  • In this episode I examine my first mechanical issue and hope it doesn't mean the end of my trip before it has even begun.
The Trans-Taiga Road is an extremely remote dead-end gravel road that runs 666 km east from the 544km marker of the Billy Diamond Parkway formerly named the James Bay Rd.
There are no settlements or towns aside from Hydro Quebec's residence for workers (not open to the public).
At the far end you will be 745 km from the nearest town!
This is the farthest you can get from a town on a road in North America!
Although there are no towns, there are a couple of outfitters along the way that sell fuel and offer meals and lodging.
Along this road is also the farthest north point you can travel on a road in eastern Canada.
Cell phones do not work here.
My favorite quote from the James Bay Road website "Bears live here"
Taiga is a forest of the cold, subarctic region. The subarctic is an area of the Northern Hemisphere that lies just south of the Arctic Circle. The taiga lies between the tundra to the north and temperate forests to the south. ... The soil beneath the taiga often contains permafrost-a layer of permanently frozen soil.

I find GOOD bungees to be much better for securing things to a bike. Much more forgiving. I use an aluminum camping fuel bottle , smaller but enough to get to a gas station if needed. I see you have Heidenau Scout 60 tires, I'm on my second rear that lasted 10,000 miles and the front should make 20 to double the rear.

No matter how many times you check something always comes loose and usually at the wrong time, ask me how I know !!

Ya it was totally my fault. I looped the strap incorrectly. I had even thought about cutting off the excess but even that wouldn't have helped

I've been considering my aux fuel options... I have similar hard cases, I think I'm gonna spend the extra $$$ on Rotopax cans that will sit flat on top or strap to the side of my cases. ;)

That's a way better choice. I was just trying to do this trip on an extra low budget. I had considered leaving one or both of the gas cans in Brisay and then ride to the end, come back fuel up, leave the cans, south branch, come back and load them back up before heading to Mirage again
