What a pleasant surprise Kingdom Hearts was 20+ years later. Really was not expecting to enjoy my time with this game as much as I did. Definitely basic in some ways, rough in a few others, but worth my- and possibly your- time!

If you pay attention as you play through the games, Goofy is somehow the smart one of the group.
The three questions on the boat at the start decide your xp gain for the game.
Journey begins at dawn=level faster up to 50, then level slow
Journey begins at noon=steady/base level pace
Journey begins at night=slow level until 50, then quick level
I listed in that order because it corresponds with which choice you need to make for each one. If you want a dawn journey, answer the questions by picking the top answer at least twice.
when you see the Kingdom Hearts 2 Secret Ending, thats when you realize how amazing the series is. It is truly one of the most marvelous scenes yet to date in gaming.
I'm excited to get there one day! I'm kind of an OCD player but I'll get back to KH sooner than later. Obviously it's for the people lol

Kingdom hearts in my mind was the best game that came out the year it came out. Graphics were cool. Game had depth, combat was incredible.
I’m so excited to see all these new KH analyses pop up on CZcams lately! This one definitely brings me a lot of joy, especially knowing you first brushed off the series. Also your inclusion of Dearly Beloved in your composition is so friggin good. If you ever have the heart to, I’d love to see you talk about KH 2 since it’s the favorite of a lot of veteran KH players! I’ll never forget the opening sequence/first world of the game. That door that appears under the waterfall and the mystery that comes with it. I always viewed it as Destiny Island being a metaphor for childhood and having time to play and dream and not knowing what’s behind that door but approaching it with curiosity and child like wonder. Those interactions between Sora, Riku and Kairi and remembering what it’s like to want to build a raft and explore the world. The world is so big and exciting when you’re young. This game just captures that magic of being really young so well. Especially the music. And I was only 8 when it came out so it left a big impact on me. Especially when that kid on the island asks what you’re most afraid of. Ironically I always chose “getting old”.
What a beautiful interpretation! I definitely saw the parallels to childhood- how life forces you to go your separate ways with people you care about being a big theme. It feels like as they grow up, they grow apart. But since this is a Japanese RPG, that means having to duel with swords and magic lol.

I'm so glad this showed up on my recommended page today! Really enjoyed your video and I am always happy seeing new people experience these games. I played the 3 mainline games growing up and I am now going back through and playing the whole series. The "side" games are actually really good as well and carry so much of the stories throughout. If you don't play them I highly suggest you at least watch cutscene videos or summaries on them before you jump in to the mainline games (in order of release). I love almost every part of these games but my favorite is 100% the amazing OST by Yoko Shimomura. I listen to them in playlists at least weekly.
Yea, it seems like the non-numbered games are just as important to the series as the numbered ones. I'll definitely at least watch some playthroughs or video compilations of the cutscenes.

I really just wanted to be back on land swinging my sword and doing the things I was already really liking about the game. I tent o not like when areas of a game are so different that they limit what you've come to really enjoy in the gameplay.

Also, should you be interested in continuing, I would recommend you save the "movies" in the 1.5 + 2.5 collection for last, and recommend playing in release order.
See, you say "movies" and I swear I'm not even sure what that means haha. Like I said, I went in pretty blind- but I did learn quite a bit as I researched topics for the video. Is the menu in the Collection in release order, or recommended play order? Or are they the same?

Interesting... I was kind of gathering that from how people were talking about them. Were they ALWAYS just movies? Or did they compile them down instead of remastering them?
@@thegamersician With 358/2 days it was originally a handheld game, but the problem was the way they did it was more like a mobile game where you grind a bit then stop playing after doing quest. It was really grindy and not really that playable nor practical for anything outside of mobile/handheld. Square decided to just release a movie remaster of it.
@@thegamersician 358/2 Days and Re:Coded were originally DS games. I really wish they'd remaster those for console like BBS had been because having a console graphic game where you can play as Roxas would be awesome imo. Also Days had a multiplayer option outside it's main story gameplay.
Good to see you enjoyed it. KH1 is and has been my favorite of the series since launch, and while I'd recommend checking the other installments out (in a All-In-One bundle) I've also long since given up trying to get anyone into this convoluted series lol.

it's so refreshing to see a video on kingdom hearts ONE. i played this series in order, and after replaying this game for the 5th time last year, it holds up so well. it's so tight and densely packed, that regardless of whether you play the whole series or not, you could very easily get a whole, satisfying experience from just this alone. love this game, and loved hearing your take on it. atlantica does suck, but at least the rest of the game makes up for it haha. great video man! keep it up :)

Wow! This game takes me back! I think its one the first PS 2 games I bought and I loved! I hope you try Kingdom Hearts 2 because the gameplay is so much fun in that one! Also, you should try the other Kingdom Hearts main games and side games as well!

