    The reason reuenthal takes on reinhard is the conclusion to the struggel inside him. In one scene reinhart tells hildegard that he doesn't want his heir to take the throne but instread the person that can beat him in battle. That fires reuenthal up and this then reaches the climax. It makes even more sense if you remember reuentals upbringing and his relationship with power and especially risk.

      Reunthal rebelled for many reasons. He was backed to the corner by political enemies of the empire who framed him. He was also very proud and refused to apologize twice after dedicating his life to Reinhard. The challenge that Reinhard gave him was also something Reinhard wanted (having worthy enemies to fight against) but can never ask for since it would be politically damnation for a new ruler to have a thirst for war. But for a loyal vassal, that was the one thing he would give to Reinhard, a ironic act of loyalty to give Reinhard the battle he wanted. But the most important one was that he was always similar to Reinhard in both ability and ambition. He recognize Reinhard as his better but they were two men with the ambition to take over the universe so it was inevitable that they would clash, especially when Reinhard favored him, Oberstein and Mitenmyer as the most loyal and powerful retinue.

    The ship thing can be explained by the high command wanting to protect their admirals so they get better ships.
    In the empire it makes even more sense. The class struggle between the aristocrats and common folk is very hard and real. So many admirals would have far better and experimental ships then any other branch of the army to show that the guys on top rule.
    Also the ships of the FPA are more cramped to reduce costs while the Galactic Empire ones are super luxurious to showcase wealth and power.
    Also Reunthal and Myttermier start of in similar ships like the others in their fleets then change them with rank.

    • @Nozawachter
      @Nozawachter Před 3 lety +5

      Also !! FPA ships are smaller and can’t land on planets, they use shuttles instead. I thought this was a great explanation as Imperial ships can enter atmosphere in order to “conquer worlds” FPA can’t, but this helps explain how the FPA can put up a fight with fewer resources. They are fighting with a minimum spec fleet to fight off the empire space only worthy batteships.

    The different between FPA's flagships and Empire's flagships are explained even more in the original novel and I wish the OVA would have explain it :p.
    If I remember correctly, many of the Empire's admirals got their ship custom-made from a special dock, while FPA's ships are so streamlined that most flagships are mass-produced. Yang's Flagship is even worse than any of them. His ship, Hyperion, is an old battleship that was assigned to a border patrol group but was quickly reassigned to 13th fleet and refitted by slapping a command room and some antennas. The FPA has too little time to refit that they didn't even bother to repaint the hull and change the pennant number. That's why the Hyperion has the number of 144M and painted blue instead of green.

    Reuenthal betrays Reinhardt out of a mix of loyalty, ambition, and competitiveness. Reinhardt also baits and pushes him into it.
    Loyalty: he knows Reinhardt wants rivals and is less satisfied with ruling than he was with conquering. The war with the Alliance is over, so Reuenthal gives Reinhardt one last enemy to overcome, if he can. This challenge is a gift.
    Ambition: there is a chance that Reuenthal might actually prove victorious. That would allow Reuenthal not just to grasp power but to wield it in a way that he considered just. These were always the reasons he supported Logengrahm, but only because Reinhardt was the person best positioned to achieve them. At the end if the war, there's a slight chance for Reuenthal tondo so himself. More, this will let him achieve the nobility his father denied him.
    Competition: Reuenthal is just as interested in fighting worthy opponents as Reinhardt is. With Wenli out of the picture, who's left to fight?
    The show spends a long time building this up. But confusion is still a fair reaction. Mittermeyer, Reuenthal's best friend, is also confused by this turn.

    I am really enjoying younger people’s perspective on this show-which is to say, y’all kids whose analogy for understanding war is (arena/moba Gaming). Love that you’re getting stuff out of it.
    The custom ships (almost overwhelmingly empire characters) -that’s a reflection on the nobility and their stuff is all bespoke. It seems like a stretch to you, coming from a Democratic and more egalitarian society, where mass production makes stuff for everyone because nobody is “better” than others. In the Empire, the leaders are literally regarded as better people.
    How does bad maintenance happen? Everything happens for a reason. One character’s anger doesn’t control the scene in the OG. instead they explained both.
    Anyway, the experience of veterans, the actual experience of those who fight at the enlisted level, I agree with you that’s not there in Die Neue These. I think it comes down to broadcasting and ratings. It’s hard to put gore and R ay Pe EE on TV.

