How does DHCP work?
When a device on your network needs an IP address, more than likely it will use DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) to obtain the IP address and other network configuration setting.
Below are the steps taken by the devices to obtain an address using DHCP.
DHCPDiscover - Looks for a DHCP server
DHCPOffer - The DHCP server offers an address
DHCPRequest - The host requests to lease the address
DHCPACK - DHCP server sends the IP addresses to the host
DHCP is an essential part of everyday life for our networks that we take for granted every single day! Let’s Take a moment to appreciate the work DHCP does.
Thanks DHCP!

Awesome work, keep going!
Haha thanks Catarina!!
As soon as he said f*#k I subscribed
HAHAHA! Thanks man!
That's why I love these vids
Haha, me too!
me too hahaha, he seems pretty awesome!!!
Same here actually
Host 'B' got attitute bro! rejecting every single packet ...
Hahah! Dropping them like nothing
its not its fault the switch is an ass and keeps broadcasting those packets...or is thata hub? or do dhcp packets are meant to be broadcasted? damn im confused now lol
B stands for "Bitch"
@@MrBrightsides DHCP packets probably are all broadcast messages cuz the client doesnt have an ip yet
@@MrBrightsides They indeed are broadcast. In the DHCP packet there is a field that contains the MAC address of the client interested in configuring its parameters. All the other hosts that recieve those DHCP packets will drop them at the application level, since they recognize that the value of the client MAC address inside those packets is not equal to theirs.
SIMPLE!!! Thank you so much for keeping this short AND simple. You've explained and made sense to a complete networking novice. I finally understand how DHCP works and with no thanks to any of the hour long videos I sat through. THANK YOU for keeping it near 5 minutes.
Thanks for the comment Brandon. Love reading comments like this!
Hi guys,
There are a lot of questions about the DHCPOffer being broadcasted. Sometimes is broadcast, sometimes it's unicast. It can depend on the situation such as obtaining a new IP or renewing an existing one. I made the video like this for simplicity sake.
If you fancy diving into the details, check out RFC 2131.
Hopefully, this clears up any confusion.
After the DHCP Server responds do the DHCPDiscover packet, the communication is not unicast ? The dhcp discover is broadcast, after that, the communication is unicast.
Clear, to the point, simple diagrams!! Thanks. You guys are best in uncomplicated things!
I agree with many of the other comments in that I love this video! It's quick, concise, clear, and most of all funny! Keep it up. I am definitely subscribing.
Thanks Damien!

Very clear, concise explanation! I was engaged for the entire video. Anyone can understand DHCP with the way this was explained.
Great to hear! Thank you.
Great simple vid! No explanation for the frame nomenclature i.e., DHCPOFFER, etc. yet completely digestible. Great work.
Really like the way you explain things. Went on to watch the OSI Model vid & then TCP/IP accordingly. All stemmed from having a frustratingly slow internet with dropouts. I realised I needed to know what all these different acronyms mean and what they relate to. Now I know some simple stuff, I want to go deeper. You’d be surprised how many videos I had to click through ...that explain things using other acronyms!! Many thanks mate. Subscribed to your mail list. Hope your website is back up soon
Thank you, David. I really appreciated your support.
I know your pain around acronyms! They get thrown around a lot!
If you have questions, feel free to ask.

Only had to watch this once to fully understand DHCP. Very detailed video, great work!
Thanks for the comment! Glad you liked the video.
WOW, That's great explanation. Thanks a lot.
Thanks Emvitt!!

I'm studying Network+ and came across this video. Thank you for that wonderful explanation. I'm researching each and every topic so that I'm sure to understand it thoroughly and increase my shot at success on the 1st attempt.
Thanks Phillip! Good luck with the Network+ exam!
How'd you do?
hello bro, you are studying network, we have a guy who provide wifi service to our city and we have access to its office(or server) can we use that somehow to create a rotating proxy , (ie use all the router's IP in that network to send request. :)
This really clarifies the concept of DHCP I’ve been trying to grasp on the Google IT course. Thank you.
Happy to help!
This is hands down the best explanation in 5 mins. Such a difficult thing to cover everything important in such a short video. I wasted time watching other videos, some 13 15 mins long with a confused mind.
Best explanation of DHCP on youtube. Clear and simple. Thanks
Thanks Martin!

Great learning and comedy all in one. Thank you!

Question. In the diagram, if the switchport that goes to PC B is configured to be an ACCESS port, will the switch still send broadcast out through that port?
Awesome Video Bro, Keep Them Coming
Good basic explanation of DHCP. I especially liked that he spoke clearly and slowly and so I've subcribed for thoise reasons alone
Thanks Mo. Good to hear you liked the video. Appreciate your support 👌
Simple and to the point explanation!!! Thank you so much, wanted to ask a question regarding the DORA process, in video why it's shown as the switch doing a broadcast during DHCPOffer,as it should do a Unicast right when it already has the MAC of the DHCP requesting client.Correct me if I am wrong
I found this really helpful - trying to safely and knowledgeably configure my ZTE Router for a Mac, and until I found this, I'd sat through about 5 vids, the best I could find, not a single one in English, despite several of them claiming to be, and not a single one actually using a Mac to demonstrate.
You asked for suggestions: I'd be really grateful if you could follow on from this video, and explain for us how DHCP Ports and Binding fit into all this, and what we can best do to set up safe and as much as possible privacy-protecting home networks. Dunno about anyone else, but my privacy seems to slipping through my fingers like sand atm. Without naming names, a certain antivirus company's home antivirus for Mac started crashing Logic, and since I'm a professional composer, that was a problem. So I discontinued my subscription, and deleted the account and subscription via their website. Well over a year later, I am STILL getting "urgent - update account payment details" emails from them, despite having railed on Twitter in the hope of just embarrassing them into action. They keep reassuring me all is well, and refer me to their Ts and Cs. Which is utterly vague about what happens to data and info on customers once they cease to be customers..
Now, I realise this has f...k (since we're playing to the Yank gallery, if you cant beat them, join them) all to do with DHCP. But it's an example of how completely vulnerable we are, in these earliest of days of the IT Revolution.
So, someone - as you've done here - explaining not just what, but why and how, is a Godsend! A Millennial (or worse, a kid at school) might think "wtf, how boring?" I believe no one under the age of about 15 bothers to even write complete words anymore, we're supposed to divine what they mean from the clues in the choice of consonants and/or vowels they leave for us. But that's the Comprehensive System for you, as Victoria Wood wrote! Meanwhile, us poor Gen Xers, once proud of our O Level Computer Studies (1983, thought myself so 'advanced' - I could write in BASIC!! How sad is that!!?) but lost in the Saharan Sands of all the jargon and "Nerd-Speak" and I don't think I speak for just myself when I say I find this hard going, infuriating (I really have no idea who the fuck's got what the fuck about me, and why are they allowed to store private info anyway?) and therefore a little scary...
Perhaps it is just me...? :-) It's OK - the kids love Bond movies, but haven't a f..cking clue what an E minor 9th chord is... To each his own!
(It's that crunchy chord at the end of the Bond theme!)
I have an interview on Friday for an IT support job at school - this was very helpful!
+clairee9698 Good luck with the interview. Keep us posted!
he never kept us posted...
*she and I GOT THE JOB
Awesome work Claire!! Congrats!
