This oil painting of a big cumulonimbus cloud overlooking a field of bluebonnets is my newest landscape. I hope that you enjoy this behind-the scenes demo of my painting process.
This is actually an iconic view from Willow City Loop, where bluebonnets thrive in the Texas Hill Country. I return to this particular location and the surrounding area again, and again and always find inspiration for my paintings.

Thank you, Sir! I came for the clouds, but, the green landscape brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Magical...well that's how you make it look. 👏
Thank you so much!

So beautiful to watch a person connect with their higher mind. That's an artist's inner being shining and illuminating the entire room! You are a beautiful being sir! Absolutely gorgeous!
Thank you! 🙏
Beautifully transfigured creation of sky, complete with alternative evolving landscape.😊
Thank you! 🙏
Your patience and tender loving care with each stroke. Such a thing of beauty. You are gifted. Thank you for the video.
Thank you for your very kind words.
Am I the only one who sees a big grey face looming out from the white clouds. It is called paradolia.
LOL- I thought of a Silverback gorilla face @9:55. Which to me, makes it more real as we all look for "objects" in clouds. Even so- beautiful cloud.
Hey Grey - thanks for that. I didn't know that had a name, but that's exactly it. Just like we did when we were kids. Look at clouds long enough, and you can see almost anything! People have seen so many different things in these clouds (including a buffalo stampede!). But this is just a big cumulonimbus cloud. Nothing more. :-)
Thank you! As I mentioned to Grey, people have seen so many different things in these clouds (including a buffalo stampede!). But this is just a big cumulonimbus cloud. Nothing more. :-)
I see King Kong 😅
Yes "pareidolia" since my childhood I have seen faces everywhere and you have just put a name to this phenomenon.
Thx a lot.

Fantastic and I recognize that scene, I've tried painting it once but since I am mainly an abstract artist I tend to veer off. Epic!

Amazing work! Im curious about the underpainting. Doesnt that get lost when you go over it with color? Is the color very transparent in allowing the underpainting to come through? Thanks
Thanks! Yes, the first layers are more transparent, but it's more than that. The underpainting helps create a range of values, establishing the highlights, mid-tones, and darks in the landscape - right from the beginning. It also creates a unified tonal base that acts as a harmonizing element for the subsequent layers. In the final painting there are still areas of the underpainting that come through. It's much harder to see that in video, but you can definitely see it in person.

@@LayneJohnsonStudio Thank you, Layne!! It's something I've always been curious about.
What an absolute masterpiece!

Awesome, thank you!
Thank you for the information you are giving to all of us newbies. Just wondering what monitor you use to display the picture of what you’re painting? Thanks again. :-)
It's just a Dell monitor connected to a laptop. But I have the monitor on an arm that I can rotate vertical or horizontal. 👍 And you're very welcome!
This. This is why AI will never be as special as a real physical painting.
I have to say I agree with you!

This cloud reminds me of King Kong (of course, Pareidolia effect), beautiful.
Yes, Pareidolia effect! And clouds seem to be particularly good subjects for this. Look at them long enough, and you can see almost anything! People have seen so many different things in these clouds (including a buffalo stampede!). But this is just a big cumulonimbus cloud. Nothing more. :-)
I wish I could draw like this. Without the training required, of course, 'cause I don't find the middle steps rewarding enough to motivate me hahaha
Yep, like anything, it does take work and you have to actually WANT to paint. ;)
Dear Layne, before you applied the imprimatura, you established the design to be covered. Which fixative did you use?
I like to use Workable Fixatif (made by Krylon) to seal my drawings. There's more info on the imprimatura stage in this video: czcams.com/video/ntSJ1nEeh9o/video.html

