Today we're going to hit the traffic pattern with a flying lesson, do some takeoffs and landings, and I'll be your Flight instructor (CFI) for the day. Our flight school Cessna 172 is a great little airplane. Great way to commit aviation.
Initially we do a normal takeoff from the runway. Very simple, keeping aligned with centerline, and flying off the runway when we get to the correct airspeed. We track centerline and climb on the way out.
Next we do a normal landing after the initial traffic pattern (where we did the requisite CGUMPS checklist). This approach and landing are stabilized and precise.
Now we do a soft field takeoff. We're trying to keep our nosewheel from hitting a rut, digging in, and hitting our prop. Of course this is not a REAL soft field. But we hold the nosewheel off as we takeoff. Eventually we lift off and then accelerate in ground effect.
Another successful traffic pattern, and now we fly the airplane down to a soft field landing. We land as softly as we can, by keeping a little power in, and keeping pressure off of the nosewheel. Certainly takes some more active flying to make this work well. Aviation done right!
Next is a short field takeoff. This means we have a short distance for takeoff, and maybe even need to climb over an obstacle. We're at a full stop, we hold the brakes, full power, check that we're producing full power, and we lift off as soon as we can, and climb out at Vx. Once over the obstacle, we change the attitude and fly the plane to Vy. Precise flying makes it work best.
Lots of little tips about the traffic pattern along the way.
Now we do a short field landing, where we're trying to stop in a short distance. Rarely do you need to stop that quickly, but these are still techniques you're expected to know as a private pilot.
Next we do a normal takeoff again. No big deal. Just doing the aviation thing!
But now we'll do a power off 180º approach with an accuracy landing. This is a commercial level maneuver, but we're constantly looking at our touchdown point and using a combination of distance, altitude, flaps, speed, etc.
Last landing is a fun one, landing on some gravel. Kinda fun and different, and a much smaller target than all the other landings. This just goes to show that those skills built can pay off on the real thing.

What is the landing YOU struggle with the most? Or takeoff, I guess. Let's start a conversation!

Crosswind landings. Just got through my checkride and my simulated engine out was at an unfamiliar airport with a crosswind. It wasn't pretty!

Hmmmm well I have only flown in a GA plane once.... a C172 and it was amazing. I flew most of the approach but I had a hard time pulling back enough, I flew the approach too slow and the instructor had to grab the yoke and pull it to our chests. But, it all ended well and there was no float--we landed just on the spot I had picked out

@Angle of Attack It really does! Started watching your videos in my early private stage, just finished initial in early October and passed CFII add-on a week ago! Working on MEI now. You have such a great nack for teaching and your videos really helped me dial in my skills, Thank you! Always pre-flight have a solid understanding of visual flying vs. instrument flying always be safe and consistent in how you go about it and of course have fun and throttle on! Appreciate all the great content!
I have really got to get back to AK, have only ever visited 20 yrs ago when I was 10. Do many people have life changing experiences as a 10 yr old? Because seeing that scenery after growing up on a flat NE US island... yeah that definitely has got to have something to do with why all I want to do is travel and see more of the world!

Enjoyed this so much, am still a student. I had to park my tail dragger for 3 months due to back surgery so really took to heart the guy who crashed, glad he made it. Especially liked the power off landing, it's how I was taught.Since my plane is 74 years old it's not to far fetched. Keep up the awesome videos!

Chris, I wish I had found your course earlier. I enrolled in that other course (PI) just about a month ago and spent the same exact money I would have spent on your course. Don't get me wrong, I have been learning a lot and I don't really have any complaints... but the quality of your video productions look better and learning from a fellow Alaskan would have been great.
I taught in bush Alaska for over ten years and spent a lot of time in bush planes. While living in Chalkyitsik, I had a pair of David Clarks and Art Warbelow or OJ would let me sit right seat so we could discuss flight and aviation related topics. I am now in South Dakota teaching on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Looking to get my CFI and start teaching an aviation pathway at our CTE high school.
Love the channel. Great quality. God I miss Alaska... but I make as much here as I did there with a third of the living cost... and that is how I am paying for my ppl. Later.

Precision landings are my favorite. I like to pick a spot and do all different variants of short/soft/power-off/normal, but all to a specified stripe. Practice practice practice! Power-off 180-Soft field precision landings are the most challenging. 😜

G, day AoA. I remember in 1999 in a Cessna 172 my concern for over shooting the runway on final.
    * the airport was NBZ (visual and radio announcement if plane equipped).
    * if cross wind is effecting heading, how wide should you fly out.

What would say your average MPH is when you turn final? And the the MPH on short final? I need to do more slow flight. I usually come across the fence at VNE in my D model. Well, ok. But I do come across too fast. Not intentionally of course. Great video as always.
