I agree about Goodwill. What people don’t understand is yes, they get the items for free, but they have to pay thousands of employees, pay rent on hundreds of store, they have utilities, insurance, taxes, upkeep. And all with the raising costs we all have. And if I were the CEO of a big well know chain company, I would expect big pay too.

The thing is the majority of people in my area who shop at goodwill are poor people, not resellers. And they have so much inventory right now because it’s priced so high and they don’t want to pay for it or can’t afford it. It’s nothing but greed. Asking people to round up. Keep raising prices. CEO is a millionaire.

I haven't been to Goodwill for a long time because of disabilities. But I do read about people complaining about the prices. I don't think people realize how much it costs them for rent, utilities, etc.I imagine that their insurance is very expensive ,after all, if someone slips and falls and gets hurt, they are probably going to sue. Several times over the last few months, I've seen on TV Goodwills that have been totally destroyed because of severe weather conditions. Again, they need insurance for both. And here in Indiana, they have over a dozen Excel centers that do a lot of good for people who can't get help otherwise. So when I can get some things together, I still donate to Goodwill.

Indianapolis has a huge ShopGoodwill presence which is larger than other city’s in the amount they sell.

Your Goodwill is large compared to ones in my area. We only have upper lower metal shelves on a short wall for hardgoods and another one on another wall for books, tapes and cd's. 6 table bins one for linens, toys, infant clothes, women's accessory clothings and mens. Rest is clothes, few shoe racks, 1 stand for purses, little bit of furniture. Pretty sad. 😢

At our estate sales we do our best to make money for the family and in turn make money for us... so we try to price things on the first day for the collectors and hope we can get a good price, but that is also why we do a 20% off or day and then a 50% off day. We are not there to make money for resellers but also I know A LOT of our customers are resellers... it's a fine line when trying to price! But overall we do very well and sell about 90% of the household every time.
Misty- glad you had a great getaway with family. You mentioned that you know your Goodwill looks stuff up and sends the GOOD stuff to Goodwill on line auctions. I know that the Goodwills in my area (Western PA) does the same, in fact I have been told by a former employee that if a particular Goodwill gets a great piece in and it goes for good money online that the Manager of that store gets a bigger bonus. I can’t verify if that’s the gospel truth
but I heard it from a reputable source. Good for them- I just miss the days that us resellers had a chance at some great stuff too. 😕

I still have 2 Willow trees I sold some at a yard sale for 5 dollars each...there were my mother in law she went into nursing home... around here you can't give them away...so if anyone wants mine I will sell them I have the one with a wreath and one with the wheat...

Goodwills here in central FL sell Dollar Tree stuff for 3-4 dollars. T-shirts that were not long ago 99 cents are now $2.99 and up. Most of their items are trash or broken. And most end up at 1 of our 2 Outlet bins for around $2 a pound. When I worked for Goodwill in 1997 the acting CEO lived in a huge house in fancy Winter Park. I worked at the Boutique store. He'd drive in from time to time in his big Caddie to ck us out. As an asst manager I was making 5 bucks an hour. Now the regular employees are making $15. You can't convince me resellers are the problem. Goodwill knows when they have sometime valuable and puts it online. All the regular junk that regular shoppers need have quadrupled in price. It's just GREED on their part. Terrible. I never donate to them and only shop now if I actually need something I know they may have. No more perusing the shelves for fun items.
Everything isn't about me.
If GW increases their prices a bit, but keeps things available for local people who need a brick and mortar resource, I'm on board with that.
And, it's worth noting that resellers always leave more than enough items behind for regular shoppers.
So sure, my margins are lower, but it still works for both regular shoppers and for me.
It's great to see a balanced perspective on this!
