Love, love this vid. Thank you again for sharing the beauty of the east coast !!
Thank you :) itâs a truly beautiful place đ„°
CZcams reading my mind again. Would really love to set up our boat with a staysail. Can't figure out where I'd attach the inner forestay. Anyway, have had on a previous boat and loved it. Good video!
CZcams is good at that :) It's awesome to have! It took a bit of engineering to setup. We were lucky that we tackled a revamp of the foredeck when we added a windless. We created a strong G10 shelf, glued and glassed to the underside of the deck to hold the windless. This made a great spot to add an inner stay attachment point. We put two oversized D ring bolted together with the underside ring lashed to a new chainplate attached to the anchor locker bulkhead. We showed the setup of the shelf in EP. 46. We may do a flashback episode for the inner stay attachment.
Yeh thatâs how we did it on the Peterson 46. Chain locker into a full bulkhead. Now weâve got a cat and .....itâs a bit complicated. But Iâve seen it done on a big Voyage, so maybe at some point I can engineer it. Working jibs just should t be reefed too far.
Absolutely Beautiful!
Thanks Glenn!! Check out brimstone on your boat this summer ;)
Very beautiful coastline. Reminds me of my home waters in BC. Just swap the lobster pots for prawn traps and crab pots.
We keep hearing the Pacific Northwest is like Maine, sounds like we have to get there and explore! Maybe a Pacific loop?!
@@CalicoSkiesSailing I've toured Maine a few times by motorcycle and can tell you it looks and feels very much like the BC coast. If you ever make it here i usually have red meat for the BBQ and cold beer on board. it's an open invite.
Very nice, looks a beautiful place for either a boat or land based holiday.
Maine would be a sweet spot to take an RV as well! Easier thank dodging lobster pots đ. Although the remote island we got to made it more than worth it boat!
Beautiful video. Thanks for sharing the adventure. Nice drone shots!
Thanks for watching! Such an epic place to fly the drone!
This is an especially well done video. The instrumental audio track you chose accented the excellent camera work very nicely.
Thanks!
First look at your channel. I immediately noticed the great camera eye you have. The best I've seen, I think. I bought a place on Deer Isle, not to far from Seal Cove. Learning on my Quickstep 24. Some overnights to North Haven and Vinalhaven. Dropped hook in Seal Cove last year due to a tip from a sailor I met in Frenchboro. Had no idea about the wind generators there. But such a beautiful spot. Cheers.
Welcome aboard! Thanks so much for the feedback :) Seal Cove was a super relaxed place to anchor. Just googled the Quickstep 24, looks like a cool boat!
It looks like your subs are going up since i found this channel. Keep up the great work, i love it
Thanks! Yep been going up nicely :)
Lovely
Thank u! And thank u for watching an oldie!! đ
This reminds me so much of my home cruising grounds in the Pacific Northwest.
We would love to check out the Pacific Northwest one day, we have only great things about it! Maybe a Pacific loop?! Where are you based?
@@CalicoSkiesSailing it is rather special. I am based out of Seattle and grew up with my parents on their gulf star 37. We went to Barkley Sound and Desolation Sound which were both amazing. I have chartered up until recently but just bought my first boat of my own a Catalina 34. I am doing a bit of a refit in Anacortes and plan to launch in April May. Until then I will be a youtube armchair captain for a bit longer :-)
@@meestahwah cool! Catalina 34 is a great boat, our good friend had one and we cruised the Bahamas together for a couple seasons! Exciting to get out cruising! It's so exciting planning and starting the adventure!
Love Brimstone. Such an "out there" feeling. You experienced it and captured it well. Thank you. Seal Cove, was it the protected bay in NE Vinalhaven, off Winter Harbor? Lovely spot.
Yep that's exactly where it was, gorgeous spot! Brimstone has an other worldy feel, realy cool! Too bad the weather changed and we could only stay the night!
Nice sail on you SLOOP... đ
Thanks! đđ
Nice drone shots & choice of music!
Thanks! Fun spot to go on a fly with the drone :)

Solent Rig is made out of people!
ahhhhhh!
đ
Smooth black stones = very coarse sand! đ
đ true! Perfect skipping stones!
