      I think of my dear departed mother (five years this month) now everytime I hear this song so I can understand that. I was lucky to have a very loving mother though. In her case, her mother was abusive but I feel like she had mental issues and Sinead understood that and forgave her for it. Very sad, and I think her tears are probably in wishing things had just been different.

    This is one of the greatest breakup songs ever written - the strength of her performance is the anger and frustration paired equally with the sorrow and loss. You can see the hopelessness and bitterness mixed with the love and grief, all at the same time. The end of a relationship is filled with extremely complex and mixed emotions, and I don't think any song catches it like this one.

    • @toddstevens13
      @toddstevens13 Před 3 lety +2

      Not a break up song, not with a Lover anyway. It is her talking to her mother who abused her in every respect, thus the Mama who planted the flowers in the backyard. It is a cathartic awakening. As a fellow abused, she had no way to understand what was happening to her, she just knew she had to eventually get away. Now as adult, she is finally ready to forgive, having dealt with the intense pain, sadness, emptiness knowing that she should of not be treated as she was, she (like most victims) as a child was still desperate for Love from her abuser. You are bang on the anger and frustration is part of her coming towards acceptance, and her realization of all the sorrow and loss she had to go through to become a functioning adult, still wanting Love from her parent, even though the pain given. She finally was ready to forgive her abuser, and become a fully functioning Adult within as well as outwardly.

Prince said to Susan Rogers that he did not like Sinead's cover and that in general he did not want anyone to cover his songs. To be fair, many of her own songs are bad. Nothing great to them and if she wasn't known or had a 'look' (or politics) or did this song, very few people would even know who she is today. Just going by her own music, she would have gone away by 1995, which was not uncommon at all. Endless female (and male) singers/bands were dead in the water by the 1990s if not 1980s (depending on when they started and their style). Even Queen didn't really make it beyond 1991. I think she's more talented than most of her songs show, and she has a great voice. Her version of this song is a masterpiece, though. I need to check out more of her songs to see if I just picked the bad ones or not.

    💜Back story on this song that Prince wrote! He said that he could write a song about anything & if I didn't believe before (I did but) I sure do now! This song is not about love. When he was in the midst of having Paisley Park built, touring & recording his housekeeper who basically ran his life but left because her father was ill. She took care of everything for him. He asked when she was coming back & was told she wasn't. The reference of " its been 7 hours & 13 days" is when he asked about her coming back. The "since you've been gone I can do whatever I want & eat my dinner in a fancy restaurant" is him being a bit reckless eating out instead of her cooking for him/making sure he ate right or at all, "all the flowers that you planted in the back yard all died when you went away" she made sure his house was run smoorh & esp. "I know that living with me was sometimes hard but I'm willing to give it another try", he wasn't the easiest person to work for esp. W/his schedule & lifestyle , but she was really good & he wanted her back. Genius!!!💜

    I did meet [Prince] a couple of times. We didn't get on at all. In fact, we had a punch-up. He summoned me to his house after "Nothing Compares 2 U". I made it without him. I'd never met him. He summoned me to his house-and it's foolish to do this to an Irish woman-he said he didn't like me saying bad words in interviews. So I told him to f*** off. He got quite violent. I had to escape out of his house at five in the morning. He packed a bigger punch than mine.[27]