You gotta play that KH Re:Chain of Memories to understand KH2 and it may be the most annoying of the KH games but it starts to get better as you go further in i hope you enjoy the series as much as i do man

Glad to see that you're taking your first steps into this absolute pit of insanity the rest of us are in. You should at least play Kingdom Hearts 2 as that is to this day, one of the best and smoothest gameplay experiences I've had. The story is just sooooo good and it definitely fixes is a lot of the gameplay, camera, flow of combat and overall experience issues the original KH had. Every single one of the bosses I might just put up to the top best bosses I've ever fought against (if we aren't including other Kingdom Hearts titles). Yoko really whips it out and swings her talent for Video Game music all about the place for all to see even more so than she did in KH1. There is a game in between KH1 and KH2 but honestly you're better off watching the HD cutscene compilation unless you like loosing your mind playing with cards and deck building.
So very true! I'm glad I took the step too. It seems like KH2 might be exactly the follow-up I'm looking for- I really did enjoy KH but some smoother gameplay would be exactly what I'm looking for. Also, more consistency in boss fights.
Yoko is a genius. I really admire her work. Stay a student of hers' in my own music!

@@thegamersician oh I can guarantee it is. If you end up streaming it or something I'd be totally down to watch it live. It is definitely a experience. Re:Chain of Memories (which originally came out on the Gameboy so you can definitely tell that through the gameplay even with it later being ported over to the PS2 and then getting a HD remix) is in between the 2 games and you should definitely watch the cutscene collection as KH 2 takes place after that game. There's also 358/2 days which takes place in parallel of the very end of KH through to KH2 following my favorite character (possibly of all time) that you'll also see in KH2 but his story is better experienced after you have finished KH2. Every single boss fight feels unique in Kingdom Hearts 2 with the difficulty being challenging (but not because of the game mechanics this time) but exceptionally fun to play. You'll definitely form some core memories there lol. Although I will have to warn you that the secret bosses will make you pull your hair out but both are definitely worth at least trying. You definitely understand what I mean the moment you will see them.
And yeah, Nomura did say that the Final Fantasy VII Remake mechanics take after Kingdom Hearts 2/3 systems more than they did Crisis Core and you'll start feeling that more and more as the series goes on. In fact I would have to say that the Final Fantasy VII Remake combat system is an extremely watered-down version of KH2/3 due to those games carrying over mechanics from previous games (Especially KH3 carrying and refining the best mechanics from the previous 10 games and blending them perfectly into the game play)
Yo this is good info. I love Crisis Core and I actually really like the FFVII Remake... so I'm excited to see what KH2 feels like.

i was 11 when KH1 first came out and it's pretty much the first game i ever formed an emotional connection to. i played ff7 after seeing sephiroth in the Olympus Coliseum and then that became the next game i formed a deep emotional connection to.

I often tell everybody who steps in to this game that it genuinely gets better after the Tarzan level, the gameplay is less clunky after that. Glad you got through it!

Ya know, I actually didn't... hate the Jungle. It was fine. I'd put it somewhere in the middle. I did not love the part with the vines, though- so clunky. Outside of that, it was pretty average. My favorite level was DEFINITELY Halloween Town. Loved the redesign of the characters, and seeing Jack Skelington slide on his knees to attack baddies never got old.