Most notably at the first battle of the series, where the armies form a ring. And that is not even getting into the stupid haircuts which a lot of characters have. It doesn't absolve them of sin but shit happens all the time like that in the real military. Especially dealing with 20+ year old equipment. Its easy to say that in the civilian world but those mechanics were probably conscripted in the military, given little mechanical training (probably most of them were learning hands on), and when in the middle of a battle, they are literally worked 24/7. Its easy to get mad at them but at the same time, Soldiers who have been there with the mechanics know that it is not entirely their fault the mission set is almost impossible.

    Since I listened to the end, I will make a follow up comment about Reunter’s betrayal.
    They were both Lions. Reunter is older than Reinhardt, and accepted him as his superior + his loyalty kept him as a loyal subject... but that one personal conversation he had with Reinhardt, after the Lipstat rebellion closure where actually after Kirechies’s death, it was Oberstien/Muller/Reunter’s forward action that conslidated Reinhard’s almost victory over the novels. (They secured the victory that almost unraveled from Reinhardt’s stupor after his lost of Kirchies)
    So he not only saw his boss, as not infallible, Reinhardt even tells him 1:1. Power is taken by those who are capable, if you ever see the opportunity... and bates Reunter.
    I agree it’s a little bit forced, but they planted the seeds. And it made for great drama

    The Republic isn't meant to be seen as "the good guys." The point is that both systems are technically neutral, but must rely upon the individuals who form and run its institutions, and that is what leads to good/bad outcomes. Granted, I'm on Team Yang all the way--autocracy, even a "good autocracy", remains an autocracy, and I'm firmly against that...not to mention Yang is just about the ideal person--but I would say that framing it as "the good guys aren't really that good and the bad guys aren't really bad" kind of misrepresents the intentions of the work. Eh, a bit of a nitpick, sure, but whatever. Great work otherwise.

    • @UToobUsername01
      @UToobUsername01 Před 3 lety +3

      Wars are about power. Whether it's good or bad depends on whether the people being ruled over by the system they are in are happy or sad about it. So a authoritarian who wants to take orders under a benevolent king living under a republic is always going to see the government as bad for being too corrupt. While a libertarian living inside a dictatorship will always see their government bad because it's restrictive and annoying as it makes them feel weak and dependent. But you place those people in the system they want and they won't complain. So 'good' or 'bad' in the anime worlds isn't really representative of universal ideas of good and bad. In the real world people flip their ideals when they get older and more mature. People living in a soviet russian times might see capitalism as evil but then realise that communism is ALSO evil in a different way. So they say they are 'neutral' now. They went from being on a side to being neutral but even the neutral is just moderate levels of the two sides in one person. What is good or bad depends on who the person is. People who have moral code that makes the most number of people happy (because it is productive) are the truly good ones. The bad ones are the ones that have moral code that is destructive. This is why anime that is preachy is not liked much as people assume the anime world's idea of good is not the universal good. Star Wars tackles the problem beautifully: the jedi are imperfect and so evil was able to sneak in due to relaxing of rules. Those rules are what define being a knight. Break the rules and you introduce chaos! Chaos then comes and takes hold to create a strict empire that lets the emperor do a he pleases but the people are held to strict rules that oppresses them. So it's not about good or bad but the loss of freedom. The jedi had their rules and broke them, the sith never had rules but became power crazy which caused the good guys to stop fighting for freedom which in turn meant more efficiency but more suffering. The universal good however is redeeming the bad guy so he can be given a second chance. Without second chance to make things right you can't undo a mistake. That is what the "good" guys were missing. They made a mistake by going soft on rules and thought it was game over. But the universe balances it out by giving the bad guys the belief that they already won but did they really? They can't obtain power if everyone hates their guts and will deliberately pretend to work hard but not like working under abusive conditions. So the bad guys can drop their guard just like the good guys and this allows them both to learn about their own weakness of character. If the emperor was perfect at manipulation, then he should have foreseen being betrayed by his student however he failed due to pride in thinking he can ever be beaten. This pride is the universal sin that causes empires to always collapse. Once you believe you are a god and can do no wrong you will not reflect on your decisions and question whether it was correct because you don't think you can make mistakes. Then you enemies exploit this character flaw and regain freedom from your system. True Good guys that are UNIVERSALLY good are humble and ready to admit the flaws and avoid mistakes while the bad guys assume there is nothing to question. This is why in martial arts the saying goes "it's not the move type that beat you in a fight but the move you didn't expect" - what that move is, is the thing you can't predict. Th emperor couldn't predict something simple like family bond defeating his mind control. Why? Perhaps not being familiar with how strong bonds are between people as that is not the way of the Sith. (which is like a robot: you do things to get the power and the power is what makes you ruler. However if nobody likes the ruler and the people revolt, the government is ruled by the people once the rules become unbearable. The ancient romans knew that to prevent any rebellion you needed to keep the population happy with Bread and Circuses. Feed them and entertain them with distraction and they will be too lazy and de-motivated to care about righteous rule and not think about it. What was the Emperor's weakness? Being focused on power, not looking at how happy people were under his boot. The assumption is if you are stronger and more wiser then you rule. But the missing factor is "Am I popular?" and so he forgot he only got to power through deception not reaching that power due to people loving him and agreeing. That allowed his student to take advantage of the blind spot.