Bill I have bought one sail so far for Precision - I am gong to add my own stay to be used for hank on for now - I have a Sailrite so I could add my own zipper arrangement in the future - not thinking Precision would be eager to share zipper info - any idea of the size the zipper is rated at or number?
lemme see what I can find :)
How did you run your sheets inside or outside shrouds did you set up new blocks or use your genoa track . Just scribed to channel found you threw delos
Thanks for subscribing! The sheets are run inside the shrouds, We are using our existing , blocks, we have adjustable genoa cars and we pull it way forward.
Great work very interesting- wa there a pad eye on the deck to secure the â sluggerâ inner stay ?
Thanks! We added two large d rings on either side of the shelf we built for our windless last year. The two d rings are bolted together and the underside ring is lashed to chainplate installed on the anchor locker bulkhead with 1/4 in dynemma. We may do a flashback to that install at a later date.
@@CalicoSkiesSailing thanks for that - had a bit of a look back at earlier episodes but couldnât see that particular one- if you have a reference that would be great
We have a beneteau 361 and a cutter arrangement off a furling genniker would be an ideal solution
Keep safe
@@anthonybeck2384 Episode 46 has the install of the shelf we built :)
@@CalicoSkiesSailing with thanks đ
Thats my kinda boat.
Thanks!!
Did you strap the GoPro to the Blue Heron for those final aerial shots of Grace?
maybe đ....one of the first things we did upon getting back to the States was replace the drone we lost in the Bahamas lol
I guess you only raise the stay sail when you plan to use it like the code 0 and attach the continuous line furler to the one to be raised
Yep thatâs correct. Although we have we have a sunbrella cover on it so can keep it raised just for easier storage. If we need the code zero we take it down and swap out the furler
it will be interesting to see how you get on in heavier weather with that, to me that still looks quite big
We had it up in about 30-35 knots true but going downwind, we were using a reefed poled out genoa and staysail on the other side, we were very impressed with how double headsail stabilized the motion of the boat. Haven't tried it upwind in big air yet, although we typically try and avoid that đ. This is what our sailplan looks like now
Head sails
Assym 1100 sq ft
Code Zero 574 sq ft
Genoa 130% 424 sq ft
100% Working 297 sq ft
Staysail 215 sq ft
Main
Full 339 sq ft
Reef 1 232 sq ft
reef 2 144 sq ft
@@CalicoSkiesSailing stabilised, cool I look forward to seeing the video at some stage in the future đđ
@@roycox3701 We get some pretty gnarly rolling in heavy air wing on wing with the main, this configuration is a welcome improvement!
@@CalicoSkiesSailing excellent đ
I thought the name was Scutter and it's for when the smaller jib is in front (ahead) of the Genoa!
Ha never heard of that one! Our staysail is about 3 feet behind the Genoa. We have a code zero on a sprit in front of the Genoa.
I think some Shannons are rigged with the Scutter plan. Wierd in that the bigger jib is aft on some Shannons which seems backwards.
@@svbluehighway That does seem strange! Feel like the whole advantage of a staysail is moving the center or effort down and towards the middle of the boat. Not sure why the would set it up that way. Scutter, learn something new everyday :)
Can you partially furl the staysail with your setup ?
Unfortunately no, the continuous line furlers aren't meant for roller reefing.
Wishful thinking on my part. Enjoying your channel.
@@markpesner4034 Thanks :)
I thought it was a coop rig!
đcould be! slutter has a certain ring to it đ
A Genoa is not a Jib. A jib is not a Genoa. If you talk sailor, please be clear and correct. A Genoa is greater than 100% of the foretriangle, it overlaps the mast. A jib is 100% or less. It barely, or does not, overlap the mast. Slutter is a crude term. You created a double headsail sloop. Which is fine, and often very effective.
Slutter is a recognized term for a solent rig with an additional head stay. Note the stay attaches at mast head different from a cutter.
And a Genoa is a type of jib. It's one of those " not all jobs are genoas, but all genoas are jibs things". Also a Genoa is a sail that was literally introduced in a 1920's race in the city Genova, where the jib was overlapping.