I played the entire series the first time in the 3 month lead up to Kingdom Hearts 3, I absolutely fell in love with the series, I've replayed most of the games since then, platinumed KH1 and CoM, collect the figures and listen to the soundtrack repeatedly 😄

@@thegamersician Haha, yeah definitely 😁 I bought it at the same time as Spider-man ps4, so was focused on that game first, finished that in a week, then ended up playing KH right after and was obsessed 😆
I had a friend who had it on his game shelf when I was a kid, but I never saw him play it, so never really knew anything about the game, so luckily I had no spoilers and had no idea what worlds would be included.
As soon as I finished a game, I moved to the next, did the collectable hunting later on, I wanted to see the story unfold first, so I'd say maybe took me a week or so to finish each game, but I stayed up late to finish off the final bosses, I was that invented 😆

Glad you enjoyed! That was my whole thing with this series- find some beloved games and try to be "neutral" in a modern setting. Hopefully that gives longtime fans a little something else to think about, and not get irrationally mad if I end up not liking it LOL. In this case though, I really liked it :)

Back in 2017, I got into Kingdom Hearts at 14 years old. (thanks to CZcams's constant recommendation on this one video. The one with the entire gameplay of KH1). It never occurred to me that I would be too old to play this game even when I saw the Disney characters. It just made me want to play the game more. Not only that but this game had a charm that I can't explain. I'm glad to say this game was part of my teenhood. (Surprisingly, the Atlantic stage never bothered me, it was the stinkin Gummi ship parts... both gets better in the 2nd 😊😆🤣)
Ha, so we're not that far apart in age. Funny that I was only a couple years older and thought it was for kids. Turns out, it was really a fantastic game. Can't wait to get back to the series and try the second one!

This showed up on my recommended outta nowhere, and I even accidentally clicked it, but you had me intrigued from the start lol. I love that you enjoyed it, even with its outdated platforming, and flaws that are definitely present. Idk if you’re gonna do the rest of the series, but I’ll subscribe anyways for how well done this video was and look out for it. But what you said about the exploration and all the cool secrets that honestly are a big reason why this is MY favorite KH game to this day, after all these years… that’s not present in the 2nd game or other titles. The world design in kh2 is honestly a joke. Every world, it’s just hallways.. the sense of wonder, it’s gone. But the combat and gameplay is REALLY good. Like if you loved it here, they improved it in every way possible, like KH2 is most people’s favorite because of the combat(to this day no other game in the series surpasses it) but I love kh1 for the special charm it has, secrets.. the WAY simpler story. The 1.5/2.5 combo menu is not in the order that most players recommend. 358/2 was released after Kh2, and would spoil some narrative points of Kh2, so it's recommend to play it after. That said in the combo it isn't a game, and only a cutscene compilation. It is in that order because it's separated by (1.5)(2.5) both collections were 2 games, and a cutscene compilation. It wouldn't make any sense having Coded be in 1.5 since that's the latest game in these, so they put in 358/2 instead, despite it still being after Kh2.

if you continue with the series i highly recommend watching the 358/2 days movie after playing kh2, because a lot of the intrigue and mystery is lost if you watch it beforehand. also they combat in chain of memories is a bit of a mess, so just watching the cutscenes can fill you in on the story before playing kh2

First video of yours I've seen and the fact it was a KH video definately got my attention. This is a series very near and dear to me so it is interesting seeing people who didn't grow up with it try it out without any nostalgia attached to it and with modern game tendencies to compare it to.
KH certainly does make you feel just SOMETHING special that no other series has been able to replicate, even with it's flaws. The HD remaster still has many of the flaws of the original but you'd be glad you were spared the absolute hell that was a lack of camera control on the analog stick in the PS2 original (you had to control it with L1 and R1!). It is clunky and shows it's age but I think the first game was truly something unique even compared to later entries.
I do hope you consider trying out the later games as they do vary in quality and there's something to like and dislike about each one that different people will vary WILDLY in opinion on what they prefer and why.
Man, aren't we lucky to have modern controls? Like, seriously. Playing like that sounds like the definition of pain. It was already pretty rough with how it stuck in corners and on enemies but I can't imagine having to juggle L1 and R1 to make the camera move....
I'll definitely give the later games a go soon! My goal is to make sure this series is well rounded- I have a list of close to 60 games to pool from in a spreadsheet- but KH2 will definitely be in the mix :)

@@thegamersician Sounds great! As others may have mentioned already though...you will be 100% lost if you jump into only the numbered titles. Each "side game" in between 1, 2 and 3 is actually very important for the story so it's best to play them all in the order they released. It's like watching only Avengers 1, 2 and Infinity War and wondering wtf is going on and who half the characters are if you only stick to the numbered KH games.

A lot of talk regarding the "convuluted" story in Kingdom Hearts is overexaggerated. It isn't until the more latter half of the series where things get a little wonky. I'm glad you enjoyed the first game and I hope you continue on! It's a phenomenal series.