His sentimental approach to a mass of people being able to govern themselves, even into a corrupt bureaucracy as a morally absolute good. Him putting republicanism onto a pedestal as this sacred rite passed on from divinity rivals even the kaisers of old in terms of hypocrisy. Claim of divine sovereignty in one way or the other leads to moral self righteousness, never ends well. He is one of the most bigoted characters in the show. The reason I've always accepted as to why the guy turns on the Kaiser at the end is just that he snaps and goes crazy. He's portrayed as having bad relationships, a bad childhood and family life, abusive parents and generally a shitty life, so when he is doing a good job and was loyal to the kaiser and it keeps getting questioned he essentially snaps and goes crazy and decides to go through with the plan he was forced in to be Terraists anyways. It does seem a little forced, it would have made more sense IMO that he tries to take over after Reinhard dies in an ensuing civil war, but instead they have him fight Reinhard and it doesn't make as much sense.
    It would have been cool to see Reinhard die or be on his deathbed and when the civil war breaks out Ruenthal decides to plea to the alliance to rebuild it and the imperial unity of the galaxy lasts all of like a year before the Alliance is back and fighting the imperials again, with the Gale Wolf and Ruenthal enemies on other side.

    It's not really that complex to understand why the violence is toned down so much in the remake. LOGH was released as a subscription based ova series. Several VHS tapes were shipped to you over several years. The remake is being released on tv. The brutality and violence has to be toned down in such a case.

    The motivation for the betrayal you talk about was given long in advance but maybe so long in advance you didn't get it, that character has lots of scenes about loyalty and ambition and the like that show the kind of person he is, which explains why he did what he did in the scene. But he's an odd guy so it's easy to not empathize.

    Oh the guy that betrayed the Kaiser. I think I know who you are talking about. I'm not gonna mention any names, but it was the guy the Kaiser sent a message to after kircheis's death. The guy betrayed the Kaiser because he believed the Kaiser wanted someone to fight, an opponent who is strong and smart. The Kaiser did say something along the lines (I'm just summarizing it, not accurate or true to the Kaiser's word), "If you got balls in the future, feel free to fight me". He wanted to fulfill his role for the Kaiser, to act as a scapegoat of sorts.

    Good people and remarkable people are killed meaninglessly. That's war, and that's terrorism. The sins of war and terrorism, in the end, comes down to that. - Yang Wen-li
    This is why I love the original! You see this horror and you understand why Yang thinks like that. There is nothing good or heroic in war. Haven't watched the remake yet, might check it out later, but the original is and will always be the best character-driven space opera ever and a timeless classic!
    About Oskar betraying (spoilers I guess):
    He was portrayed as second greatest admiral of their army right after Reinhard, very prideful and very ambitious. And he himself always thought that only thing stopping him from going against Reinhard is the fact that he witnessed the genius strategic mind of Reinhard and knew he couldn't win that fight. But Oberstain still saw him as a potential threat that could appear after everything was finished with FPA. So Oberstain played on his ambitious nature and gave a political opening for Oskar's rebelion. Oskar still knew he will lose, but 1. his nature and pride wouldn't let him back down and 2. in a way he decided to showcase himself for everyone else to see that even if the great Reuenthal couldn't do it, noone should try and go against Reinhard. Even his death he used to serve Reinhard. This is how I understood and how I remember it 2,5 years after watching. And also Oskar killed the worst person of the sroty Trunicht, which makes Oskar von Reuenthal my favorite character of the original series!

