  • The 30p footage was shot in the cinema subdued picture profile and we shot during daytime until sunset around the beach in Santa Monica. We shot 24p using the cinema standard picture profile. You’ll see midday shots around the finish line for the LA Marathon and after sunset around the Santa Monica pier. Most of the shots were at 400 & 800 ISO. Overall, we are extremely impressed with this camera and feel it is going to do very well in the marketplace… A big thanks to the engineering and sales divisions at JVC for supplying the camera for us to test!”

I've had a chance to work with this camera and I have a lot to learn about it. But at the outset I have some questions you guys at EVS might have the solutions for. Let me put it this way; I feel like I'm shooting blind. Exposure is the issue: I feel like I'm just guessing for the following reasons.
The evf is terribly small and, in my view, difficult to use, and the eye cup very small--this should be much better on a camera like this. To make matters worse there is no histogram and what you see on the LDC in terms of image color and exposure is very different from what is actually being produced. The focus peaking feature is nice the way it works, but you have to physically toggle from the peaking image to the color image--I can live with that. But with the visual means, the evf and lcd and only zebra, I feel I'm completely guessing at exposure at any given moment. And it's making me a little crazy.
Of course, I was hoping there would be more image adjustment options and color depth control--disappointing, but that is mostly fixable in post. But the exposure issue and lcd that makes everything look like you're shooting flat is spooking me. Do you guys have any comments that might be helpful--what could I be doing wrong?

the camera is not bad but nothing notable either. im not sure who buys this camera. i guess the lens crop options will be interesting to a few that have diverse glass? is that the biggest benefit of the camera? glad to see JVC attempt to compete with all the other main stays.

I have a bunch of MFT lenses by Panasonic & Olympus so would it be better to get the JVC LS300 or stick with my Panasonic G80/85-or maybe look at the GH4? Also, can you adjust the field of view on the LS300 (e.g. make the sensor crop to give you effectively more reach from my telephoto lens?

Pretty nice. Glad to see JVC has taken a big step. Looking at the LS300, or a Panasonic GH4 (all my studio friends have switched to the Panny GH4 and swear by them) or a Blackmagic Production camera. Add a Blackmagic Hyperdeck or Ninja type of device to the JVC or Panasonic and you get the benefits of the Blackmagic Production camera. Decisions decisions.. The Rokinon glass looked very serviceable and they are 1/6 the price of Zeiss and I'm guessing at 80% the quality? (Meaning one heck of a good workable deal) Would that be fair?

alexshdvideo GH4 Looks waaaay more cinematic. Everything I've seen shot on this cam has the oversharpened video look. Not to mention the dynamic range and highlight handling is awful on the JVC.

So can I set to ISO 100 in gy-Ls300 ?
What is the lowest ISO can do in this machine?

  • @anhon9516

How to set ISO in gy-Ls300 ?
Direct set in ISO ? Or in gain ?
I mean gain 0 is equal to ISO 400?
So how many gain equal to ISO 100?

Thanks for doing the leg work. I would say on parr, with what Canon XF can produce, and below C300. I like the form factor and size (JVC is one of the best when it comes to ergonomics), but it still looks like video, and motion rendering at 30p just plain sucks (footage of the guy swinging). I wish BM put Pocket into this body…..

***** Thanks, but unfortunately I am on the other side of the country. With the price drop on C300, it's now no brainer for me as far as purchasing. Having all the accessories from XF, and C300 being $1500 more then JVC, plus already having Canon glass I think I made my decision. But thanks for doing leg work and showing the samples! I appreciate your contributions to film community

Robert Rogoz You can used Canon Glass (adapter need it) in this camera. C300 is superior if you doing high ISO work, but JVC color are pretty nice, and this camera is flexible you can go with a speedbooster from close to full 35 down to super 16 and basically any lens out there.

try watching in 4k if you wernt already. I am on a 1080p screen but it still looks way better in 4k. the compression seems to have significantly degraded it...