Sub earned and Google algorithms are great. My fave was birth by sleep and chain of memories. I was the only kid in highschool that enjoyed this game. Squeenix was really great at that time, now the only good thing of relevance that they did recently was Octopath Traveler. My fave RPG to this day is kingdom hearts. I haven't forgotten my first experience playing through the game and completing it.

I did! I produce everything on my channel. I mix and master all my music, so the audio portion of video is much easier for me :)
And I was a rapper/producer for close to 15 years. Some of my teens, most of my 20s and some of my 30s. This channel was (partially) a way to re-engage my music making skills. I made the intro music, the main music, the outro music... if it's on this channel and not noted as being from someone else, I produced it.
I released an instrumental album late last year called "Plug & Play" which was a compilation and arrangement of some of my favorite instrumentals from the first year. I'll be doing this every year.

You absolutely 1000000000% should play through KH2, seriously you won’t regret it. Combat is leaps and bounds better and more comprehensive. Add to that the story is full of amazing memorable moments.

I remember playing this when it first came out because my mom and dad got it for me for Christmas that year and I’ve been a Kingdom hearts fan ever since and that any time I knew or even saw that a new kingdom hearts game was out I would actually go buy it and I would grind through that hard

You might not read this since its from an old video, but i would still like to talk about this.
Kh is a daunting series. It is my fav franchise, but i know its not perfect. The fact that the franchise was distributed in multiple different consoles such as GBA, nintendo ds, ps2-5, mobile, etc makes the gameplay on some of them inconsistent. I hated the combat system for re chain of memories. 358/2 gameplay was removed in the package, and replaced with a 3 hour movie with remastered scenes, but the story itself is fantastic.
Getting into KH is very hard, and the story is something you have to spend the time to understand it, even if it means consuming other forms of media to do it, BUT, i can safely say that those who stick with it you wont regret it.
I would recommend playing in release order instead of chronological order. I feel as if there is a bigger impact watching 358/2 days AFTER kingdom hearts 2. There is a divide in the community of how its played, but i lean towards release order because thats how those waiting patiently for the games did it

Happened to be your 300th subscriber, congratulations! Kingdom Hearts is one of my all time favorite games, although the story is SLIGHTLYYY weird.. It includes alot of characters spamming hearts, darkness, and a ton of words in multiple different languages or that is how it feels.
Yea, the story was... fine. But the gameplay rocked, and I loved the imaginative worlds and exploration!

I will say however....idk why the collection does this, but it does NOT list them in the best play order, and idk why anyone would say it does. I'd say the best order is release order of when the originals came out, but at the very least two games need to be swapped.
Please play Kingdom Hearts 2 before you go through 358/2 Days. While timeline wise 358/2 Days goes before 2....thats because it's a prequel that was made AFTER reveals from KH 2, and playing it before KH 2 kinda messes up that mystery and discovery that game has.
So the order id recommend on that collection is:
KH1
KH: Chain of Memories
KH2
KH 358/2 Days
KH Birth By Sleep
Kh Re:Coded.
After that if you are fully committed to the rest of them I'd say this order:
KH: Dream Drop Distance
KH 0.2 Birth By Sleep a Fragmentary Passage
KH Union X and Back Cover (there is a youtube video that splices them together well if I remember, so I'd just watch that)
KH3
KH3 Re:Mind DLC
Kh Dark Road
KH Melody of Memory
I'll definitely keep this in mind if I really hunker down and commit to all of them. At the very least, I plan on watching cutscenes of CoM and then playing KH2, because I'm really excited for 2!

Personally I never was bothered by the Atlantis level but on the bright side you can skip it totally skippable if you ever decide to play the game again lol

Like, the combination of the controls (I was more bothered by my inability to do all the cool shit I HAD been doing), my game crashing, the whole thing with the artifact behind the wall that was NOT clear, I couldn't get an event to trigger even with a guide, and then having to listen to UNDER THE SEA IN INSTRUMENTAL FORM ON LIKE AN 8 BAR LOOP. almost set me over the edge. Heads up if you do the rest of the series, the confusion is way overblown. It’s confusing if you only play 1, 2 and 3 because the ‘side’ games are important. If you play each game in order it’s really easy to understand. With the HD collections this is definitely easy now, unlike when the series was across console and handhelds
