Transnistria is a rebel republic inside Moldova in the far east of Europe, born from the ashes of the Soviet Union. More than 25 years after a peace agreement was signed in 1992, the self-declared state has not been recognised by a single UN country.
Transnistria acts as if it is independent: it has its own government, military, currency, and national anthem. But 1,500 Russian soldiers are still based there - in fact, it is the only country still proudly displaying the hammer and sickle on its flag. A third of its people are Moldovan, a third Ukrainian and a third Russian, but the majority aspire to be part of Russia, whilst others still wish for closer alignment to Europe and Moldova. Our reporters went to find out more about this land in limbo.

I am from Moldova, and i personally don’t really mind that Transnistria wants to become independent. That’s not a controversial topic for me at all, I would like them to get independence if that’s what they really want. Our government should just give up. The only thing I don’t like or don’t agree with in case if they become independent is that, after the war, they took control of some cities and towns from the right ride of the Dniester river, which are in fact in Moldova, and if they get independence we’d just lose all these cities forever, although they never were part of Transnistria, for example the city of Bender (Tighina).

Man, this has nothing to do with Russians or Russia itself. Only 65 percent of Moldova's population, is actually ethnic Moldovans, the rest are either Russians, Ukrainians or Gagauz. All those groups have been living there for centuries. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, many nations across the Union, were given the right to self determination. Moldova's government decided to become independent without holding a referendum or anything, and of course this led to ethnic tensions. If one nation has a right to self determination, then others should have the same right too. Moldovan government chose to leave the Union, without thinking about the consequences it might bring. The southern region of the former Moldovan SSR, populated mainly by Gagauz, wanted to have their own country. The Ukrainians and Russians across the river Dnestr, didn't like the idea of separating from the Union, because of all the uncertainties (they didn't know, if they would be able to cross the border with Ukraine freely to see their relative, or if the new Moldovan government would recognise their language on a national level and so on). The entire conflict happened due to idiotic nationalistic movements. Lastly, drunk Yeltsin, had no interest in Moldova, in fact he had closed all the foreigner bases outside Russia. Sending a few thousands soldiers to Moldova, helped to prevent a war...
