  • My goodness what a weird one this was. In an attempt to champion automotive endurance, this monster race was born (although it was technically cancelled before it even started but ignore that). A strange footnote in the history of motor racing but it has undeniably had a profound impact on the look of racing ever since.

This is the one I've been waiting for. Thanks for taking a look at this race, I've been fascinated by it ever since I found a copy of Barzini's book.

the prince had already undertaken several expeditions through Russia and Mongolia, which is why he was so prepared. when the race was cancelled the prince ignored it and set off, the others following. it was the other teams that allowed pons to ship the contal through the mountains as he slowed them down. the teams did send out a search party for pons (though the prince was more concerned about keeping to his own timetable). due to pons unknowingly straying off course the search party were unsuccessful. Pons quickly forgave Goddard (who had carried the supplies that Pons couldn't, and held back to keep an eye on him) and the De Dion teams when he found out.

Thank you so much for this! Barely any videos about this race, can't wait to see your version on the NY to Paris race next, maybe someday. Have a great 2023:)

Glad you enjoyed! To be honest I probably won't talk much about NY Paris because my focus will be now on the new grands prix scene. I might do a proper video on it when I look back on the history of US motorsport

And do one about Nazzaro’s 1907. May still be among the best racing seasons ever.

I highly recommend watching the 2006 Peking to Paris television series by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. They re-enact the journey with the 5 vehicles identical to those in the original race.