I’ve seen articles warning against using thinners in an underpainting/wash stating that it can cause an under bound layer of paint that can cause future peeling. I guess there is a right and wrong way to do it?
Absolutely correct. You don't want to overdo the solvent to paint ratio. I also typically add in a bit of medium to my mixture. You can tell if you've overdone it if the DRY paint easily wipes off like chalk on a chalkboard. The wash should be thinned paint. NOT thinner with a little bit of paint. (And this is the only stage where I use solvent in my paint. After this stage, only mediums.)
1000 times better than a monalisa
Thanks very much! 🙏
Where did you get an easel that large??
It's a David Sorg counterbalanced easel that I got from Jerry's many years ago (and I've made modifications to it). Unfortunately, I don't think it's available any longer.
The big cloud on the right looks like a big Gorilla head/face and the left cloud looks like a Spartan warrior with helmet. Awesome painting though.
Aren’t clouds amazing? Look at them long enough, and you can see almost anything! (Apparently it's called pareidolia.) People have seen so many different things in these clouds (including a buffalo stampede!). But this is just a big cumulonimbus cloud. Nothing more. :-) Thanks!
Magnifique !!!

облако по центру похоже на барана. люблю облака и небо. всегда любуюсь красотой облаков на небе.
Thanks very much! It's been fascinating watching all the different things people are seeing in these clouds.
Opera strepitosa, quali sono i colori usati e di quale marca??
Grazie a prescindere per aver condiviso
Thank you! I use a variety of professional grade oil paint brands including: Williamsburg, M. Graham, Old-Holland, Gamblin, Charvin, Winsor & Newton, Lukas, Grumbacher, Rublev, Maimeri, and Georgian.
Others have asked "What is your favorite brush for painting clouds". It looks to be a short filbert?? But it also looks very thin/narrow??? Thoughts anyone?
For clouds it's definitely filberts of all sizes (depending on the stage). 👍
Do you use your own reference photos or from the internet?
I use my own. I travel the area I like to paint and sometimes paint en plein air. I also take lots and lots of photos. But a photo is only a starting point _reference_ . The essence of a scene, or the location, comes down to feeling, not just what's located there. I use those photos, combined with my own experience, memory of the place, and imagination. How to paint that experience ...that's the art of it.
@@LayneJohnsonStudio How fascinating, your artwork is absolutely stunning.
Seems like Your room has projector to pick up the outline, ever used projector??
Nope, never used a projector. I think you're seeing my monitor, where I have my reference images from my composition.
Godblessyou
Thank you! 🙏
Superbe, je vois 2 têtes dans les nuages ...

The clouds look amazing, very realistic, genuine, and formitable. Unfortunately, the landscape is too saturated and idealic, looks like a Disney or Thomas Kinkade work.
Sounds like you've not been to the Texas Hill Country in the spring when the bluebonnets are in bloom. It's VERY green then. A few weeks later, not so much. This is a real location... and yes, it IS idyllic. Hopefully it'll stay that way, but it's changing all the time. (Google "Willow City Loop")
симпатично, но не хватает оттенков в зелени, всё одинаково зеленое
Lol - you must have missed all the greens on my palette. And this location in the spring when the bluebonnets are in bloom is VERY green. A few weeks later, the greens are more muted. By the way, it's hard to capture with a camera all the shades of green that you'd see if you saw this painting in person.
It’s much better not to copy, but do the same with memory, imagination, and heart… then the real magic comes.
There is no point to copy then you just make 2 of the same thing.
I completely agree. While I believe painting from observation (especially if you're a representational painter like me) is important. I also firmly believe you shouldn't just blindly copy what you're seeing. Even nature needs to be composed, even when it's a real place like this one. And there are infinite number of decisions every painter makes (even subconsciously) while painting. That's the magic.
Porque as nuvens ficaram com fisionomia de macacos? Nada contra!
It's called the Pareidolia effect. And clouds seem to be particularly good subjects for this. Look at them long enough, and you can see almost anything! People have seen so many different things in these clouds (including a buffalo stampede!). But this is just a big cumulonimbus cloud. Nothing more. :-)
Bravo for the painting. Not so much for the music lol