    I think the remake definitely does highlight the horrors of war, but not to the extent that the original did. It the original the whole show seemed to highlight this fact and was one of the major flaws of the empire as they were extremely militaristic before and during Reinheart’s dictatorship. In the original with its focus on the battle they glorify it more though Yang has said consistent in being a voice of peace

    I agree about Reunter’s betrayal, it was hard to understand his motivation for betrayal, but then he had a kid.., and then wishing to get the best for your child became a thing... it might be a biological turn due to fathership... regardless, they already cast Wakamoto Norio, and he deserves a dice roll for the top. Coolest voice in the universe empire or FPA

      I am curious as to how did you come to the conclusion that Ruenthal's betrayal was for his son. It was the very argument Lang tried to accuse Ruenthal with and Ruenthal debunked it right on the spot. He literally couldn't care less about his kid since he didn't believe he should/deserve to be a father. Not even once did he ever take the existence of his child into consideration until the very very end when the woman brought the kid to see him. Even then it was more out of pity cause the woman was about to abandon the kid, so Ruenthal sent the kid to Mittermyer who could really use one.

    Maybe I'm in the minority here, but the main thing I disliked about the remake was actually the space battles. The CGI space ships looked too slick and too cluttered at the same time, while in the original both Imperial and Alliance ships looked very utilitarian (yet distinct from one another).
    CGI can bring a lot to the table when it comes to 3d objects maneuvering in 3d spaces, which is very hard to animate with traditional animation, especially on a series budget. But the potential pitfall is the tendency to just over do it by throwing too much stuff at the screen, and I think New Thesis fell into that trap - though not as badly as Yamato 2202.

    @Baamthe25th Před 2 lety +1

    I'm with you.
    I think that Reuenthal rebelion didn't end up making so much sense. There was build up, right when Reinhardt taunts Reuenthal into rebellion after they defeated the High Nobles, but I dunno, he ended getting trapped/framed and just accepted it. It would have been fine if he fully did so for his own ambition, but no. He got manipulated, and he stays quite ambivalent about it
    Honestly, I always really disliked the Terraist plotline as a whole, and their big impact on the story, in getting Yang. So that was annoying when they managed to get him too, and went on to cause even more trouble at the end of the series. It's like B-movies villainsjust decided to keep stepping in and interrupting the masterpiece.
    Also, he ended up losing due to 1/Julian helping the Kaiser, which isn't even good. That's just negotiating/deference. They are just not a player at this point, but the story insists that they are, and it didn't work for me and 2/to the betrayal of his own men.
    If he had lost to another character of his level/imortance in the story, it would be much better. Losing to Mittermeyer or better, Reinhardt, that would have been good. But it just ended up being dissapointing

    It's interesting that this series blurs the lines between "good guys" and "bad guys". A major theme of the books is whether it's better to have a corrupt democracy or a benevolent dictatorship. However, there is a clear distinction between competent and incompetent people. My only real complaint about the series is that almost everyone is either a genius or a complete moron. There's very little in between.

    I like both old and new equally, but new definitely have too much "ugly bastards" as bad characters.
    Actually, each season as far as i know adapts 1 volume per season, so new adaptation will probably be 120 episodes long. + another 48 or so if they will adapt Gaiden.
    You are talking about Reuenthal? I think he was just disappointed that Reinhard didn't believe in him after all they were been through and didn't wanted to be treated as a criminal/traitor. He was too prideful to ask for forgiveness or explain himself when he personally did nothing wrong and Reinhard should have known that.

    • @iwatchDVDsonXbox360
      @iwatchDVDsonXbox360 Před rokem +1

      I think what happened to Reuenthal happened a lot throughout of history. Between Aurangzeb and his brother when his father got sick or between Aurangzeb and his son Akbar. Akbar was such a nice guy, honest and faithful ally, i do not understand why Aurangzeb didn't believe in him. Probably cared too much about his power or life.
